    1/3

I hope most of you are aware about the benefits of having a foreign intern during the second

year. This article would give you a brief outline of how you should go about in getting one.

Step 1 Resume This is the first and the foremost thing to start the process. Keep the

    following notes handy

Keep it simple Keep your resume simple but highly organized. Dont go in for some

flashy templates; they wont help you. Try to get a template which gives a

professional look and has content organized under a number of headings. Needless

to say, bullet points are written in CV, so refrain from writing a complete sentence.

Keep it precise Dont go on and write anything and everything that you have done

since your primary school days. Go in for important and relevant information only.

Give preference to your achievements during IIT tenure.

Headings In general, your CV should have contents organized under the following

    heads

Personal Information That includes your name, contact address, e-mail

address. Educational Background Provide tabular details of your B.Tech. Degree,

Secondary and Higher Secondary education, along with institutes name

indicating your CGPA, or percent marks. In a situation, if your Board marks

are less, you can omit them.

Objective This is generally a standard line or two, which students include in

their CV highlighting what they wish from the intern that they are applying for.

Scholastic Achievements Since, very few of you have done projects this

early in your IIT career, this is the most crucial portion of your CV. You can

mention about the scholarship, fellowships, academic awards (including IIT

Merit Certificate), Olympiad participation etc here. Additionally, you can alsomention about your JEE and/or AIEEE ranks. Briefly provide details about

these achievements indicating what your rank/ award/ scholarship means on

the national level. For example, regarding your JEE rank, you can give

approximate information about how many of them sat of the examination etc.

Do mention the year of award of scholarship or qualification in an

examination. Order them as per the significance of the award, for example,

Physics Olympiad International Gold Medal should be written above NTSE

Scholarship. You can format relevant information accordingly to highlight the

    importance, however, dont overdo it.

Related Courses Mention the related courses to the intern under this

header. You can also mention courses that are important for intern, but you

havent done yet, provided that youll be doing them before going for the

    summer intern.

Extra-Curricular Activities They wont be of much use in an application for a

research oriented summer intern. Mention only few main points in this header

which highlight your balanced personality. However, it would be good if you

could connect them to the work done in Technical Fests or in clubs like

Robotics. Such points would boast your selection probability.

Software/Languages Mention about the important computer languages you

know and about the software which would be useful for the intern that you are

    applying.

Mainly, these headings should be there in your resume. Additionally, you may include

information about any Project that you have done under a professor. Explain the project

nicely in bulleted points, highlighting the important technology that you used in the project.

Try writing around 3-4 points about the project, each highlighting a new aspect about the

    project.

You may also include information about any Position of Responsibility. Again, its not of

much use, however, its integration with Technical fests or organizations might help you.

Step 2 Cover Letter This is the letter that you write to the professor, as an application for

a summer intern. It contains your introduction, brief description of your achievements,

    projects and skills.

Introduce yourself first; mention your department and the current semester. Try

mentioning IIT Delhi as early as possible that makes a serious impact on whether

the professor will read it further or not.

Clearly specify the research interest that you are planning to do a project on. Thatresearch interest should be one of the research interests of the professor whom you

are applying. This ensures the seriousness of the application to the professor and

he/she feels that you are applying to him/her only.

If you have any project in your mind pertaining to the research interest, do mention

that. However, also mention that you are ready to carry-on with an existing project as

    well.

Do write about that you are highly interested and motivated towards research and

you wish to pursue the same in future as well. This is must for a foreign research

    intern.

Write briefly about your scholastic achievements and your key skills, so that theprofessor is interested in going through your Resume.

In case, you get any recommendation letter from any of our IIT professor, then you

can attach the same. This will strengthen your application. However, getting a

recommendation letter is a bit difficult in the first case.

Think of a different subject line, you can possibly use IIT Delhi there to segregate

    your application from others.

Step 3 Applying So when all the preparation is done, you are all set to send your

application to the professor. Keep the professors name field in the cover letter empty and

update it as per the professors name.

Try contacting your seniors about the list of professors, who are willing to accept

IITians for a summer intern. That might reduce your application time drastically.

If you cant get any such list, no need of worry, google top 200 or top 500 universities

of the world, visit their site then the department and then the faculty (or people as

some sites display). Youll get the professors list with e-mail ids there and link to their

personal pages. In the application process, give preference to Professor then to

Associate Professor and then to Assistant Professors. Try not to apply more than 3 or

4 professors from the same university.

When you get a reply which, unfortunately is not what you would want, dont get

disappointed. However, do send a reply to the professor, thanking him/her for the

    reply.
