ONLY THE GOSPEL IS REVOLUTIONARYA conversation with Antonio Carriero

The Roman Catholic Church’s Number Two – and the head of Pope Francis’ unprecedented Council of Cardinal Advisers – reveals the Roman Curia’s drastic revision plan and the revolutionary programme that will lead the Church into the future – less and less centred around Rome and more and more globalised and universal.

He’s the Roman Catholic Church’s Number Two after Pope Fran-cis. He was among the candidates of the last two conclaves. He is close friends with Jorge Mario Bergoglio. On April 13th 2013 Pope Francis appointed Maradiaga head of the first Council of Cardinal Ad-visers in the Church’s history. The Council consists of eight cardinals chosen worldwide to assist the Pope in guiding the Roman Catholic Church and in revising the Curia and the churches in every continent.

During his conversations with Vatican Insider reporter Antonio Carriero, Maradiaga tells the story of his vocation, his great friendship with Pope Francis and the great challenges he faces as a cardinal. He talks about the almighty Roman Curia, often seen as a plotting and overbearing Big Brother; the Pope; the economic and political pow-ers that be; and the issue of transparency in the management of the Vatican’s funds.

“Francis is a revolutionary pope. His revolution comes

from the Gospel. He isn’t changing the Church’s doctrine

like many people say; in fact, he’s changing the Church’s

relationship with the world.”

ÓSCAR ANDRÉS RODRÍGUEZ MARADIAGA joined the Salesian Congrega-tion in 1961. He was ordained on June 28th 1970. He graduated in Philosophy, Theology and Moral Theology and studied Clinical Psy-chology and Psychotherapy. He taught elementary school; he then lectured chemistry, physics, moral theology and ecclesiology. On 1993 he was appointed archbishop of Tegucigalpa. He is renowned for his battle against drugs and corruption and is forced to travel un-der escort. He is renowned for his battle against drugs and corruption and is forced to travel under escort and for his position in occasion of the Iraq bombings in 2003 against the trade of weapons of mass de-struction. He was proclaimed cardinal by Pope John Paul II on 2001, thus becoming the first cardinal ever from the Honduras. Pope Francis appointed Maradiagahead of the Council of Cardinal Advisers tasked with helping him govern the Roman Catholic Church.

This book shows us Bergoglio’s reform from within – a reform that is frowned upon by a large

part of the almighty Roman Curia. It is also a very personal tale of the author’s great friendship

with Pope Francis.

JOURNEYING

An outstanding journey side by side with Pope Francis.

Andrea Tornielli is a front-seater on the papal plane, having taken part in all the apostolic journeys since the Pope’s first symbolic trip to Lampedusa. Here, he explains the meaning of apostolic journeys, detailing the major themes and the prophetic acts of the current pon-tificate through his journeys with Pope Francis. Each story deals with a crucial theme of Francis’ pontificate and comes with anecdotes experienced first-hand during the journeys themselves, the public meetings in stadiums and squares, and the private meetings with prominent figures such as Obama, Castro, Bartholomew I, Russian patriarch Kirill, Abu Mazen, Shimon Peres and many more.

A unique portrayal of the pope travelling the world to stir consciences against the globalisation of indifference.

THE NAME OF GOD IS MERCY. A conversation with Andrea Tornielli

The first book by Pope Francis.“Mercy is God’s defining feature. It is his name. There are no

situations we can’t get out of; we are not condemned to sink in the quicksand.”

As down-to-earth and straightforward as ever, Pope Francis speaks to every man and woman in the world, setting up an intimate and per-sonal dialogue with them. The focus is mercy – a theme he holds dearer than any and the kingpin of his personal story and his papacy.

Every page shimmers with the Pope’s urge to reach out to all the souls within and without the Church. Throughout his conversation with Vatican scholar Andrea Tornielli, Pope Francis recalls childhood memo-ries and touching episodes from his time as a pastor, and uses them to explain the reasons behind the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy he wanted so strongly. Despite the ethical and theological issues, he stresses how the Church cannot close the door on anyone; instead, its duty is to en-courage people to take responsibility for their actions and distance them-selves from any harm they have done.

Pope Francis also tackles the relationship between mercy, justice and corruption. And he reminds the Christians that believe they are among the good that “Even the Pope is a man who needs God’s mercy.”

