The Board of Education approved the bid from Mennonite Press, Inc., of Newton, Kansas, for the publishing of 999 Kansas Characters: Ad Astra, the first in a series of books highlighting important Kansas figures. The cost of publication, $36,412, is to be paid from Kansas Heritage Center funds. The Board authorized the Board Clerk to issue a purchase order and sign a contract subject to review by Board Counsel.

In addition to the Board of Education members, the Executive Session included Alan Cunningham, Superintendent of Schools; Susan Scherling, Executive Director of Human Resources; William Hammond, Executive Director of Business and Operations; Brad Ralph, Board Legal Counsel, and Garth Hermann with Gilmore Bell.

The Building Blocks Early Chlldhoo Grant has received funding through a grant awarded to Russell Child Development Center from th Kansas Children's Cabinet & Trust Fund to support early literacy in Southwest Kansas. A complete roof replacement for Beeson Elementary School was included. CURRENT CONSIDERATIONS: GLMV Architecture has presented a proposal of architectural services for the design, bid, and construction phase for complete roof replacements at Beeson Elementary, Linn Elementary, and Soule Elementary. FINANCIAL CONSIDERATIONS: The professional services of $78,760 and reimbursable expenses of $6,500 will be paid from the Capital Outlay Fund. STAFF RECOMMENDATION: The Board of Education is respectfully requested to approve the November 7, 2014 proposal for architectural services for complete roof replacements at Beeson Elementary, Linn Elementary, and Soule Elementary in the amount of $78,760, plus $6,500 reimbursable expenses, to be paid from the Capital Outlay Fund. Reviewed By: Administrative Cabinet BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The Board of Education requested proposals for firms to assist the school district planning to address future facilities needs. Five proposals were received, with the Board requesting additional presentations by two (2) of the firms submitting proposals. At a special meeting of the Board of Education on Tuesday, November 11, 2014, the DLR Groups and Patron Insight presented their respective proposals for leading the school district and community through a facilities needs assessment, planning process, and potentially a bond campaign for additional school facilities. CURRENT CONSIDERATIONS: Following the presentations on November 11, references were contacted, as well as conference calls held with the DLR Group to clarify and confirm some of the information shared during their presentation. Those clarifications and confirmations have been made to the satisfaction of district administration and its architect. Administration recommends that the Board of Education utilize the services of the DLR Group to lead the school district and community through a facilities needs assessment, planning process, and potentially am informational bond campaign for additional school facilities. FINANCIAL CONSIDERATIONS: The cost for these services will be included in the overall percentage of the engineering contract between DLR Group and GLMV Architects. That amount will ultimately be determined by the scope of the projects authorized by the Board and approved by the voters. STAFF RECOMMENDATION: The Board of Education is respectfully requested to approve the DLR Group as the firm to assist the school district in future facilities planning, pending acceptance of terms and conditions by GMLV Architects and review by Board Counsel.
