Junior District Program

Introduction

The Forestville junior district program aims to create an environment in which players of all ages and divisions can reach their potential. Key aspects of the program include: • constant skill development, • fostering a desire and effort to improve, • instilling a commitment to the club, the team and the individual, • recognising and acknowledging different rates of development, • developing a positive attitude towards team mates, umpires, coaches, and the

opposition, • enjoying the game of basketball. At Under 10 and Under 12 level, players are taught the basic skills of the game and learn to apply them in a competitive environment. The emphasis is on skill development, participation, confidence building and enjoyment. From Under 14s to Under 18s, players are expected to accept and respond to the demands of greater competition. While retaining the constant focus on skill development, there is a need for higher levels of work rate and intensity. On a technical level, we focus on developing a wide knowledge of the game and emphasise aspects of the game which give our players the greatest chance of success at the highest possible level. This includes: • the fundamentals of shooting, passing and dribbling, • motion offence, • man-to-man defence. We believe that players who learn these aspects at a young age find it easier to adapt to more tactical aspects at an older age. Do all players play equally? An important aspect of a young player’s development is to be given an equal opportunity to participate in games. Forestville Eagles Basketball Club has implemented a Participation Rule to ensure every player gets the chance to participate in the game and succeed with their skills development. Parents should speak to their child’s coach about the playing philosophy they will use for their team. If there are any questions or concerns they should be discussed first with the coach and, if necessary with the key Club contact eg: The Basketball Manager. For more information on the Forestville Junior District Program, email [email protected].

Forestville Information Booklet Page 8

Uniforms All players must wear the correct Forestville uniform when: • training • playing • arriving at or departing from a stadium for a game The game uniform consists of: • game shorts • blue game singlet • warm up top (optional) • tracksuit or hooded top (optional) Although the warm up top, tracksuit and hooded top are optional, these are the only items to be worn over the top of the game uniform on game day. Teams participating in carnivals must also have a yellow game singlet, as an alternate strip. At trainings, all players in Under 12s to Under 18s must wear the club reversible singlet. Under 10s may wear either the reversible singlet or the game singlet. Uniforms can be purchased from Forestville’s Uniform Shop as detailed below.

The Uniform Shop New players should contact the club office to obtain a playing number prior to the purchase of a uniform. These numbers will be placed on the uniform in our uniform shop. Players should not purchase playing tops from retiring players without checking first that the number is available for use. The club office can be contacted on 8231-7908. All Club uniforms and merchandise are available for sale from our Uniform Shop at Wayville on Friday nights and Saturday mornings when games are scheduled. Order forms can be downloaded from the web site and emailed to Marjo Winskog at [email protected]

Training Policy All players are required to attend every programmed training session and to arrive at least 15 minutes early to warm up and stretch. If there is a valid reason for missing a training session, the player must contact the coach personally in advance. If a player misses a training session and does not give a valid reason, court time in the next game may be limited. If this happens regularly, then further action may be taken, possibly involving the player being dropped to a lower division. The purpose of this policy is to reward players who are committed and willing to work ahead of those who are not.

Fees

Membership Fees

The membership fees for district players are recommended by the Executive Committee to the Board each year, as part of the overall budget process. The fees cover the levy by Basketball SA of team nomination in the district competition, payment of court hire for training sessions and club operational/support costs. For information regarding fees for each age group, please contact the Club. A component of the membership fee covers the cost of court hire for two training sessions a week. The second training fee is waived for teams that only train once a week. Players who do not meet payment deadlines as outlined in the Schedule of Fees, or who have not made alternative payment arrangements with the Club, are likely to become ineligible for selection beyond the due date. Furthermore, players who have outstanding membership fees will not be granted a clearance, or be able to register with another club until all financial obligations to the Club are met. Coaches and managers will be informed of this policy to assist with its enforcement. To be successful in any sport everyone needs to buy in and be part of the team or organisation - being a paid up member makes you part of that team

Volunteer Levy

Forestville operates the Canteen/coffee shop at Wayville as a service to the basketball community and to raise funds for running the club, in order to keep membership fees as low as possible. Parents are rostered throughout the year to work in the Canteen. All parents are required to take their turn, or alternatively may choose to pay an additional levy if they do not wish to have their name added to the roster. Everyone should expect to work in the Canteen once a season per player.

