For more than 60 years, the Ford Motor Company Fund and Community

Service has worked to build vibrant communities through programs and

partnerships that improve the quality of life. The FCCP at UDM started in

2011.

Enhance student leadership skills development through practical experiences of serving those in need.

Broaden students’ classroom learning through direct community engagement.

Improve the capacity of community-based, human service organizations by creating partnerships between these organizations, Ford, and UDM.

Increase students’ awareness of service opportunities in the community and Ford Motor Company’s commitment to community engagement.

Assist faculty in identifying and using best practices in service-learning.

Physician Assistant students: Participate in urban garden development and educate staff at Detroit Rescue Mission about the benefits of a healthy diet. The student leader will be producing a documentary of this project. 

Law students: Provide legal advice to low-income immigrants to educate and empower the clients.   

UDM athletes: Develop and deliver a substance abuse prevention and pro-alternative program for students at Jalen Rose Leadership Academy. 

Freshman resident students: Plan the UDM Healthy Kids Camp that focuses on healthy living, nutrition, obesity, and community development for Detroit students.

Faculty

•FCCP grant will award 10 faculty members.

•Teach the granted class in the winter semester

•Oversee the student leader in the Service-Learning project.

Agency/CommunityA non-profit organization or a community group The agency or community group will be willing to work with UDM students.

Service RecipientsIndividuals in the community will be directly engaged with classroom students.UDM campuses are not included.

•Attend granted class in Winter semester

•Directly serve those in need in the community

Leader

•FCCP will award 10 student leaders.•Work closely with the faculty member on project proposal, implementation, evaluation, etc.

•In the Fall semester, student leaders will receive full tuition remission, if needed, for attending LEAD 4000, the FCCP leadership course (3 credits). LEAD 2000 is a prerequisite.

•All students will conduct community assessments and develop action plans.

•In Winter semester, all students coordinate the Service-Learning project, lead the granted class, and receive $1,500 stipend.

Note: A faculty member and a student leader can be paired-up voluntarily by themselves or with the help of the Institute.

The Institute for Leadership and Service will host the FCCP leadership course, oversee the Service-Learning projects ,and provide support and advice.

Submit joint proposal with faculty member by March 28, 2014

Work closely with the faculty member on project proposal, implementation, evaluation, etc.

Receive full tuition remission, if needed, for LEAD 4000