HAPPINESS IN THIS LIFE

A heart-felt meditation on the ultimate meaning of existence.

Beginning with the famous Gospel verse – “…there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or chil-dren or lands, for My sake and the gospel’s, who shall not receive a hun-dredfold now in this time…” – Pope Francis shows the way to genuine self-accomplishment through non-tangible values often scorned by our increasingly secular society: brotherhood, friendship, solidarity, freedom, equality, love and culture.

voices> POPE FRANCIS WHO AM I TO JUDGE?

“The Gospel encourages us to be humble and not to point fingers at others or pass judgement on them; instead, we should reach out to them and never feel we’re above them.”

With these words, Pope Francis began the Synod on the Family, opening up to opportunities that until then had seemed unthinkable for the leaders of the Church and inviting people to practice Jesus’ explicit commandment: “Do not judge lest you be judged. For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you.”

Sexuality, same-sex unions, contraception, domestic partner-ships, new families but also religious freedom, ecology, finance, and new forms of poverty and enslavement are issues that call on freedom of conscience and the Christian doctrine alike. Pope Francis gives his own unpublished interpretation based on a thoroughly forward-think-ing theological vision. He opens up on both a human and religious level that speaks to more and more non-believers and is sparking strong debate inside and outside the Church.

The hardening of a judging heart – something the Pope calls “sclerocardia” – is the consequence of the I folding in on itself – a selfish, isolated I wrapped up in obsolete traditions that trample hu-man dignity. A heart of stone should become a heart of flesh. And for Pope Francis, it is only by letting the words of the Gospel drip into our stiffened spirit that we can make it throbbing and compassionate.

religious non fiction> POPE FRANCIS DAY IS CHRISTMAS

Pope Francis teaches us how to celebrate Christmas day by day, as Christmas is not just a day of festivity but it is the incarnation of the Gospel in every day of our lives.

In the Holy Year of Mercy, Pope Francis teaches us all to cel-ebrate Christmas 365 days a year.

“The star of the Baby Jesus pierced the darkness of history. Night turned to day. Just like the three wise men, we have our own guiding light – and we needn’t fear it.” Pope Francis.

Living Christmas doesn’t mean celebrating one day of festivity out of respect for religion and tradition. Pope Francis claims that the Christian meaning of the occasion lies in the incarnation of the Gospel in our everyday lives, in our decision to follow Jesus once and for all along his radical path of simplicity, poverty, self-respect and respect of others.

Nurturing patience day by day, facing pain without giving up hope, reconciling with creation and embracing “integral ecology” – these are the steps recommended by the Pope along this path of meditation that invites us to live Christmas 365 days a year.

Just like the three wise men, we have our own guiding light and we needn’t fear it.

MERRY CHRISTMAS. The path to celebration

Pope Francis tells about the most authentic sense of Christmas. The most affectionate greeting from the most communicative pope in the history of the Catholic Church. A book for celebrating Christmas and to understand the universal meaning of the Mercy Jubilee open-ing on 8 December 2015.

Waiting, birth, family, life, gift, pardon…but also cradle, stars, shepherds, the Three Wise Men.

These are words in Pope Francis’s Merry Christmas message. In this Holy Year of Mercy, he invites everyone to stop before the Child of Bethlehem and let his or her heart be moved. Bergoglio speaks of tenderness and God’s capacity to penetrate the human soul through the light touch of love. The planet is once again devastated by wars, misery and persecution. Francis takes to heart the wounds of human-ity and does not disdain to exhort men and women of goodwill who hope for a better world to let themselves be caressed by God because “God’s caresses give us peace, strength and the desire to change”.

“You are Christmas when you decide to be born again every day and let God enter your soul.

You are the Christmas tree when you vigorously resist the tem-pests and hardships of life.

You are the Christmas bell when you call others to gather and try to unite them.

You are also the light of Christmas when you illuminate the lives of others with goodness, patience joy and generosity.

You are the Christmas gifts when you are a true friend and brother to all mankind.

You are the Christmas greetings when you forgive and make peace even when you are suffering.

You are Christmas dinner when you satiate the poor man next to you with bread and hope.