Payment

An invoice for membership fees is provided to players at the start of each season noting a due date for payment, generally within one month of the start of the season. In exceptional circumstances, should you not be in a position to pay the full amount of the fees by the due date, please contact the club office to discuss options for alternative payment arrangements. Players joining the club part way through the season pay a pro-rata fee. Fees are non-refundable, except in exceptional circumstances totally at the discretion of the club.

Basketball SA - Game Fees

Each game, players must pay an entrance fee at the door. This fee goes directly to BASKETBALL SA, and covers the cost of umpiring and court hire.

Tournaments

Introduction

The club supports and encourages participation in tournaments. Playing tournament basketball is a highlight of the year for players and parents alike. And is very important in terms of player development. In some cases, participation in particular tournaments is compulsory. In other cases, the decision to enter a tournament is made by the coach, in consultation with the Basketball Manager. To nominate for a tournament, teams must submit a tournament nomination form to the club office for processing. Information about upcoming tournaments is forwarded to team coaches when it is received by the club. For tournaments away from Adelaide, the decision to nominate must be made early in the Summer Season, to allow time for booking accommodation and fundraising. Travelling teams must have a minimum of eight players and must be accompanied by a club-appointed coach, a team manager and at least two other parents. Players must be in full club uniform, including playing uniform with an alternative top, a warm-up top and a tracksuit or hooded top.

Tournament Fees

The club pays half the nomination costs for the State Championships and half the nomination costs of one other tournament per team per year. If this tournament attracts both a nomination fee and a team fee to cover stadium entrance, the club covers half the total cost of the nomination and team fee. The club office will handle all tournament registration paperwork and forward all monies to relevant tournament organisers. It is the responsibility of team managers to collect costs from parents and reimburse the club. Links to tournaments can be accessed from our club webpage. Eltham Tournament This tournament is held at the end of January in Melbourne and is suitable for any division 1 and 2 teams. Venues used are around both Eltham and Dandenong areas.

Norwood Easter Classic

This tournament runs over all four days of the Easter long weekend in Adelaide. It is recommended for Division 1 and 2 teams.

State Championships

This tournament is held in Adelaide in May. It is compulsory for all Division 1 and 2 teams in Under 12s to Under 18s.

June Long Weekend

All teams are encouraged to enter a tournament in the June Long Weekend. If invited, Forestville will compete at the Melbourne Classic. Nunawading (Melbourne) and Ballarat tournaments are appropriate for Division 2 and 3 teams. Mildura is appropriate for division 3 and 4 teams.

Forestville Information Booklet Page 11

Melbourne Classic

The Melbourne Classic is held in Melbourne (Albert Park for Under 12s and Under 14s, Dandenong for Under 16s and Under 18s) and is one of the most prestigious club-based tournaments in Australia each year. Invitations are granted to SA Division 1 teams based on their performance in the State Championships. Generally, the top four SA teams are invited to the Classic. Teams that do not qualify for the Classic are granted automatic entry to the Nunawading tournament, also on the June long weekend. It is compulsory for all Division 1 players in Under 12s to Under 18s to make themselves available for these tournaments.

Under 14 National Club Championships

The Under 14 National Club Championships is the only truly national club tournament in Australia. Invitations are granted to Division 1 SA teams based on their performance in the State Championships. Generally, the top two SA teams are invited to the National Club Championships. It is compulsory for all Under 14 Division 1 players to make themselves available for this tournament.

Local Tournaments

There are a number of local tournaments throughout the year. Teams which do not participate in the State Championships or interstate tournaments are encouraged to participate in these tournaments.

