Hartland/Lakeside Jt. No. 3 School District Issue #4 August 2015 Super Reader Pep Rally With Hometown Heroes HARTLAND/LAKESIDE Forefront Curriculum and Technology Transforming Education With Vivid & Engaging Learning Experiences It has been an exciting year in the Hartland/Lakeside schools. The implementation of our new balanced literacy program has given us the opportunity to watch our students grow as readers. Our work with reading begins with a deep commitment to giving all students large chunks of time to become deeply engaged in reading books—ones of their own choosing, when possible, and always ones that they can read with fluency, accuracy and comprehension. It is common to walk through our halls and see students in 5K – 5 th grade fully engaged in the books they are reading for at least 30 to 40 minutes daily. The enthusiasm for reading and talking about books is contagious within our schools. That enthusiasm for reading is now spreading into the summer months. We want to help our families see the benefit of making reading a daily habit especially during the summer. Summer months can be jammed packed with activities and vacations leaving little time for reading. Data confirms that in order for students to progress as readers, they must have abundant time to read. But, when students don’t read over the summer the “summer slide” can set in, causing students to LOSE up to two months of reading gains. “… I’m so excited for what your district is doing with Promethean. You are a leading example of what technology has to offer for this generation of kids and education. Your commitment and dedication to them shows … I look forward to continuing your growth with technology and showing others what you are doing…” Meagan from Promethean, Inc. Smartboards are old technology. The 21 st century classroom at Hartland/Lakeside is extremely different from 15 years ago. Student learning is more interactive with Internet resources allowing for more enriched and extended learning. Hartland/Lakeside’s fiber optics and student and teacher utilization of iPads, Macbooks, Chromebooks, and our Interactive ActivPanel Promethean Boards and ActivTables allow students to explore information in more detail with vivid video and interactive technology for real time learning. Our district has received several awards and recognition, not for having technology, but for how it is used and applied to student learning and achievement.

Hartland/Lakeside   believes   in   offering   choices   in   learning  environments   for   our   students   and   families.     Our   three  charter   schools   have   offered   unique   opportunities   for  students  and  have  been  a  good  option  in  meeting  student  learning   styles.     At   the   end   of   the   2014-‐2015   school   year,  the   five-‐year   contract   for   two   of   our   charter   schools,  Hartland  School  of  Community  Learning  and  LIFE,  expired.        We   will   continue   to   offer   Hartland   School   of   Community  Learning  and  LIFE  as  an  educational  option.    The  difference  is  that  they  will  be  titled  as  a  “magnet  school”  rather  than  a  charter.    The  magnet  schools  will  not  have  a  governance  council,   but   instead   the   school   board  will   have   oversight  pertaining   to   curricular   decisions   and   expectations.    We   are   thrilled   that   the   magnet   schools   will   continue   to  offer  exciting  learning  experiences  for  our  children.    More  information  will  be  presented  at   the  meet  and  greets  and  during  upcoming  curricular  informational  meetings.

Dave  Dean  and  Sergeant  Dan   Neumer   attended  the  pep  rally  at  North  to  help   students  understand  that  reading  is   a   superpower.     There  were   also   surprise  appearances   by  Arrowhead   High   School  athletes   Jenna   Stefan,  Ben   Breadeson   and   Johnny   Duranso.     Students   at  each  of   the   schools   set   an   individual  goal   to   try   to  read  a  total  of  1000  minutes  this  summer.  They  had  the   opportunity   to   check   out   up   to   10   books   from  the  school  library  to  take  home  for  summer  reading.  Armed  with   either   their   superhero   or   camouflaged  book   bags   filled   with   books,   our   super   readers

headed   off   to   summer   ready   to  battle   summer   reading   loss.  Students  had  opportunities  to  check  out  books  twice  during  the  summer.  During  the  Super  Reading  Boot  Camp  and   the   Meet   our   Community  Superheroes.   The   hope   is   that

students   will   return   this   fall   with   their   reading  powers  activated  for  another  great  year  of  learning!