You are Christmas night when you receive the Saviour humbly and consciously in the silence of the night, without noises or great celebrations.

You are a smile of confidence and tenderness in the inner peace of an eternal Christmas that establishes the kingdom within you.

A Merry Christmas to all those who resemble Christmas.”

GOD LAUGHS. HUMOUR AND JOY IN THE FAITH

Humour is wisdom. Smiling is the sign of an open heart. Pope Francis tells that the light of humour makes you an authentic human person mirroring in the smiling face of God.

«My son, according to your means, do not deprive yourself of a happy day». This phrase from the Book of Sirach is one of the Bible quotations best loved by Pope Francis, who in this reflection on the smiling face of God, never tires of repeating the invitation to «always be joyous», even in the face of difficulty, suffering, criticism and ag-gressiveness; thus giving to yourself the lightness and self-irony that make an individual – man or woman – an authentic, fully human per-son.

Bergoglio warns against the «funereal face illness» like that of grim and surly people, who think that to be taken seriously they must plaster their faces with sadness and severity and treat oth-ers – especially those they hold inferior – with rigidity, harness and arrogance. Irony is wisdom. The believer, who should know better than others the surrender to God’s design, intuits this, but so does the non-believer who encounters on his way the consolation of love.

«THE FAITH IS CELEBRATION THE SAINTS ARE AMONG US... AND THEY ARE SMILING AT US.»

THE GOSPEL OF MARY

A poignant meditation on the character of the Virgin Mary and the influence she had on Pope Francis’ experience.

One cannot thoroughly understand the tenderness that characterizes the teachings of Pope Francis unless one catches the importance of the Mother of God in his experience of faith. There’s a particular title our Pope favours to venerate and invoke her: Mary Who Undoes the Knots.

“Mary overcomes all obstacles and relieves all pains”

This special Marian devotion, little known in Europe but widely ex-tended in South America, is what Pope Francis practices and has promoted since his ascension to the papacy.

This voyage where we discover the Marian spirituality of Pope Francis is a collection of his most touching thoughts and significant teachings.

LOVE IS CONTAGIOUS. The gospel of justice

There’s a common thread in Bergoglio’s papacy: the topic of jus-tice, which to Pope Francis’ view is just another word to say love.

“Love is contagious” Bergoglio writes. “Just as love tends to spread, so does injustice”.

To Pope Francis, each of our actions has a consequence; even the smallest trace of injustice and wickedness hidden in our society is a potential threaten for our world. The Pope’s continual calls for respect for human dignity and the civil rights are the leitmotiv of his teachings, summarized in this book.

“How perilous is that tired rituality that leads us to lose the marvel and enthusiasm for living the gospel of brotherhood and justice!”

There is also another justice, which Bergoglio never tires of referring to: if we live according to the law of “and eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth”, we shall never be free of the spiral of evil. Only the justice of Jesus – who pardoned his assassins from the Cross – can redeem us, imposing a judgment of quality on our earthly life towards the mysteri-ous horizon of (Divine) Mercy.

In this gospel of love and justice, the reader will discover an itinerary from which to take inspiration, and to guide his choices and actions in his day to day life.

A poignant meditation on the passion for good and for justice. An anthology of Pope Francis’ words.

THE LITTLE FLOWERS OF POPE FRANCIS

From the Vatican expert and friend of Jorge Mario Bergoglio, the one who foresaw his election, recognized by the international press as the non plus ultra of Vatican experts great and small stories about the Pope who has won everyone’s heart.

From the very first moments after his appearance on the balcony in St. Peter’s Square, with his simple and immediate way of being, he entered the hearts of millions of the faithful. After the first months of his papacy, that feeling gives no sign of lessening, rather it has grown and includes the sympathies of many non-believers. Andrea Tornielli presents in this book a collection of anecdotes, episodes, great and small stories of the pope’s daily life. Most of these events and curiosities have never been published: from the letter sent to the woman prisoner who prepares the hosts for the morning mass to the phone call to the sisters of Buenos Aires, a few days after the election, so they would remember to feed his little birds. The Pope, shepherd of souls, who does not cease to be a priest, able to speak with chiefs of state and to great religious leaders, and a moment later to phone a boy who wrote to him and who needs comfort. The Pope who shuns any kind of court splendor and has chosen to live in the spartan Santa Maria residence. The Pope who moves us with his ca-pacity to be close to those who suffer. The Pope who wishes to reform the Curia and the Church, starting by giving the example. An extraordinary voyage full of curious and enjoyable things to bring one closer to Francis, the person and his message.