Forestville Information Booklet Page 12

Coaches Division 1 coaches will be appointed on an annual basis; prospective coaches have an opportunity to apply for positions – nominations are usually sought in June-August for the following season. Division 1 coaches are responsible for overseeing ALL teams within ALL Divisions of their age grouping. The appointment process for Division 1 coaches is managed by the Basketball Manager and appointments ratified by the Board. Other Divisions coach appointments follow those of the Division 1 positions. Coaches are volunteers. Their positions are the most important jobs within the club. Forestville seeks its coaches to be positive role models for their players – as players’ actions will generally mirror the leadership provided. The expectations for players are also the expectations for coaches (and more). Forestville expects coaches to be firm but fair when dealing with players. Player actions which are contrary to the interests of the team or the club will not be tolerated. Coaches are supported to use a variety of approaches in communicating with and managing their players/team. They should balance criticism with praise, where appropriate. Players must learn to deal with constructive criticism and also learn to not get carried away with success. Constructive criticism means dealing with criticising player behaviour, not criticising the individual. Forestville strives for coaches to enjoy the experience. It is most rewarding to be able to work closely with a committed group or player, parents and supporters. The club thanks all coaches for giving up their valuable time and for the personal sacrifices they make to help Forestville in the development of its players.

Coach behaviour

Always model mature behaviour consistent with that of Forestville Eagles Basketball Club’s expectations. Guidelines for behaviour: • Be a Leader, a positive influence and role model.

• Reward effort, fair play and commitment.

• Recognise and respect the differences in your athletes.

• Demonstrate respect for all individuals involved in the game.

• Always consider the physical and emotional well-being of the athletes.

• Communicate in a positive and rational manner.

• Respect and coach within the spirit of the game.

• Always attempt to contribute to the betterment of the game.

Junior Player Selections Statement of Purpose The Board of the Forestville Eagles Basketball Club is committed to ensuring maximum opportunity for its junior players to play at the highest level to which they aspire and that team selection is governed in a consistent, fair and equitable manner. Trials Trials for new and existing players are held in August each year. Information about trial dates and times will be distributed to local schools and advertised in the local press. Division 1 coaches in each age group are responsible for coordinating the trials and selecting the teams, in conjunction with the Basketball Manager and other coaches in the age group. For existing players, selection will be based upon performance during the previous season, as well as performance at trials. New Players may join a team part way through the season. In these cases, the Division 1 coach, in conjunction with the Basketball Manager, determines in which team the player will be placed. Coaches must ensure that new players have attended training sessions prior to playing in any competition. Coaches and the Basketball Manager must ensure that they have selected the player (if selected in either Div 1 or 2) under the club’s philosophy of rewarding existing commitments to the club, and that all reasonable consideration is given to ensure that existing club players are not disadvantaged.

Players who do not meet payment deadlines as outlined in the Schedule of Fees, or who have not made alternative payment arrangements with the Club, are likely to be ineligible for trials.

Selection Criteria The following criteria are to be used when selecting players in teams:

• skill level,

• commitment, including work rate and attendance at training

• willingness to listen to and act upon feedback from coaches,

• ability to work well in a team environment,

• physical attributes to fill particular positions in a team (eg size, athleticism, fitness, etc.),

• the need for a mixture of first year and second year players within a team and squad.

When comparing an existing player to a new player, with all other things being equal, coaches are required to place the existing player in a higher division to reward commitment to the club.

Forestville Information Booklet Page 14

Movement between teams It is important that players are allocated to the division that best suits their ability, development and therefore enjoyment. When a player is to be moved between divisions, it is important that this is handled consistently across the club. The following procedure must be followed when a change is proposed:

1. The coaches of the two teams involved and the Division 1 coach discuss the proposed change.

2. The Division 1 coach discusses the proposed change with the Basketball Manager.

3. The player’s current coach informs the player (which may include a parent depending on the age group and sensitivity) of the decision, and the reason it was made.

4. The player’s new coach informs the player of when the next training/game is for the new team.

This procedure is not meant to stifle or prevent changes from happening. Changes can, will and should occur at any stage throughout the year. The procedure is to ensure that these decisions are considered carefully and are made in a manner that is consistent with the club’s philosophy.