Students   that   find  time   to   read   for   at  least   20   minutes   a  day   four   times   a  week   over   the  summer  can  actually  GAIN   at   least   a  month   of   reading  growth.    We  want  to  eliminate   summer  reading   loss.     We  know   that   the   best  way   our   students  can   maintain   their  reading   gains   over

the   summer   is   to   have   access   to   lots   of   books   and  plenty   of   time   for   reading.     To   support   our   readers,  Hartland   North   and   HFALA   kicked   the  summer   off   with   a   Super   Reader   Pep  Rally   and   Hartland   South   and   HSCL  kicked   the   summer   off   with   a  Hometown   Heroes   Are   Readers   Pep  Rally.     Both   rallies   encouraged   our  students   to   set   reading   goals   for   the  summer   and   send   their   reading   skills   “UP,   UP,   and  AWAY!”     Two   special   hometown   heroes,   interim  Chief

Research  supports  that  the  single  most  important  school  related  factor  in  student  achievement  is  the  knowledge  base  of  the  teacher.  The  Hartland/Lakeside  School  District  understands  the  importance  of  a  highly  trained  staff  and  invests  in  the  ongoing  professional  development  of  teachers  in  multiple  ways:

• This  summer,  professional  developers  from  Columbia  University  came  to  Hartland  to  work  with  our  teachers  during  a  weeklong  Literacy  Institute.  Throughout  the  week  our  teachers  learned  how  to  design  instruction  to  meet  the  needs  of  all  learners.

• During  the  course  of  the  school  year,  teachers  can  count  on  the  support  of  a  literacy  coach  in  their  classroom  to  model  instruction  and  provide  feedback  on  their  practice.

• Monthly  Early  Release  Days  are  utilized  to  provide  teachers  ongoing  professional  development.  • Weekly  grade  level  team  meetings  provide  teachers  collaborative  time  to  analyze  data,  examine

student  work,  and  plan  instruction.  As  our  teachers  continue  to  develop  their  expertise  in  literacy  instruction,  our  student  achievement  continues  to  grow!

“Keeping Your Kids Safe” Internet Safety Presentation

Detective   Paula   Hoffa   has   worked   for   the   Village   of   Hartland   Police  Department  for  nearly  nine  years.    Five  of  those  years  were  spent  working  part-‐time  with   the  Milwaukee  FBI  on  their  Child  Exploitation  Task  Force,  working   to   investigate   crimes   against   children,   primarily   child  pornography   investigations.     Detective     Hoffa   also   is   part   of   the  nationwide  Internet  Crimes  Against  Children  (ICAC)  Task  Force.    Detective  Hoffa  has  extensive  training  and  experience  in  sensitive  crimes  and  is  also  a   trained   forensic   interviewer   of  children.    One  of  Detective  Hoffa’s  goals  is   to  educate  parents   and   the   public   on  the   importance   of   Internet   safety   in  every   home.       We   encourage   you   to  attend.    The  presentation  will  be  on  Tuesday,  September  15th,  6:00  p.m.  at  North  Shore  Middle  School  Presentation  Room.    This  presentation   is   for  adults  only.      The  content  of  the  presentation  is  not  appropriate  for  children.

Save the Date! Super Saturday Story Hour will restart on September 19th. The Hartland/ Lakeside School District will once again continue its partnership with the Hartland Public Library to host Super Saturday Story Hour for children ages 3-5 on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month. The goal of the program is to provide early literacy skills to our youngest community members!

Thoughts on Coordinating Hartland’s Hometown Celebration We   asked   Chris   Oestreich   to   share   her   thoughts   on  coordinating   the   Hartland   Hometown   Celebration  parade.    As   parade   coordinator   for   the  past  5   years,   I  have   been  privileged   to   be   part   of   a   wonderful   team.    Hartland   /  Lakeside  has  provided  my  services  to  join  with  the  Village

of  Hartland  to   carry   on   a   100+   year   tradition.     My   favorite   part   of   the  parade   day   is   driving   the   parade   route   early   morning   and   see   the  abundance  of  chairs,  blankets,  and  ropes  tied  off  already  marking  a  saved  spot   for  parade  viewers.  The  parade   is   just  a  great  day   to   see  all   ages   in  the  community  come  together  and  celebrate...  together.

This year’s float “The Thinks You Can Think” was created by Mrs. Julie Debelack along with students, parents, and staff. A special

thank you to all for sharing your school pride! Hartland North will continue to host a weekly community playgroup. Parents and children ages 2 – 4 years old, gather to play with current friends as well as meeting some new ones. We also have a lending library you’ll definitely not want to miss! The playgroup meets weekly on Fridays from 9-10 a.m. Stop by Hartland North on Friday mornings to see what all of the excitement is all about!!
