Greetings from the Clore Management Centre, the Bloomsbury abode of Management@Birkbeck. As can be seen from this latest Newsletter, the Department is continuing to thrive and prosper, buoyed by the talent, commitment and industry of staff, academic and administrative. Summer Writing Retreat in Norfolk

Eight academics and PhD students from the Department of Management and Organisational Psychology participated in a residential writing retreat this summer, 26-28 July, 2016. This small group of researchers travelled together to a remote setting in Norfolk to engage in intensive writing on various individual and joint projects, and enjoyed the shared experience of scheduled writing sessions, over two days, within a group. The Department of Management successfully runs weekly writing retreats during term time (co-ordinated by Dr. Federica Rossi and Dr. Wendy Hein) and plans to repeat the success of these residential retreats in the 2016/2017 academic year. INTERNATIONAL ACTIVITIES

Dr Luca Andriani recently undertook an international research visit at the Athens University of Economics and Business, Athens, Greece. This latest visit, from 27-29 April, 2016, was arranged through the Erasmus Fellowship scheme, which had facilitated Dr Andriani’s previous international academic trips.

RESEARCH GRANTS, AWARDS AND CONSULTING

Dr Luca Andriani and Prof. Andrea Filippetti (CNR, Italy) have been awarded a Small Research Grant (£2,000) by the School of Business, Economics and Informatics (BEI) at Birkbeck to support a research project entitled “Space and Civic Engagement: A Spatial Analysis on Individual Level Data”.

Prof. Kevin Ibeh was recently appointed Consultant by the OECD to develop a policy paper on Digitalisation and SME Internationalisation to underpin a focused Policy Conference on the theme in Venice, Italy (with Professor Lester Lloyd-Reason, Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge, UK).

MEDIA COVERAGE

Prof. Klaus Nielsen, earlier in the year, wrote an obituary to mark the passing of the Nobel Prize Winning Economist, Douglas North, who died in November 2015. The well-received article, published in The Guardian, can be found here: https://www.theguardian.com/education/2016/jan/27/douglass-north

NEW APPOINTMENTS

The Department of Management welcomes Dr Pamela Yeow who has been jointly appointed by Birkbeck and Central St. Martins, University of the Arts, London as Director of the CSM-Birkbeck new MBA and innovative programme, which is currently recruiting students for a 2017/18 start. Pamela joined us from Kent Business School, where she was, until her new appointment, Senior Lecturer in Management and MBA programme Director.

The Athens Institute for Education and Research, Athens, Greece, has appointed Dr Luca Andriani as Academic Member of the Sociology Research Unit and the Political Science and International Affairs Research Unit.

Dr Anita Walsh has been appointed as External Examiner for a Professional Doctorate (DProf) by Public Work programme at the University of Middlesex, UK. She was also recently appointed External Examiner for a Doctorate in Education (EdD) programme at the Nottingham Trent University, UK.

Prof. Kevin Ibeh, in October 2016, received a new appointment as Visiting Professorial Fellow at the Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna, Nigeria’s only military University. Prof. Ibeh was also appointed External Examiner for PhD viva at the University of Bradford, and External Assessor for Senior Academic promotion at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, during October 2016.

International Symposium on Entrepreneurship and Innovation:

Birkbeck’s Centre for Innovation and Management Research (CIMR) hosted the 19th Uddevalla Symposium on ‘Geography, Open Innovation, Diversity and Entrepreneurship’ from June 30th to July 2nd. Many CIMR academics, PhD students and Fellows participated as speakers, chairs and discussants.

Two members of CIMR Birkbeck, Dr Federica Rossi and Dr Fred Guy, organised a regional policy panel entitled ‘The Knowledge Economy and the Dynamics of City Growth’, where CIMR alumni, Councillor Ali Hashem (Labour Party, UK) participated amongst other distinguished speakers.

Other panel members include: Prof. Jennifer Clark (Georgia Tech), Prof. Ian Gordon (LSE), Prof. Tom Kemeny (University of Southampton) and Prof. Henry Etzkowitz(Stanford University).

The panel chaired by Dr Federica Rossi featured Dr Jonathan Potter of the OECD as the discussant.

1. Female leaders speak on their career progression

The TRIGGER team recently invited different Birkbeck female role models, including professional service staff and academics, from the School of Sciences and the School of Business Economics and Informatics, to speak on their career progression and aspirations. Networking and Panel event

On 28 June, 2016, Birkbeck took further strides toward gender equality and equity, as the TRIGGER team invited an audience of professionals, academics and students to consider how best to inspire aspiring female professors and managers. The event ‘Aspiring female Professors/Managers – What can aspiring female professors/managers learn from those already in these positions?’ looked to develop dialogue, networking and solidarity to consider how such barriers can be overcome.