Forestville Information Booklet Page 15

Pathways to senior selection for juniors Statement of Purpose The Board of the Forestville Eagles Basketball Club is committed to ensuring maximum opportunity is provided to its junior players to graduate to play at the highest level to which they aspire. Trials Senior trials for Forestville junior players are held in October each year. Information about trial dates and times is to be distributed via the Basketball Manager and Club Notice Board. ABA coaches will coordinate the trials and are responsible for selecting their squad and teams; this may include seeking input from the Basketball Manager and junior coaches. Selection will be based on available places, team balance/needs, performance during the previous season, as well as performance at trials. Junior players may be selected during the season to be part of the Senior Squad based on the selection criteria. This will be done in consultation with the Basketball Manager and relevant junior coach in order to meet the best interests of the player.

Selection Criteria The following criteria are used when selecting players in teams and squads:

• Skill level

• Work rate

• Willingness to listen to, and act upon, feedback from coaches

• Ability to work well in a team environment

• Physical attributes to fill particular positions in a team (eg size, athleticism, fitness, etc)

• The need for a mixture of players within a team and squad. When comparing a Forestville player to a new player, with all other things being equal, coaches are obliged to place the existing player in the team or squad. It is the expectation of the club that clear and regular communication exists between the Basketball Manager, and Junior and Senior level coaches, to ensure a pathway for players of all ages and abilities to aspire to play at the highest possible level, and that our programs revolve around equipping our players with these opportunities.

Forestville Information Booklet Page 16

Basketball Pathways The South Australian National Intensive Training Program (formerly SASI) runs a program in which elite basketball players in Under 16s and 18s participate in weekly trainings sessions throughout the year. In this program, players receive detailed individual feedback on fundamentals and are provided with the opportunity to train with some of the best players their age in the state. The South Australian basketball program is one of many Basketball Australia Intensive Training Centres (ITC) around Australia. The main purpose of the ITC program is to develop players who are capable of competing at a state or national level. The NITP program is very intense, but has many rewards, including the possibility of competing in the East Coast Challenge in Sydney for Under 15s/17s, and a tour to USA and Europe after Under 18s. Players are selected in NITP squads based on their performance at Under 12, 14 and 16 BASKETBALL SA Talent Identification camps. These camps are run in the April (Under 14/16) and September (Under 12) school holidays, and are open to all players in division 1 and 2 teams. There are two camps for each age group – a “Talent ID” camp, and a “Development” camp. Clubs are allocated a certain number of invitations to the “Talent ID” camp based on the performance of their division 1 team in the previous season and these are distributed to the best players in the division 1 team. The remainder of the division 1 players and all division 2 players are invited to the “Development” camp. These camps are a great opportunity for players to receive coaching from some of the best coaches in the state. Forestville strongly encourages all invited players to attend. If a player is unable to attend, they should return their application form to their coach as soon as possible, so it can be given to another player. At Under 16 level and Under 18 level, teams are selected to represent SA Metro and SA Country at National Championships. Trials for these teams may vary from year to year, and are advertised on the club notice board. At Under 20 level SA is represented by a single men’s and women’s team at the National Championships. Trials for these teams are generally held in December. Primary school players are eligible to try out for the SAPSASA state team. Trials for this team vary from year to year, and information is distributed via schools. Forestville encourages players of all ages and abilities to aspire to play at the highest possible level, and our program revolves around equipping players with the fundamentals to do so. Only financial players will be awarded $100.00 for their selection into State and/or National squads.

Forestville Information Booklet Page 17

Team Managers Each Team is required to appoint a Team Manager, approved by the Executive Committee. This role is naturally a very important position for the team and the club. It is important that the Team Manager has a close liaison with the coach and all parents are expected to support and assist the Team Manager. The Role of the Team Manager includes: • Complete a Team Sheet. Provide a copy to the club office, the coach and all

players. Any changes to the team list should be notified to the club office. This is important should the club Basketball Manager need to contact any players for any reason at all.

• Distribute and then retain completed Medical Sheets for all players in your team. In case of emergency, this sheet is to be referred to.

• Distribute a game roster and training roster to all players. Ensure that all players are aware of the location and time of any second training sessions. The second training is the financial responsibility of the team and payment of this is to be made direct to the club office.