“Tornielli is one of the best, if not the best, Vatican reporter out there. Period. He is the best-sourced, most accurate and one of the most knowledgeable reporters among the unique band of “Vaticanisti” who travel with the pope, digest theo-logical treateses as bedtime reading and count cardinals and monsignors as friends.”

NICOLE WINFIELD, Associated Press

“There is a special gentle-ness of which Pope Francis is a master. It is not naivety, but strength.”

FRANCIS. TOGETHERLIFE, IDEAS, WORDS OF THE POPE WHO WILL CHANGE THE CHURCH

“Francis, rebuild my Church!” That is how St. Francis of Assisi heard the call of Christ. It is also how Jorge Mario Bergoglio, at the age of 76, seems to have accepted his election to the papacy with the choice of a name that no other pope has ever chosen. Who is Pope Francis, elected in one of the shortest conclaves in history? Who is the man chosen to be the first pope from the Americas and the first Jesuit pope? How does he see the world and his ministry?

In short, what is the mind and heart of this pope of a new world. In the words, the ideas, and the personal recollections of Pope Francis - including material up to the final hours before his election - the most highly regarded Vatican observer on the international scene reveals the personality of this man of God, gentle and humble.

It is the story of the humble pastor of one of the world’s largest archdioceses; a cardinal who takes the bus, talks with common folk, and lives simply. It is the story of why the cardinal electors of the Catholic Church set aside political and diplomatic calculations to elect a pope to lead the renewal and purification of the worldwide Church of our time.

This complete biography offers the keys to understanding the man who was a surprise choice, even a kind of revolutionary choice, for pope.

“Tornielli is one of the best, if not the best, Vatican re-porter out there. If anyone needed evidence, take his reporting of the conclave that elected Pope Fran-cis: his reports about the behind-the-scenes negotia-tions before the conclave were cited by cardinals as the reason for imposing a media blackout on the pro-cess. It didn’t work.”Nicole Winfield

THE SUN WITHIN. Inner life

A stunning unpublished text from 1975 found among Carlo Maria Martini’s papers, this book is a ten-lesson treatise on the beauty of spiritual life.

The former rector of the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome and future cardinal of Milan held a course of spiritual exercises on the life of the soul. This unpublished work found by the Jesuits of the Martini Foun-dation shows us not just the man and the pastor that would be greatly respected by the ecclesiastical and secular world during his time in Milan but also the investigator of the very depths of the human soul. This book is a sort of inner life manual in ten steps: 1. Listen to the soul’s real questions; 2. Feel the radical question of death; 3. Inves-tigate God’s silence; 4. Come to terms with the obtrusiveness of the I; 5. Abandon every form of naivety (good intentions are not enough to change the world); 6. Choose the path of good, 7. Face the Cross without any masochism; 8. Find the signs of Providence; 9. Move from recognition to thankfulness; 10. Strive to fill the Church and the world with all that is beautiful, good and right.

SISTER DEATH. The dignity of living and dying

This pamphlet will have people talking. One of the most authoritative exponents of the Roman Catholic hierarchy, the spiritual assistant of the community of Sant’Egidio and the President of the Pontifical Council for the Family, Paglia tackles one of the most controversial issues of bioethics – an issue that still sparks bitter debates in Italy and other Western countries.

Is euthanasia really true to its name (literally good death)? Where does the dignity of life and death begin and end? More and more coun-tries in Europe and all around the world have passed laws on eutha-nasia and assisted suicide. People have the right to live but cannot be forced to live. If someone wants to live until their life has run its course, fine. But euthanasia advocates say that society has no right to stop someone from dying if the person freely chooses to do so. Indeed, attempted suicide is not a crime in Italy. And if suicide is not a crime, why should euthanasia be?

GOD, HOMELANDS AND FAMILIES

The chairwoman of Italian women theologians joins the debate on the family, domestic partnership rights, gender theory, the reality of homosexual love and – taking her cue from Pope Francis’ post-synod exhortation – she spurs Christians to radically change their mentality.

