TTTT iming was everything for

our record setting, 30th

annual car show. What a

day, with rain in the forecast

most of the week, the rain held

off until Sunday night.

After two years of a

downturn in attendance at our

show, due mostly to heat and

rain, we broke our previous re-

cord of 286 entrees with a total

of 290 this year.

One of our goals is to

have a car in every class which

we did although one car was

parked in the wrong class. As

with any show, the larger atten-

dance creates more problems

but those are problems we love

to have. As usual the FCA

classes brought out many out-

standing cars.

Special thanks go

out to Dave Sinclair Ford and all

of our class sponsors who make

this show possible.

The success of the show

takes so many people to accom-

plish. We normally name our

members who do so much but I

always seem to leave someone

out but from the show chairman

to what may seem like smallest

job at the show, we couldn’t do

it without you. Great job every-

one.

AAAA big show and a large park add up to a lot of walking. Our show chairman, Jim Biermann, noted

that his step counter logged nearly 20,000 steps at our show. I’m not sure how many miles that makes, but your editors legs felt like 20 miles. Our Saturday night pre-show BBQ has become a tradition. In the past, we used to stuff goodie bags on that night. Now it’s just a chance to enjoy friends and make plans for the big day to follow . For the first time in many years, maybe ever, we had a real AC Cobra, a 1964. Our 50-50 raffle raised $718 that profited $359 for our toy drive. Great job Vern Anderson and David Smith and those sellers who walked the park. Donna Layton outdid herself this year with our Cardinal basket that included a voucher for 2 Cardinal tick-ets. Thanks to those who donated items and to Donna for all of her work. It profited $201 for The BackStoppers. Always supporters of our show, the Mustang Club of St. Louis brought 25 Mustangs to our show. They did win the club participation again, and again donated it to our BackStoppers fund. Cindy Ahrens noted: We had 163 ballots that were turned in. Club members entered approximately 54 cars and could not vote. Around 73 ballots not turned in (some of these were turned in, but not completely filled out). Some of these are people who paid, but did not regis-ter, and didn't pick up ballot. Although we had 290 regis-tered entrees, we collected money for 294 cars. The “Best of Show” trophies are always a wonder. You would think that one car would get most of the votes, but as always, the votes are wide spread and the winning car usually does not have very many votes. It appears that some people just vote for their own car or truck. Last year, with only 118 entrees, class MM10 only had two cars. This year with 290 entrees, we still only had two cars in that class. Oddly enough, they were the same two cars and finished in the same place as 1st and 2nd. We again had a “guess the attendance” pool which was won by Jack Greiwe who had the only correct guess. The other half of the pot went to our toy drive. The FCA classes did well as usual with 28 en-trees. We thank Harold Callery and George Adams with their help with the Fairlanes. Lou Bewig won the $100 grand attendance prize and donated back to our BackStoppers fund. Thanks Lou. This year we went back to trophies instead of plaques because we found a trophy that we really liked. Dan Kelly put a lot of work into this. Our supplier noted that we had the first show with these trophies that he had

sold. The big turnout meant lots of concession sales. We sold out of hamburgers, cheese, and chips. As always, our concessions are a major part of the success of the show. Great job Sharon Apollo and her crew. This was the 27th year that our show has been held at J.S. MacDonnell Park. You couldn’t ask for a nicer location for a car show. Special thanks to Ron Sutton and EPC for donat-ing a refurbished laptop for a drawing at our show. This years attendance total was more than the last two years combined. Both of those years were affected by the weather. Our smallest turnout of registered cars was in 1998 when it rained all day. We had 78 cars and trucks that fateful day. To have such a large show and have the ballot totals ready by 3:45 pm was amazing. Great job Cindy Ahrens and crew. None of this would be possible without the spon-sorship of Dave Sinclair Ford and all of our class spon-sors. We thank Ron Schodroski for his work with Sinclair. The financial report on the show will be available at our September membership meeting. We do know that it was a success.

Our weekend started on the Friday with an interview on Fox 2 to promote our show. They only wanted 6 cars but word got out and we ended up with 12 cars, but it worked out well and made a great shot for the interview. Our spokesmen were Jim Biermann and Jerry Grimmer who represented our club well. It’s hard to tell how much effect this had on our show but it sure didn’t hurt.

OOOO n a beautiful August 6th Saturday morning, members of our club and 19 cars and trucks headed north, past the corn fields and the vast farm lands of St. Charles County to Smartt Field, home of the Commemora-

tive Air Force, to tour their facilities. Our club had been there twice before but there were many were changes with more to come. We were able to view the North American B-25 Mitchell, the TBM Avenger, and the U.S. Army L-3E “Grasshopper”. They have one of the 4 remaining wood hangers from WWII. The CAF relies on donations for the upkeep on the aircraft and our treasury do-nated $100 and our members donated another $155. We then headed to the Trailhead restaurant on historic South Main Street in St. Charles for lunch. A great day with great weather made for another successful club event. We thank Dan Kelly for his work on our tour.