• Prepare and distribute a scoring roster. It is a responsibility that each player can provide a person who can take their turn in scoring at matches. Ensure that you advise the parents/helpers who are unable to score on their rostered day, arranges a swap with another parent/helper. It is generally not the role of the Team Manager to score.

• Ensure that any new players to the club have been issued and completed a Club Registration form.

• Ensure that any new players from other clubs have obtained a clearance before they can play. Check with the club office if in doubt.

• Ensure that all players are in correct playing uniform. Junior grades are required to wear the Blue playing top. Only Club warm up tops are allowed on the court during warm up. No foreign tops or tracksuits are permitted on the court.

• Players are responsible for their own drink bottles. Team Managers will generally look after the drink bottles during the game.

• Prior to matches, obtain the score sheet at the Stadium entrance for completion. • The Team Manager will collect the tickets for each player and place them in the

plastic bags provided for you when you obtain the score sheet at the Stadium entrance.

• Parents are to be made aware of Transfer tickets that are available for purchase at the club office if they have more than one child playing. This way, parents only pay once each round.

• Team Managers' meetings are held approximately quarterly, generally on a Sunday morning. The Team Manager or that teams' representative should attend each meeting. This is a forum to pass on any issues that you may have and one to gather information to be distributed to the team.

Forestville Information Booklet Page 18

• The Club provides a First Aid kit for each team. Ensure that the First Aid kit is at all training sessions and matches. Please contact the club office if you need to top up the First Aid kit. At the end of the season, this kit is to be returned to the club office for redistribution the following season.

• Ensure that all players are advised that they must advise the Coach of any instances when they will not be able to attend training sessions or matches.

• Distribute all club circulars and any other news items to all players. In most instances you will obtain this information from the pigeon holes that are at the entrance to Wayville.

• Work closely with the Coach to bring about a high level of team spirit and camaraderie within the team and with all other members of the club.

Aussie Hoops

Introduction

Aussie Hoops is a Basketball Australia initiative for kids aged 4 to 12. Its focus is on participation and enjoyment, but also provides a logical pathway into more serious competition. Aussie Hoops has four components: Fun Time, Play Time, Game Time, and Big Time. Each is described below. For more information on the Forestville Aussie Hoops program, email [email protected].

Fun Time

BASKETBALL SA Junior Development Officers run free basketball clinics at primary schools during school time. These clinics are a fun introduction to basketball and are suitable for kids who have never played before.

Play Time

Forestville runs a 6 week block of 1 hour weekly clinics at primary schools or at Wayville. The clinics involve a series of fun games aimed at developing players’ interest in the sport. The Play Time clinics cost $30 and participants receive: • a basketball • a T-shirt • a certificate • a show bag containing other goodies such as a poster, stickers or a drink bottle

Game Time

Game Time is an introduction to competitive basketball. Participants are divided into teams and play short matches, in which they are taught the rules of the game.

Big Time/Miniball

Basketball SA run a formal interschool competition on Monday-Thursday afternoons at Wayville. Forestville can provide coaches for new and existing teams, and can help set up combined teams for schools that don't have enough players to field a team.

Fundraising and Social Events Forestville’s main sources of income are the canteen, the tavern, barbeques, special events and membership fees. The club also receives the door takings from the ABL home matches but must pay the umpires, bench personnel, door person and other costs associated with hosting these matches. Forestville does not receive the door takings for junior district games – these entrance fees are set and collected by BASKETBALL SA. Fundraising is important to keep membership fees as low as possible. The club hosts a number of fundraising and social events throughout the year, including: • ABL Home Games • Junior and Senior Country Carnivals • Quiz Night • Senior Presentation Night • Junior Presentation Day Forestville has a history of running high quality national basketball tournaments, including: • The 2000 National Under 14 Girls Club Championships for Girls • The 2001 Australian Masters Games • The 2002 National Under 16 Men’s and Women’s Championships All these events rely on a large number of volunteers from the Forestville community. If you would like to offer your support, please contact the Club Administration Office.

