TRANSCRIPT
“Goonhilly Earth Station is one of the most recognised names in the Space Industry. It is famous throughout the world for being one of three earth stations involved in the first trans-Atlantic TV transmission (via Telstar) in 1962. It was present at the birth of Intelsat, Eutelsat and Inmarsat, as well as the birth of the Internet, as networks on the East and West coasts of the USA were linked to Europe.
Goonhilly Earth Station beamed the Moon landings to millions of viewers in 1969, and Live-Aid in 1985. It took part in almost every major satellite communication development, becoming the UK’s main route for international telephone calls via satellite, and it was the largest ground station for the INMARSAT network. As well as these astonishing firsts, Goonhilly Earth Station was one of the main drivers of the new commercial economy of space communications, opening up a gateway between the new satellite operators and the international telephone, TV and data networks.
Now, under the private ownership of Goonhilly Earth Station Ltd (GES), it continues to expand its commercial satellite communication service portfolio, and is leading the way in private sector deep space communications. Goonhilly is synonymous with innovative British engineering and technological skills, and for being at the heart of the satellite communications industry.
Through Goonhilly Earth Station Ltd, the site has received a major private capital investment programme, and this has recently been backed by UK Government support: Goonhilly has been given ‘Enterprise Zone’ status – the government’s flagship programme for technology parks, which will bring significant additional capital investment and offer benefits to incoming customers.
Goonhilly is winning new commercial business and providing services to all of the major satellite operators, as well as providing a diverse portfolio of space communication and data related services to a broader customer base.
At Goonhilly, we welcome partnerships and collaborations, and we are motivated to find the best solutions for all of our customers.”
Ian Jones, CEO

This collaboration includes our partners at University of Oxford, University of Manchester, University of Leeds, and University of Hertfordshire.
The mathematics of digital signal processing, radio astronomy, artificial intelligence and machine learning are closely connected, and we are using our cross-sectoral skills to apply algorithms developed in one field to solve problems in another.
We have invested in a number of GPU and FPGA based supercomputers which provide massive parallel processing.
This, together with our LEO tracking capability dedicated to downlinking EO data directly into our data centre, provides us with the capability to derive new high-value data sets for various markets including agri-tech, coastal monitoring, traffic monitoring, and flood warning, to name but a few.
The “Institute” will contain incubation space for companies to come and use the facilities at Goonhilly and work with us and our partners.
Goonhilly is building an “Institute for Space Artificial Intelligence and
Machine Learning” together with an expanding group of UK Universities.
13
At Goonhilly, we combine our knowledge of space communications, antenna design, phased arrays, signal processing, electronics, software and mechanical engineering, to develop advanced products for space communication and related markets.
RECEIVER FACTORY
We are an exemplar for knowledge exchange between Universities and industry and work closely with the physics department at Oxford University to transfer specialist designs into operation.
This includes the advancing of cryostatic receivers, ultra-scale FPGAs and high-performance RF engineering through testing and into production.
Our “Receiver Factory” is an advanced manufacturing facility which can be used both for our own equipment development to keep our services at the leading edge of technology, and also to build products to print for third parties.
14
MISSION OPS
At Goonhilly we excel in providing ultra-reliable communication links for operators to control and monitor their spacecraft. As we expand our global Deep Space Network, we are installing communication equipment which is fully compatible with ESA and NASA deep space standards.
We have created both Network Operation Centre (NOC) and Mission Operation Centre (MOC) facilities at Goonhilly and will replicate these at specific locations around the world in collaboration with key partners – providing the capability of controlling our deep space antennas from any location, and to enable granting secure control of our network to key partners.
We have in-house skills and experience in mission operations for small satellites in low earth orbit as well as large-scale ESA deep space spacecraft.

Goonhilly is an ideal site to host LEO/MEO (Low/Medium Earth Orbit) constellation tracking antennas. We have the space available on a secure, well-connected site to provide horizon-to-horizon views with almost no blocking. In addition, we have dual and diverse fibre connectivity, 24/7 engineering cover and resilient power to provide the highest levels of support.
Due to its geographical position, Goonhilly is particularly well suited to support ISS based missions, and one antenna is equipped to provide video downlink feeds from the International Space Station using the ARISS DVB system.
We can provide a range of services, from antenna build and hosting, to the provision of engineering support, connectivity and power, through to rental of facilities for individual orbits or any combination of satellite pass schedules.
SaaS / IOT Exchange
Goonhilly is a leader in the deep space and satellite markets, with connections to thousands of satellites tracking millions of devices and events globally.
From tracking planes, to predicting tsunamis, understanding data and the opportunities it brings are fundamental to corporate and government organisations.
As part of our expansion, we are building an intelligent hub, where providers and end users come together to share and analyse data, driving new insights and delivering competitive advantage to their users.
DEEP SPACE NETWORK
Modifying our 30m and 32m antennas to be compatible with NASA & ESA’s Deep Space Networks allows cost-effective access to communications and ranging services to spacecraft at GEO (geostationary orbit), and beyond. The flexible design of these large antennas allows our customers’ proprietary systems to also be supported.
Goonhilly will be leading the world’s first commercial deep space network service to provide additional capacity that will extend existing NASA and ESA deep space networks. In addition, we are launching our own commercial mission to the Moon with partners SSTL (Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd) and ESA.
In 2022/23 we plan to launch Lunar Pathfinder 1 (top right) to support NASA Lunar Missions. Goonhilly will provide the communications link and mission operations facility.
Goonhilly is developing the capability to support Lunar and Deep Space mission operations for institutions and private enterprise
17
Goonhilly has been commissioned to deliver a number of bespoke communications based projects. By way of example, we have worked with a major client on the design of a containerised, highly calibrated reference station that may be shipped to any location around the world, for testing satellites and earth stations. Tasks included major modifications to an existing 3.7m trailer-mounted antenna so that it could fit into half the space of a standard high cube 40ft shipping container. The other half of the container accommodates a test area including high power amplifiers, RF switching, earth station control, test equipment and computers, allowing the facility to be remotely viewed, controlled and operated over the internet.
Goonhilly also adapts and modifies antenna systems to develop and support a range of services from TV to TT&C, and we are currently undertaking major refits on three of the largest antennas at Goonhilly (from 26m to 32m diameter) to repurpose them for radio astronomy and deep space communications.
