• Definition of foreign folk dance-applies to those dances which come from countries other than Philippines Style.

• foreign dances are depict from the cultures of various countries - their political, economic, social, intellectual, geographical and religious nature of society. They are designed according to the culture of the country of origin, and they give the people a feeling of pride and unity

DIFFERENT KINDS OF FOREIGN DANCES • Square Dance - is a dance for four couples (eight

dancers) arranged in a square, with one couple on each side, facing the middle of the square. Square dances were first documented in 17th century England but were also quite common in France and throughout Europe.

• Folk Dance – The dances have various rhythms and forms in the different regions of the country. They are dances performed at social functions by people with little or no professional training, often to traditional music or music based on traditional music.

• Round Dance - There are two distinct dance categories called round dance. The specific dances belonging to the first of these categories are often considered to be ethnic, folk or country dances. The dances in the second category are more closely related to social ballroom dancing.

• Ballroom Dancing – Another term for ballroom dancing is social dancing. It shows beautiful movements in impressive forms. It includes waltz, tango, samba, and rumba.

• Modern Dance – is and art form which is different from other dances. Modern dance is a dance style that rejects many of the strict rules of classical ballet, focusing instead on the expression of inner feelings. Modern dance was created as a rebellion against classical ballet, emphasizing creativity in choreography and performance.

DANCE TERMSThere are many terms that a dancers needs to know in order to learn dances easily. Most of this are found in western folk dances.• 1. Allemande left - Each dancer faces its partner

and extends his left hand. Both move counter clockwise in a circle around each other and return to original position. Its also use as the dancers extend right hands to their partners

• 2. All Hands Round - all 8 people in the square join hands, while in 4 hands round call, 4 people or two couples join hands together

• 3. Balance forward - couples or dancers specified by the caller take two steps forward, take a bow, and then take two steps backward. It can also be done backward.

• 4. Bow, Honor, or Address - gentleman places right arm infront and left arm behind and bows to acknowledge the lady

• 5. Break - dancers who have joined hands release hold or drop hands.

• 6. Circle - designated couples joined and walk clockwise to the left if the instruction is circle left. Circle right is done counter clockwise. One step is taken to every count.

• 7. Curtsy- It is done in response to the bow of the men. It can be done with step side-ward right and pointing left foot to the right in the rear, bending the knee, head, and trunks slightly.

• 9. Grand Right and Left - all couples face partners. Join right hands and walk past each other passing right shoulders. As partners pass each other they extend the left hand to the next gentleman/lady.

• 10. Promenade- Partners are side by side, left shoulders toward the center, holding in skating position(right hands joined over the joined left hands) at waist level or varsovienne postion (boy’s right arm around back of girl, holding her right hand close and at level of her right shoulder, and his left hand hold her left hand in front or at the side) , they walk around in counter clockwise direction until they reach their home position.

• 11. Link Elbows- Hook left (Right) elbow with partner or any dancer.

• 12. Ladies Chain- Two couples face each other. The ladies walk forward to meet at the center. They give their right hands to each other and pass shoulders. The gentlemen takes the left hand of the opposite lady in his left hand, places his right hand on the lady’s waist and turns her around ones counter clockwise.

• 13. Opening Position- Partners hold in ballroom dancing, facing one direction, toward extended arms.

• 14. Set- It is a dance or unit formation. In square dance formation, a set is composed of four pairs standing on the side of a hollow square facing the center.

• 15. Opposites- Partners facing each other as couples 1 and 3, couples 2 and 4.

• 16. Corners- the girl at the left side of the boy and the boy at the right side of girl.

• 17. Home position- the couples original position in the set.

• 18. Visiting couples- the pairs moving around the set, performing the movement with the home couple or couples

• 19. Spin or whirl- to make fast turns executing small steps in place

• 20. Stamp- to bring down the foot forcibly and noisily in the floor with or without transfer.

Ballroom danceBallroom dance is a set of partner dances, which are enjoyed both socially and competitively around the world. Ballroom dancing is one of the most entertaining and elite styles of dancing. In the earlier days, ballroom dance was only for the privileged class of people, the socialites if you must. This style of dancing with a partner, originated in Germany, but is now a popular act followed in varied dance styles. Today, the popularity of ballroom dance is evident, given the innumerable shows and competitions worldwide that revere dance, in all its form.

International Standard Ballroom Dances• Tango: It definitely does take two to tango and this

dance also belongs to the American Style category. Like all ballroom dancers, the male has to lead the female partner. The choreography of this dance is what sets it apart from other styles, varying between the International Standard, and that which is American.

• Waltz: The waltz is danced to melodic, slow music and is an equally beautiful dance form. The waltz is a graceful form of dance, that requires fluidity and delicate movement. When danced by the International Standard norms, this dance is performed more closely towards each other as compared to the American Style.

• Foxtrot: Foxtrot, as a dance style, gives a dancer flexibility to combine slow and fast dance steps together. This social dance was named after the actor Harry Fox.

• Viennese Waltz: This style of ballroom dance is based on the original form of the waltz. There are many versions of this style of dance. It originated in the latter period of the 18th century.

• Quickstep: This style belongs to the International Style of Ballroom dancing which originated in the 1920s. This dance includes many steps with quick momentum. As seen in the move 'Dance With Me', the Foxtrot is both fun, and a dance that requires synchronicity.

• Cha-Cha-Cha: The cha-cha-cha simply called the cha-cha is a type of Latin-American dance which is very rhythmic in its appeal. This dance is energetic with slow movements as well.

• Rumba: This sensual dance is based on slow hip movement. Rumba belongs to the International Standard as well as the American style. This dance is known for the beauty of the steps that are coordinated on a slow rhythm.

• Samba: This beautiful and energetic dance also has many forms. The steps may differ in Samba that is danced as per the ballroom style and the traditional style samba choreography.

• Jive: This is yet another lively form of ballroom dance. This dance is also amongst the five dances that belong to the Latin American dance styles. Seen as a dance style that had taken the 30s and 40s (dancers moved mostly to jazz music) to perfect and pass on years later, still keeping it just as upbeat like it were back in the day.

• Paso Doble: This lively dance is also an International Latin dance style with less emphasis on hip movement. The basic structure of this Latin dance is based on the sounds and the movements used in Spanish bullfights.

TANGO

History

• Tango is a dance that has influences from European and African culture. Dances from the candombe ceremonies (a cultural manifestation Originated from the arrival of slaves from Africa) of former slave peoples helped shape the modern day Tango. The dance originated in lower-class districts of Buenos Aires and Montevideo. The music derived from the fusion of various forms of music from Europe. The word "tango" seems to have first been used in connection with the dance in the 1890s

• Health benefit: It has also been suggested that tango makes people feel more relaxed, sexier, and less depressed, and to increase testosterone levels