Sponsorship Forestville Eagles Basketball Club recognizes the importance of and necessity for strong partnerships with sponsors and other basketball delivery agencies for the continuation, enhancement and future development of the sport of basketball. The Club is always looking for organisations to assist the club financially with sponsorship. Various forms of sponsorship are available, and we can tailor a package to suit. All enquiries should be directed through the club office or approach a member of the Executive Committee to discuss further. Registration When a player first joins Forestville, they must complete an “Application for Membership” form. This form is available from the Club Manager. A copy of a Birth Certificate, Baptismal Certificate, or Passport must be attached to the application. If the player is a member of another club, a clearance will need to be sought from that club. Please speak to the Club Administration Officer about this, particularly if the player is on that club’s Required Players List.

Medical Forms Once selected in a team, each player must complete a medical form which will be distributed by the Team Manager. Once completed, the form is returned to the Team Manager who retains it for the duration of the season. The information will be treated in a confidential manner but the knowledge may be essential in the case an emergency. Please make the Team Manager aware of any medication that the player is taking (eg asthmatics). Basketball SA not longer provides insurance, this is now the responsibility of individual players.

Clearances If a Forestville player wishes to transfer to another club, they must first be granted a clearance. A player wishing to apply for a clearance must do so in writing to the Club Administration Officer. An administration fee of $10 will be charged for processing all clearance applications. A clearance will only be granted provided all financial commitments are cleared including payment of second training fees, together with return of any equipment or uniform that may be on loan. Once a season has commenced, a player who wishes to be cleared to another club, will be required to pay that season's subscriptions, as well as the administration fee. This is regardless of whether the player has played that season or not, as the team nomination was based on the understanding that the player would form part of that team.

Code of Conduct

Players

• Play by the rules. • Never argue with an official. If you disagree, have your coach or manager

approach the official during a break or after the match. • Control your temper. Verbal abuse of official or other players, deliberately

distracting or provoking an opponent is not acceptable or permitted in any sport. • Work equally hard for yourself and/or for the team. Your team's performance will

benefit, so will you. • Be a good sport. applaud all good plays whether they are by your team, opponent

or the other team. • Treat all players as you would like to be treated. Do not interfere with, bully or

take unfair advantage of another player. • Cooperate with your coach team-mates and opponents. Without them there would

be no competition. • Play for the "fun of it" and not just to please parents and coaches. • Avoid use of derogatory language based on gender. Please remember that undue and/or unnecessary recklessness on the court may result in a technical foul against a player or alternatively may result in a report on a player. In the event of a technical foul, naturally the team is disadvantaged by giving away foul shots to an opposition team. The coach will naturally not be at all impressed with this, and behaviour of this nature may result in reduction of court time. Continual technical fouls by a player may not only jeopardise the court time, but may result in the player being dropped to a lower division for discipline reasons. In the event of a player being reported for an incident at a match, the player will be required to attend a tribunal hearing set down by BASKETBALL SA. Should the player be found guilty of an offence, a fine is imposed by BASKETBALL SA and the amount of fine will be invoiced and payable by the player involved. Naturally the Club does not condone any misdemeanours that result in any penalty against a team or the Club. The Executive Committee will investigate any matter that is presented in writing before the committee and take whatever discipline action it deems necessary.

Coaches

• Never ridicule or yell at a child for making a mistake or losing a game. • Teach your players to play by the rules. • Be reasonable in your demands on young players' time, energy and enthusiasm. • Whenever possible, group players to ensure that everyone has a reasonable

chance of success. • Avoid overplaying the talented players. All players need and deserve equal time. • Ensure that equipment and facilities meet safety standards and are appropriate to

the age and ability of the players. • Develop team respect for the ability of opponents and for the judgement of

officials and opposing coaches. • Follow the advice of physician when determining when an injured player is ready

to recommence training and competition. • Keep up to date with the latest coaching practices and the principles of growth

development of children.

Parents

• Encourage children to participate, if they are interested. If a child is not willing, do not force him or her.

• Focus upon the child's efforts and performance rather than the overall outcome of the event.

• Teach children that an honest effort is as important as victory, so that the result of each game is accepted without undue disappointment.

