This course shall provide an understanding of some of the elements of Roman civilization, literature and language, which have had an influence on Western civilization. Through imagination and experience, the student will consider a range of aesthetic, ethical, linguistic, political, religious and social issues. In this course, the study of Latin prose and verse literature, in its social and historical context, receives the same emphasis as the study of the Latin language. The content and focus should encourage students to:

- Read, understand, appreciate and make a personal response to some of the literature in the original language (verse and prose Literature texts will be set by CIE each year);

- Acquire some understanding of the civilization within which the literature studied was produced; - Develop a sensitive and analytical approach to language by seeing English in relation to a language with

different structure and by observing the influence of Latin on English; - Observe, abstract and analyze information, paying due regard to evidence, and - Develop a sympathetic awareness of the motives and attitudes of people of a different time and culture, while

bearing in mind Roman civilization’s legacy to the modern world; - Express, according to context, the meaning of Latin sentences written in Latin word order and the meaning of