«What makes a family a true family? In wartime Italy, orphans in

cities and in the countryside alike were brought up by their grandpar-ents, aunts and uncles, cousins or even their neighbours. If there was true love they were immediately considered as ‘family’. Children don’t have the right to a mother and father – they have the right to be loved, protected and fostered in their growth. In the Gospel, Christ describes marriage as an unbreakable bond; he doesn’t even mention homo-sexuality. Out of honesty we must, then, admit there’s something we can’t answer. I would rather, then, that the Church didn’t take a stand on the topic, since it cannot give a final answer. Sure, it doesn’t make sense for the Church to marry people of the same sex. However, if the State decides to regulate an affective reality then the Church should let it do so, being merciful as dictated by the Gospel. I’m in favour of the social recognition of domestic partnerships, regardless of the couple’s sexual orientation. It’s awful to forbid a partner from know-ing the state of health of their love one from a doctor, or to deny them inheritance and every other right.» Cristina Simonelli

«Pope Francis constantly reminds us to be merciful. I don’t see

why people who commit massacres can repent but

divorcees can’t.»

«Life as a couple is very challenging and the Church should recognise the great merit of those who decide to start a family. In a world where everything is precarious –

from work to relationships – we can’t expect love and fami-lies to be any different. We cannot allow ourselves to judge,

let alone to exclude.»

THE THIRTEEN JESUSES A Contemporary Identikit From Hegel To Pope Francis

Renowned psychiatrist Vittorino Andreoli focuses on the figure that, more than any other, influenced his work as a scholar of the mind and as a writer. He explains why, even today, secular people cannot say they are not Christian.

That Jesus of Nazareth actually existed is accepted as a fact by most historians and bible scholars; and yet, strong scepticism has taken root in recent years. The sceptics range from mystics, who be-lieve the figure of Jesus belongs to myth, to conspiracy theorists; from those who saw him as an enlightened prophet to those who believe he is an invention of the old Church to control the masses.

So did Jesus really exist? And most importantly, who was he and what does he represent historically? What does he stand for today in the age of technology and modernity? A passionate scholar and psychiatrist, Vittorino Andreoli focuses once again on the figure that has always fascinated him the most and tackles some open issues through the works of thirteen great writers, thinkers and theologians of the 20th century – from Hegel’s moral Jesus to Pope Francis’ Jesus of mercy and the view given by Ratzinger.

Page after page, Andreoli’s work keeps the reader with bated breath as he reconstructs a story we sometimes wrongly believe we already know. He brilliantly sums up decades of historical and theo-logical debates of modernity and the early 21st century, leaving some questions unanswered while at the same time providing new and un-expected touchstones we can move from.

POPE FRANCIS’S ENEMIES Who wants to discredit him. Who wants to silence him. Who wants him dead

Who are the enemies of Bergoglio’s revolution? The current plots, intrigues and conspiracies to dethrone the pope who wants to change the physiognomy of Catholicism and throw stones of scandal against the strong powers of the globalized world.

Bergoglio knows. Sometimes he has talked about it in private. At others, he has implied it in public. Inside and outside the Catholic Church, there are obstacles, resistance, and conflicts. Serpents nest in curial milieus as well as in the international centres of power. There are pages of reports and entire books written about the internal op-ponents, but it is the external trench on the perimeter of the Vatican that heralds unpredictable perils.

Francesco has never denied this. Just before his voyage to Latin America, he openly said: «So many powers, over the course of history, have tried and are still trying to annihilate the Church!»

In a risky and unprecedented journalistic investigation, Nello Scavo sought the Pope’s enemies that «come from the end of the world». He met some in person, even though they were unaware. In some sacristies, along the refugee routes, in a fiscal paradise or in the inferno of a shantytown. Many are still hiding. They wear the bishop’s mitre or the mujahedeen’s typical headpiece, the fashionable ties of certain aggressive bankers or the linen shirts of rapacious oilmen. And then there are those who wear the muddy boots of arms and human traffickers. They are mercenaries of malicious gossip and insinuations and heads of state that do not practice what they preach.