• Encourage children to always participate according to the rules. • Never ridicule or yell at a child for making a mistake or losing a game. • Remember children are involved in an organised sport for their enjoyment, not

yours. • Remember that children learn best from example. Applaud good play by all

teams. • If you disagree with an official, raise the issue through the appropriate channels

rather than questioning the official's judgement and honesty in public. Remember, most officials give their time and effort for your child's involvement.

• Support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abuse from sporting activities. • Recognise the value and importance of volunteer coaches. They give of their time

and resources to provide recreational activities for the children and deserve your support.

• Avoid use of derogatory language based on gender. Please remember that as parents, you play a huge role in supporting our children who play basketball for the club. Should you have any queries or issues to raise at all, please do so either through your team manager or directly to the Executive Committee. In the event that a parent or spectator is reported by a referee, that person will be expected to appear at a tribunal set down by BASKETBALL SA. If found guilty of any offence, a fine is invoiced by BASKETBALL SA directly to the club, which will be passed on to the parent or spectator concerned.

Spectators

• Remember that children play organised sport for fun. They are not playing for the entertainment of spectators only, nor are they miniature professionals.

• Applaud good performance and efforts from each team. Congratulate all participants upon their performance regardless of the game outcome.

• Respect the official's decision. If there is a disagreement, follow the appropriate procedure in order to question the decision and teach the children to do likewise.

• Never ridicule or scold a child for making a mistake during a competition. Positive comments are motivational.

• Condemn the use of violence in any form, be it by spectator, coaches, officials or players.

• Show respect for your team's opponents. Without them there would be no game. • Encourage players to follow the rules and the official's decisions. • Demonstrate appropriate social behaviour by not using foul language, harassing

players, coaches or officials. • Avoid use of derogatory language based on gender. In the event that a spectator is reported by a referee, that person will be expected to appear at a tribunal set down by BASKETBALL SA. If found guilty of any offence, a fine is invoiced by BASKETBALL SA directly to the club, which will be passed on to the spectator concerned.

Drugs and Alcohol

The Forestville Eagles Basketball Club does not condone the use or taking of any banned drugs as defined under the Association bylaws nor those banned as illegal under State or Federal legislation. This policy extends to the consumption of alcohol. The Club will not tolerate any player, Senior or Junior attending a club designated training session or match under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Any player reported by a coach, team manager, or official as being under the influence of drugs or alcohol will be requested to appear before the Club Disciplinary Committee to discuss their actions. If a player is found to be in breach of the Club's policy an appropriate penalty will be determined by the committee and where this involves a junior player the parents will be consulted accordingly. Senior players should be reminded that under the By-laws they are subject to random testing and penalties can also be imposed by the Association Executive.

Abuse of Umpires The Forestville Eagles Basketball Club implements a zero tolerance policy towards abuse of umpires. This policy severely limits any opportunity for spectators, coaches and players to communicate with officials. We realise that it is important for officials to develop good communication skills, however we believe it is more important to adopt a policy which will help improve the quality and number of umpires. The purpose of this zero abuse policy is to create an environment which is conducive to recruiting, developing and retaining umpiring talent, for the long term benefit of everyone.

Spectators

Spectators are not permitted to discuss, criticise, query, or ask for an interpretation of, umpiring decisions, at any time. All breaches will be reported to the Forestville Executive Committee. A first breach will result in a warning. A second breach, or any major breach, may result in the spectator being suspended from attending games.

Players

Players are not permitted to discuss, criticise, query, or ask for an interpretation of, umpiring decisions, at any time. All breaches will be reported to the Junior Coaching Director. A first breach will result in a warning. A second breach, or any major breach, may result in the player being suspended from games, at the discretion of the coaching director.

Coaches

Coaches are permitted to query issues with umpires or umpires in charge, provided it happens in a calm and courteous manner. Any argumentative, critical, sarcastic, repetitive or frivolous communication will not be tolerated, regardless of any justification. All breaches will be reported to the Junior Coaching Director. A first breach will result in a warning. A second breach, or any major breach, may result in the coach being suspended from games, at the discretion of the coaching director.
