An Evening of Learning and Entertainment

The January Swingers Night swung extremely well. After an hour of practice on the range with Martin and Steve, of our professional staff, in attendance, the 20 hardy members and guests returned to the bar. They were joined by the ones who preferred the company of the roaring fire and all enjoyed a meal of hot soup, sandwiches and chips. After the meal certain members performed in front of the fire! As Bruce Forsyth would say, “ a good game, good game”, with the men performing better than the ladies with a score of 31 against 28.

There were 23 people in attendance and all said that they had enjoyed the whole evening. Thanks go to our professionals for passing-on tips on the range, which were much appreciated. Martin commented that they also had enjoyed the evening. Based on the result of this event a second is to be held on 13

th February, information has already been posted on the notice board in the hall.

Open to members and their wives/husbands/partners/friends (golfers or not) meeting on the range for 7.00 pm prompt.

All you need to bring are

a few clubs and some warm clothing Range-balls will be provided for you to “do your own thing”, our professional will be on hand to give advice if required. When the cold feeling dictates we will adjourn to the bar for hot soup, sandwiches and chips. Once re-energised the “entertainment” will begin involving all who wish to take part.

WHAT IS GOING ON.???? Just when I’ve got one problem sorted out another one comes along this time bigger and smellier! I’m talking about the Ladies Toilets on the 15th. I’ve not had any more complaints regarding male members using the facilities but now we’ve had two instances recently of (how can I put this delicately) packages being deposited and soiled tissues being left behind. This facility can only cope with liquids which soak away, anything else has to be physically removed. Lesley Burton has dealt with this so far, which is above and beyond her role as a Marshal. So please, please, please show some respect for your fellow members and visitors and leave the toilets as you would wish to find them.

NEW YEAR SCRAMBLE RESULTS

The first competition of 2019 took place on Saturday 5 January.

The Competitions Committee had received several requests for a

different format for the scheduled competitions so we tried a

Florida Scramble instead of the standard Texas Scramble.

In a FLORIDA SCRAMBLE all four tee off and then select the best

drive, as usual. The player whose ball is selected does NOT play

his ball. The other three play their shots. Likewise, the player

whose second shot is selected does not play their ball but the first player rejoins

so that again there are three hitting shots from the selected spot. This continues

until a ball is holed.

RESULTS

1st place with a score of 56.7

George Johnson/Toby Morrison/Scott Jones/Lewis Gregory

2nd place with a score of 59.0

Neil Armson/Kelly Naylor/Anil Tailor/Lawrence Ward

3rd place with a score of 59.3

Howard Marshall/Robert Lund/Andrew Burbank/Ant Chamberlain

Well that is January over – arguably the longest month of the year after the Christmas and New Year festivities. I had a great start to the year with a few days in Spain playing golf in lovely warm conditions, see photos below. I would thoroughly recommend playing golf in the winter sunshine abroad – the only downside is coming back to the UK and the cold weather! We are now in to the season of annual meetings and thoughts start to turn to spring and the club competitions starting again. Make sure you know and understand all the new rules that have come in from January 2019. There are a couple of social events scheduled in for February and March as featured in this newsletter, which take a lot of time and effort from committee members so it would be great to see them well supported. I can speak from personal experience and say they are always good fun and well organised. Just a reminder that the ladies section continue to play regularly during the winter months with the Tuesday block booking (usually a 9 hole competition or coffee and a chat if weather inclement) and the Saturday morning group. If you want any further details on either please contact either Joan Boot, Vice-Captain or me in the first instance. I would like to finish by thanking everyone who donated to the foodbank collections.

Hinckley foodbank were very appreciative of the donations and you can be sure they will help a lot of people who find themselves having to rely on the foodbanks for numerous reasons.

“Be my vice” is what Kel said Three little words to fill you with dread It is an honour or, so they say I just hope it doesn’t affect my play There’s not much to it, it will be fun Why didn’t I take the chance and run? Well I don’t do dresses or speak posh And can my swearwords be stronger than “gosh”? You must attend meetings and give your views Report back to all and keep on top of the news A 12-month intro to being number one Being the vice had now been and gone 7th April and it’s the Captains Drive in My special year is now about to begin Just make sure you get the ball off the tee Will the rest of the year be that easy?? (I somehow doubt it) Having a good Vice is the key Booty was the one for me She is a rock and knows it all (well almost) Together we will have a ball! Knowing the trouble makers that is the key Naming no names let’s leave that be! Good Communication is also a must In e-mails I will always trust! (just the odd one!) Captains week in June, came and went Yet more of my annual leave well spent?! The Memorial Rose Bowl is a special day It’s always good to see lots of ladies play.

