It’s straight talk from folks who are easy to talk to, who know the business inside and out—and whose integrity is as solid as the lumber we provide.

Hulett, WY—Neiman Enterprises Inc., with corporate offices here, produces over250 million board feet of boards, shop, and studs annually. With continuing effortsto be their customersʼ preferred supplier, the company has invested in several up-grades at each of its four sawmills focusing on increased quality and product offer-ings.Vice President and CEO Jim D. Neiman recognizes the importance for progress.

He said, “Itʼs vital to the health of the company that we continue to invest in newtechnology and equipment so we can continue to offer high quality products in a dy-namic market place. The planned and completed projects of 2015 are part of ourlong term strategy to keep up with the ever-changing needs of the consumer.”Projects at the Ponderosa Pine mills include the Comact GradExpert at Spearfish

for the head saw as well as improve-ments to the optimized edger. The ability to produce quality milled

products hinges on the companyʼs dryingcapability. Proper kiln operation is criticalto correctly drying and seasoning Pon-derosa Pine. Over the course of the lastyear Neiman has made strategic im-provements and maintenance to the kilnsat all four sawmills with projects rangingfrom partial upgrades to complete re-builds. Most notably, Devils Tower is inthe process of rebuilding one of the exist-ing kilns, and Spearfish Forest Productshas recently finished a substantial over-haul to the boiler that produces the heatfor the kilns to create a more desirabledrying effect. The two big projects at the stud mill in

Montrose, CO, were both aimed at thefacilities ability to increase production. One was aimed at increasing productionat the sawmill by upgrading the trimmer, sorter and stacker, and the second at in-creasing the drying capacity and consis-tency at the kilns. The new USNRequipment purchased for the sawmill wasa major upgrade from the original equip-ment that was purchased with this facilityin 2012. The upgrade increased the num-ber of sorts and capability at the stackerto match the potential production capac-ity of the mill. By increasing the sortingcapacity the product mix could be morewidely diversified to better suit the needsof the customer base. In line moisturemeters were also installed to allow thematerial to be sorted by moisture contentto allow for more consistent drying. The Montrose kiln project, which was

completed earlier this spring, was a totaloverhaul of the existing drying system. The kilns were reconfigured with Wellonscomputerized multi-zone controls whichcreated five zones within each kiln. Theywere completely re-plumbed and newvalves and bucket traps were installed.Frequency drive controlled fans werealso installed to improve airflow withineach kiln. The overhaul of the kilns in-creased the drying capacity by decreas-ing the average drying time of productsby as much as 40 percent due to bettersteam control and improved air flow.More importantly, the new controls willproduce a much more consistent dryingenvironment vastly improving the qualityof the product offering.Neiman Enterprises continues to seek

out and implement new technologies, equipment, and processes to ensure thatthe products they produce exceed theexpectations of the customer. stilled along the way.If someone were to ask “What is the most

common statement people make when theyvisit the mill for the first time?” the answer, un-equivocally, would be, “I canʼt believe howclean your mill is.” And itʼs true; but thenagain, anyone who knows Clay or Brookeknows that anything otherwise would be un-thinkable. This simple observation of the stateof the facility is an indicator of how everythingat Anbrook is done.“Quality Isnʼt Expensive, Itʼs Priceless,” the

company motto coined by Clayton back in theearly 80ʼs, holds true even more so today inan era of cheaper, faster, easier. The blueprintfor how Anbrook products are made is neversecond-guessed because everyone whoworks for the company knows that there isonly one way to do things: Quite frankly, ifyouʼre going to do something, do it right. Within the Anbrook camp, there is a strongbelief that all homeowners choosing Cedar should have the highest quality roofingproducts beautifying and protecting their home; a premium quality roof is an insurancepolicy on typically oneʼs largest investment. Anbrook products are manufactured bypeople who have become masters of their craft through many years of working for thecompany; some employees have been part of the team for over 25 years, and there isjust as much pride for this loyal and skilled group as there is for the products they pro-duce every day. “Anbrook products cost more.” This statement has been voiced more times than one

can count, and thereʼs no arguing the point, they generally have a higher price tag; itrequires a larger investment to make the best of anything. So why do Anbrook shakesand shingles cost more? Well, they actually donʼt “cost” more, but they do have ahigher price than most because, quite simply, theyʼre better: Better built, better look-

The Meeker Family has a long and dynamic history in the British Columbia forest in-dustry. Four generations ago, in 1906, Henry C. Meeker moved from Connecticut toMerritt, BC, purchasing and rebuilding the Canford mill and renaming it the Nicola Val-ley Pine Mill, manufacturing lumber and building a railway to access valuable log sup-ply as well providing the city of Merritt with power. In the 1930ʼs, his two sons, Toke and Lincoln moved to Mission, starting Meeker

Cedar Products; Toke proved to be a trailblazer in the shake and shingle industry, cre-ating the automated split and resawn shake, the tapersawn shake as well as many ofthe packing and measurement methods still used in the business today. He travelledextensively through the 1940ʼs-70ʼs, marketing shakes and shingles in the U.S. andpaving the way for many of the manufacturers of the day.

Tokeʼs six sons, Cedar run-ning strong in their veins, allventured into the family busi-ness in different capacities. Inthe early 1970ʼs, middle sonClayton branched out andbuilt Clayton Cedar Products,a large shake mill in PittMeadows, and in the later70ʼs, a smaller one-machinemill next door, naming it An-brook Industries. This opera-tion focused on the “boutique”concept, based on his per-sonal ideology of “only thebest is good enough.” Over

the years Anbrook grew in capacity, but was always purposely kept comparativelysmall in the industry to maintain the model of bespoke shingle production. In the early 1990ʼs, Claytonʼs daughter, Brooke, ventured into the family business

and over 20 years has grown into running Anbrook with the same level of uncompro-mised commitment to quality that her father, grandfather and great-grandfather in-

Anbrook shingles are specified for many of the most discriminatinghomes and resorts in the world.

As fourth generation in the business, Brookeproudly carries on the Meeker family legacy atAnbrook Industries Ltd.

that the value proposition Anbrook prod-ucts offer ultimately creates a win fortheir business. Anbrook products dispelthe notion that a higher price tag equalsa higher cost, proving time and againthat those “ah-ha” moments still do existfor builders and homeowners alike. The business has grown over the

years to all corners of the globe; prod-ucts ship daily from the mill in PittMeadows on the banks of the mightyFraser River, to eventually adorn someof the finest bespoke residences andresorts in the world. The high qualityAnbrook experience does not end withthe product in the pallet; this mentalitycarries through the entire supply chainprocess, including carefully packagedfreight, top-notch customer service anda commitment to making sure the cus-tomer gets exactly what they ask for, ormore, every time. The Anbrook productline ranges from Jumbo, Heavy andMedium Handsplit and Resawn Shakesto Royal, Perfection and Fivex Shinglesas well as all lengths and thicknesses ofTapersawn Shakes, in both WesternRed and Alaskan Yellow Cedar. “We are four generations strong in the

Cedar shake and shingle manufacturingbusiness, and we are passionate aboutmaking sure homeowners, architectsand contractors know that they have ac-cess to a product that surpasses allquality standards. Our products all bearthe CERTI trademark of the CedarShake & Shingle Bureau and we werethe first shingle mill accredited to theSustainable Forestry Initiative.