September 2016 Page 6

LLLL ots of humidity greeted our crew at the monthly cruise at JJ’s of O’Fallon held on August 28th. This day our club was the host club and did our job well as we had 33 cars and trucks

in attendance. Some of our members received JJ’s gift certificates which were used for lunch. Lunch proved to be a good way of get-ting out of the heat and humidity. We thank Dan Kelly for setting up

this event and all of those who were there to help support our club.

TTTT o appreciate their years of support, a plaque was pre-sented to Dave Sinclair

Ford for our 2016 car show, our most successful car show ever. Shown are Jim Goodrich, Syl Biermann presenting the plaque to Dave Sinclair III. Others repre-senting our club were Paula Goodrich, Jim Biermann, Dan Kelly, and Josh Johnson. SSSS

ince our spring tour of the Warm Springs Ranch was a sellout, we purchased another 20 tickets for those who missed out. For Au-gust 21st, the weather topped out around 80 degrees, which made

for a perfect day. After the tour, our crew headed to Columbia Missouri for a great lunch at Chedders. We do great tours and this one was no ex-ception.

Special thanks to those who helped “bail” me out of my injury that day. After a visit to a vascular surgeon, all is well. Thanks-Bob.

TTTT his month we welcome 8 new members. Mike and Linda Wehner reside in Fenton. They own a 1957 Thunderbird and 1966 Fairlane GTA. Mike was

sponsored by our old friend, George Adams. Rejoining is John Krzyzanowski. John and Patty live in Florissant and drive a 1989 Mustang GT. His sponsor was Bob Layton. Jim Mccaughan has joined. Jim owns a 1970 F-250. He lives in Florissant and was sponsored by Danny Bullion. Another new member is Rick K. Miller. Rick drives a 2001 Cobra and is a St. Charles resident. Also rejoining is Jack Garris. Jack and Jan live in Union, Missouri and they own a stable of cars including a 1969 Mach I with a lot of his-tory. Scott Ambacher has joined. Scott and Renee live in Maryland Heights and drive a 2005 Mustang GT. Another new member is Dave McLean. Dave and Bonnie reside in Lake St. Louis and own a 2015 Mustang. Last but not least, we welcome John J Walling who resides in St. Pe-ters. John drives a 1966 Fairlane GTA. Welcome to all of our new members.

WWWW e will start taking nominations for members to run for our 2017 board of directors. The elected will serve a two year term. Please contact Syl Bier-

mann if you are interested. Fords Unlimited members supported the Show-Me Stampede Mustang & All Ford Show at Pundmann Ford on Aug. 6 with 12 vehicles entered. Those that registered were, Bill Bauer, Brian Berger, Craig & Calley Brayton, Mark Carey, Bill Garlich, Steve Hendricks, Terry Koch, Bert Pennington, Steve Schneider, Jim Van Ness, Mike Valentine & John Wishart. Also seen wandering the show field were, Gary Burch, Barb & Steve Dennis, & Bart McNail. There were 125 vehicles in 26 classes. The Fords Unlimited members earned 11 awards in the judged classes, and, they collected the club participation award of $50. Bart McNail accepted the award, and donated it back to go the Toys for Tots charity. (Info supplied by Terry Koch)

The Rock-wood Summit High School band is ending the sum-mer on a high note. The band, which had its truck stolen in February, has their truck re-placed thanks to some goodwill from a local entrepreneur. The band set up a GoFundMe page to buy a new one. Dave Sinclair III found them a similar truck, and paid the costs not covered by the fund. Great job! Starting this month we will start collecting for our Christmas toy drive. The club’s half of the meeting’s 50-50 will also go to the toy drive.

In July, we passed the hat to raise funds for police officer, Michael Flamion who had been shot in the line of duty. With the success of the car show, we have now do-nated an additional $250 for that cause. Although not club events, Burt Pennington sent info on both the Show Off and Wright City Cars for Christ shows. Several of our members attended and we took home the club participation in both shows. It had been suggested that the club make the Rods on the River car show a club event, but unfortu-nately, the suggestion was made too late to be considered by our BOD. Many of our members plan to go anyway. The show will be held on September 17th. This is your 1st notice on dues. You dues will be due by January 1st. Although it may seem early, we give 5 months of notices and we still have members forget to re-new. Dues are still $20 and can be mailed to the address on the front of this newsletter. The 50-50 winner at our August meeting was Dave Baugh. Congrats!

AAAA lthough, not a club event, on September 1st, we will have the opportunity to drive our cars across the historic Route 66 Chain of Rocks bridge as part

of the Great America Pony Drive. We will meet at the Mo-tomart located on Riverview, just to the north of Hwy. 270 on your left. The cost is $10 per car. We will meet at 7:45 am. We will only be able to drive 2 cars at a time across the bridge. (kind of scary, isn’t it?) We will attend the Wheels in Motion Day at West-port Plaza on September 11th. This event is more of a display that raises funds for kids with cancer. We will meet at the Syberg’s on Dorsett at 9 am and leaving at 9:15 am. This is a club event for points. On September 18th, we will attend the Shriners Car Show held at the Moolah Center located at 12545 Fee Fee Road. 63146. Proceeds benefit Shriners Hospital for Children. We will meet at the Church located at Fee Fee and Bennington at 8:45 am and leaving at 9 am. This is also a club event for points.
