Peru's carbon quantified: Economic and conservation boon Today scientists unveiled the first high-resolution map of the carbon stocks stored on land throughout the entire country of Peru. The new and improved methodology used to make the map marks a sea change for future market-based carbon economies. The new carbon map also reveals Peru's extremely high ecological diversity and it provides the critical input to studies of deforestation and forest degradation for conservation, land use, and enforcement purposes. Peru will have a new Forest Inventory, this information will help to develop sector policies 2014.- July 31. The project receives technical support from FAO and will run for five years. Each year 20% of the information of the forests established sample will be completed. For the upcoming years the development of the National Forest Inventory (INF, for its acronym in Spanish) of Peru, will allow to collect and provide information about the current situation of forests in the country. It will serve for decision-making on forest policy. FAO’s technical advisor for the INF, Carla Ramirez, states that the lifting of field information, collecting biophysical data, already has begun in areas of the north coast and in Loreto. "Biophysical measurement are referred to measurements on the trees, their forest type and the species of trees are identified, the most important measures are taken for biomass volumes calculation, also to identify some non- timber forest products and see how important they are for the communities, "she said.