July and August see a lot going on Opens and club championships to be won Once again I‘ve got Kel bending my ears I should have known that would end in tears! (well done Kel!) So, September is here, and Autumn is nigh How did the summer just pass me by? Both Captains away days are now scheduled in A chance to have fun, eat and maybe drink the odd gin (or bottle of wine if Betty or Sue T) There will be prizes galore and lots to be won But the main emphasis of the day is to have fun A lovely course and hopefully the sun will shine All the time and effort should mean things turn out fine? October should hopefully see things quieten down The competition season will end, and golfers will frown As the nights draw in even the meetings get less A chance to reflect and wonder how I got in this mess So, Joan will soon have to start thinking ahead She’s done it before so there will be no dread Not sure if hubby Ken will be her greatest fan Especially when he hears of her captaincy plan!! Those 3 little words nearly 2 years ago Why Didn’t I just end up saying “no” A great journey for sure with lots to remember But roll on April and going back to just being a member!

A CAPTAIN’S TALE

In recent months we have discovered that we have golfers amongst us who are capable poets - namely Mel Walker, our Ladies Captain and Steve Hathaway a member of the Seniors Section. Below is the ‘lament’ from the pen of Mel Walker relating her experience as Ladies Captain.

“Didn’t we have a lovely day the day we went to Bondhay” Twenty-three intrepid golfers made the long trek to Bondhay GC and were rewarded with an excellent day out organised by Eddie Ruck. The journey was smooth, the weather fine and the course in excellent condition. Bacon cobs on arrival were soon devoured and we were all

off to the first tee with an air of excitement. Sadly, the abundance of trees and bunkers meant that, for most of us, the course was the winner. Not so Derek Walker who scored a magnificent 39 points to claim first prize. Our hosts were welcoming and a variety of meals were enjoyed by all.

Congratulations to Derek and a big thank you to Eddie. We are all looking forward to the next one!

Overall winner: Derek Walker 39 points Second: Dave Deacon 34 points on countback Nearest the pins: Mick Peel & Mike Bancroft

NEW YEAR NEWS from the PRO SHOP Forest Hill Golf Club Members Newsletter Page 9

Queen Victoria died on 22nd January 1901, at Osborne House on the Isle of Wight. More than any other monarch in recent times, Queen Victoria’s death seemed to herald the end of an era. The second longest serving monarch in British history, (her reign recently over taken by the incumbent Queen Elizabeth II) for many British citizens Victoria was the only monarch they ever lived under. Her reign coincided with a period of dramatic change in British culture, politics and society, many of which can still be felt today. Queen Victoria has become synonymous with this crucial period in history: the Victorian era. Victoria became heir to the throne shortly after her birth in 1819, following the death of her father. After the death of her uncle William IV, Victoria ascended to the British throne in 1837. She was just eighteen years old. Away from the royal family, powerful forces were changing the shape of Britain, dragging it into modernity. At home industrialisation was creating an increasingly urbanised society, changing the nature of labour relations and turning England into a manufacturing power house. Abroad, an increasingly global looking foreign policy was starting to take shape which would culminate in Victoria being crowned Empress of India in 1876. Through Queen Victoria’s reign, and with her support, these factors culminated in the British Empire, one so large it was joked the sun never set on it. The modern, constitutional monarchy that we know today was largely shaped during Victoria’s reign.

Learner drivers on motorways

Watch out for learner drivers on motorways! For the first time, drivers who are still learning prior to the driving test are allowed to practice on motorways.

Fortunately, it’s only as long as they’re with a qualified instructor and are at the wheel of a vehicle with dual controls so the instructor can take over if necessary.

However, there won’t be any requirement in the test itself for a learner to show their skills on motorways.

New ‘smart’ motorway fines

Drivers can be fined £100 and have three points put on their licence if they’re caught in certain designated closed lanes on so-called ‘smart motorways’.

Motorists might find themselves in trouble if they’re caught driving in lanes marked with a red ‘x’. The ‘x’ is usually indicated in automated signs that hang above the road.

Such lanes are usually closed when there’s a serious blockage ahead, or after accidents, and cameras will be trained on the lanes to catch offenders.

New types of licences

Drivers who have recently passed their test potentially face harsher penalties during the first two years on the road after this year.

Speeding, using a mobile phone and careless driving may all be punished more rigorously than for those who have been driving for longer.

Other restrictions for new drivers are expected to be imposed involving curfews for driving times, the number of passengers, engine size and alcohol limits.

A pilot scheme is being tested in Northern Ireland this year and, if deemed a success, it could be rolled out across the rest of the UK.

Overtaking cyclists

Until this year, it didn’t really matter how close a driver got to a cyclist when overtaking one as long as they didn’t hit them. Drivers have simply been expected to be aware of how close they are, without specific guidance

However, from now on the Highway Code states they could face fines of £100 if they don’t leave at least 1.5 metres, or 4.9 feet, between their vehicle and a cyclist.

Parking remotely

Under the old legislation it was illegal to park your car using a mobile device, whether you’re in the car or outside.

However, the new Code rules reflect the fact that many cars can now be parked remotely. They allow drivers to be outside or inside the vehicle and use a device to instruct it to park, as long as they’re within 6 metres.

It may be a long time since you had to pass your theory test, but it is well worth casting an eye through the latest version of the highway code. There have been a host of changes made and this year is the first full year they’ll come into effect. These changes could leave you out of pocket, like fines for passing cyclists too closely. A few of the changes are:-

CHANGES TO THE HIGHWAY CODE