«If I undergo an assassination attempt,» the Pope confided when he was going to the Philippines, «I ask only for the mercy of not being hurt. I am not brave. I am afraid of physical pain, but I have the defect of having a good dose of recklessness.»

THIS ECONOMY IS A KILLER

Daily financial newspapers, religious groups affiliated with the “Tea Party” and non-minority sections of the Catholic world accuse Bergoglio of anti-capitalistic positions.

What idea of the economy is Pope Francis thinking about as he is preparing an encyclical on “The poor and the creation”?

This pope “talks too much about the poor”. This South-American pope doesn’t understand much about the economy. This pope “come from the end of the world” demonizes capitalism.

Only a few phrases of the pope “against the killer economy and the dictatorship of finance” were enough to brand him as the “Marxist pope”.

That the columnists of financial dailies make certain comments or the exponents of movements like the American “Tea Party” is not surprising. Instead, what is much more surprising is that these com-ments were shared in many sectors of the Catholic world, who are forgetting the theological significance of loving for poor attested to by Jesus of Nazareth.

By doing so, the same sectors of a Catholic world end up dismiss-ing a tradition of the Fathers of the Church and the social teachings that, in years past, was certainly much more explosive and alternative in dealing with economic themes in respect to the weak voice of a certain contemporary Catholicism.

religious non fiction> SAVERIO GAETA & ANDREA TORNIELLI FATIMA – THE NEVER-ENDING PROPHECY

From Rue du Bac to La Salette, from Fátima to Medjugorje. A thread joins the Marian places and the modern prophecies from 1830 to today. The message is a repeated and heart-felt invitation to con-vert.

The countdown to the centennial of the apparition of the Virgin Mary to the young shepherds Francisco, Jacinta and Lúcia has al-ready begun on the Shrine’s official website. The actual date will be May 13th 2017, the celebration of Our Lady of Fátima. And it is likely that among the millions of pilgrims flocking to the Portuguese Shrine there will be Pope Francis, who has received several invitations to Por-tugal from the government, the Episcopal conference and the Leiria-Fátima diocese.

The Marian prophecies truly are God’s revelations for the modern times. In particular, we should carefully read into the events from Rue du Bac, Paris, in 1830 to Fátima and Medjugorje – a string of appari-tions to warn man against the perils of losing one’s faith and sense of morals. To help us survive these dire straits, the Virgin Mary has re-called humankind to conversion and she has done it with an urgency that suggests it is a sort of “final call” to go back to God.

May 13th 2017 marks the centennial of the apparition of Fátima. Pope Francis will make a pilgrimage to the Portuguese Shrine that draws millions of pilgrims every year.

LIGHT AND STORMMedjugorje and the world’s fate

There’s no denying it – the Virgin Mary has been speaking in Medjugorje for over thirty years. Her messages have foretold every-thing. The time has come – a dramatic time plagued by the dangers of an atomic war destined to be triggered by the new and opposing centres of power: Russia and America, rich and poor countries, the Middle East and the West.

Our planet is on the verge of self-destruction; the Apocalypse is looming. So what does the future hold for the world? Through the messages and the apparitions of Medjugorje, Father Livio Fanzaga answers the troubling questions of contemporary man, showing us the next steps to take on the historical path to salvation: the time of testing and of the Ten Secrets, the time of peace, the second coming of Christ and the end of the world.

FATHER LIVIO FANZAGA was born in Sforzatica, Dalmine, in 1940. He was ordained priest by the Scolopian Fathers in 1966. He graduated in theol-ogy at Pontificia Università Gregoriana (Rome) and then read Philosophy at Università Cattolica (Milan). After a short missionary experience in Senegal he began his early priesthood in Milan. Following a pilgrimage to Medjugorje he took over the management of Radio Maria, turning the small Como-based radio broadcaster into a worldwide network. He has published several best-sellers with Piemme, including Perché sono cristiano (with Saverio Gaeta, 2008), L’ora di Satana (with Diego Manetti, 2009), I segreti di Medjugorje (with Diego Manetti, 2010), Il ritorno di Cristo (with Diego Manetti, 2012), Il miracolo della conversione (2012) and Medjugorje rinnova la Chiesa (with Diego Manetti, 2013).
