Applied Radiation and Isotopes 63 (2005) 527 Foreword This is the eighth conference of the series on Applications of Nuclear Techniques organized bien- nially on the island of Crete, Greece, and emphasizing selected areas of nuclear applications. Each time, the topics to be discussed at the conference are decided after consultation with a number of colleagues throughout the world nuclear community. This year as in the previous conference, because of the terrorist acts against civilians, more emphasis was placed in presentations on developing or refining nuclear techniques for non- intrusive inspection of packages, containers, buildings, etc. Along with the development of methodology in this direction, further development of detectors, neutron generators, X-ray and g-ray dosimeters, and fast nuclear electronics have been given a new impetus. Several of these topics were covered at the conference, as well as developments in other areas of X-ray and nuclear applications. The papers in this volume reflect the topics discussed at the conference, which were: Detection of landmines and weapons of mass destruction. Nuclear gauges. Dosimetry/Detectors. Neutron production. X-ray/Nuclear applications. Nuclear non-proliferation. Radioactive beams/Isotopes. Nuclear waste assay. The papers are arranged in this volume according to the order of the above topics. All manuscripts were peer reviewed prior to publication. We wish to extend our appreciation to all the conference participants that acted as reviewers for their careful and timely effort. In closing, we wish to express our appreciation to the distinguished colleagues worldwide for their advice and guidance in choosing topics and speakers. Forewordwww.elsevier.com/locate/apradiso

This is the eighth conference of the series on

Applications of Nuclear Techniques organized bien-

nially on the island of Crete, Greece, and emphasizing

selected areas of nuclear applications. Each time, the

topics to be discussed at the conference are decided after

consultation with a number of colleagues throughout

the world nuclear community. This year as in the

previous conference, because of the terrorist acts against

civilians, more emphasis was placed in presentations on

developing or refining nuclear techniques for non-

intrusive inspection of packages, containers, buildings,

etc. Along with the development of methodology in this

direction, further development of detectors, neutron

generators, X-ray and g-ray dosimeters, and fast nuclearelectronics have been given a new impetus. Several of

these topics were covered at the conference, as well as

developments in other areas of X-ray and nuclear

applications.

The papers in this volume reflect the topics discussed

at the conference, which were:

Detection of landmines and weapons of mass

destruction.

Nuclear gauges.

Dosimetry/Detectors.

Neutron production.

The papers are arranged in this volume according to

the order of the above topics. All manuscripts were peer

reviewed prior to publication. We wish to extend our

appreciation to all the conference participants that acted

as reviewers for their careful and timely effort.
