EASTHAM Residents from Eastham and neighbouring towns gave NStar a

verbal spanking for its plan to use chemical herbicides to control foliage along

the Lower Capes miles of power line easements.

Close to 100 people gathered at a public hearing with NStar, held at Nauset

Regional High School Wednesday night, to voice their concerns. State officials

arranged for the hearing after word of the planned spraying rippled through the

community, alarming residents earlier this summer.

But citizens concerns aired at the hearing apparently carried no weight. Min-

utes after it ended, Jared Collins, grandson of the late Selectman Ken Collins,

asked an NStar representative what would happen next.

[The utilitys arborist, Chris Fallon], said they would start spray-

ing Monday, either in Wellfleet or Orleans, Collins said. Legally,

they dont have to tell us, and I find it completely appalling that

this most important piece of information was not even mentioned at

the meeting.

Mike Durand, a spokesman for NStar, confirmed to The Cape Codder Thursday

that the utility plans to start spraying the herbicides Monday, weather per-

mitting. He said they are under a deadline to get the foliage work done by

October, and only agreed to hold off for two months so that this hearing could

be held. Weve been clear we have a mandate to ensure electrical

service and we need to get sta rted on this.

Even though rightofway easements are privately owned, the utility is respon-

sible for their maintenance. The herbicides possible [ POSSIBLE MEANS THE

ENVIROMANIACS DONT HAVE A CLUE , AS USUAL ! ] contamination of wells and

unknown dangers to human and animal health [ AN UNKNOWN AND UNDEFINED

ENVIROMANIAC DANGER ! ] were among the residents chief concerns.

NStar representatives, along with state Sen. Robert OLeary, state Reps. SarahPeake and Cleon Turner, and Scott Soares, commissioner of the state Depart-

ment of Agricultural Resources, attended the hearing. After a presentation by

NStar, citizens and local officials had their say.

Eastham Selectwoman Aimee Eckman was applauded when she said, I think

spraying pesticides under the power lines in Eastham is taking a huge

step backward, noting that for years the utility had been doing mechanical

cutting.

Eckman noted that the pesticide industry continues to make claims

that the products are safe or nontoxic, butthese chemicals havethe potential to create serious problems affecting human health and

the environment.

She added, Since you are proposing to use pesticides within theboundaries of our town, I feel we, as a town, should be able to de-

cide if we will allow their use. And I, for one, would decide against

it, she said to much applause.

Dave Pike of Eastham said NStar manages two power lines on his property.

As a taxpayer, I think I should be able to manage my own property.

And as for spraying pesticides, I cant approve it unless you drink it

and come back tomorrow and say youre OK.

Donna Gemborys said she takes daily walks with her children and pets on the

easement right of way. I choose not to use pesticides on my yard be-

cause I dont want to have a little chemical here, a little chemical

there, and all of a sudden Ive got breast cancer or some other dis-

ease.

HAS THE RIGHT NOT TO USE ANYTHING THEY WANT. HOWEVER , WE ALL KNOW

THEIR THEIR TRUE OBJECTIVE . THEY WISH TO MALICIOUSLY IMPOSE THEIR ANTI

MODERNIST LIFESTYLE CHOICE ON EVERYBODY ELSE ! ]

She said if NStar sprays the right of way, I can tell you as a property

owner that the land values are going to be affected. People are not

going to want to buy there.

Collins, who had raised his hand to speak to no avail, shouted out in frustra-

tion, DDT was approved by the state at the time of its use.

Paul Cisilli of Wellfleet, whose property abuts the right of way, said, I think

the issue here is credibility, and whom do you believe. I do not

doubt the experts on the panel. This is the knowledge that they aregoing by now. But years ago we were told DDT was OK, and we were

told that Agent Orange was terrific and we know what Agent Orange

did. Weve been told that these herbicides are OK, so whom do we

believe now ?

THE MOST INFAMOUS HERBICIDE COMBINATION USED IN THE VIETNAM WAR WAS

HERBICIDE ORANGE, OTHERWISE KNOWN AS AGENT ORANGE. THIS PRODUCT CON-

TAINED A 50 : 50 MIXTURE OF NBUTYL ESTERS OF 2,4D AND 2,4,5T. HERBICIDE

ORANGE WAS NEVER A REGISTERED PRODUCT IN EITHER THE UNITED STATES OR

CANADA . HOWEVER , 2,4D IS CURRENTLY A REGISTERED HERBICIDE FOR THE

CONTROL OF BROADLEAVED WEEDS IN TURF . 2,4D IS ONE OF THE MOST HATED

INGREDIENTS BY ENVIRONMENTAL TERROR ORGANIZATIONS THAT CONSPIRE TO

PROHIBIT PEST CONTROL PRODUCTS .

THE CONTROVERSY ASSOCIATED WITH THE USE OF HERBICIDE ORANGE WAS ASSO-

CIATED WITH A CONTAMINANT IN THE 2,4,5T COMPONENT, AND NOT 2,4D. AT

THE TIME, 2,4,5T WAS CONTAMINATED WITH A DIOXIN NAMED TCDD. STUDIES

SHOWED THAT THIS DIOXIN , AND NOT NECESSARILY HERBICIDE ORANGE, IN-

CREASED THE RISK OF VARIOUS TYPES OF CANCER AND BIRTH DEFECTS . CONSE-

QUENTLY, HERBICIDE ORANGE WAS SUSPENDED FOR USE BY THE UNITED STATES

DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE. 2,4,5T WAS LATER ENTIRELY WITHDRAWN FROM THEMARKET.

S INCE THIS TIME, 2,4DENVIROMANIACS BEEN OFTEN ASSOCIATED WITH DIOXINS

AND CANCER BECAUSE OF HERBICIDE ORANGE. (S INCE 1983, 2,4D CAN BE CON-

SIDERED FREE OF DIOXINS . ) THE ENVIRONMENTAL TERROR MOVEMENT HAS AR-

GUED THAT THE HERBICIDEORANGE2,4D AFFAIR HAS PROVEN THAT THE GREEN

SPACE INDUSTRY USES DANGEROUS PRODUCTS LIKE 2,4D.

THE GREEN SPACE INDUSTRY CAN ARGUE BACK THAT 2,4D IS NOT HERBICIDE

ORANGE. ADDITIONALLY, 2,4D DOES NOT CONTAIN HARMFUL DIOXINS . THIS IS A

MYTH !

FURTHERMORE , IT CAN BE STATED THAT 2,4D DOES NOT CAUSE CANCER, WHICH

WAS THE CONCLUSION OF THE CANADIAN FEDERAL PES T MANAGEMENT REGULA-

TORY AGENCY OF HEALTH CANADA (P.M.R.A.) IN 2005, INDICATING THAT . . .

THE TOXICOLOGICAL DATABASE DOES NOT SUGGEST A CARCINOGENIC RISK . ]

He said he would like NStar to test his well, which is right on the power line,

before and after they spray itif this goes through over our objections.

David Hoerle of the Eastham Conservation Commission asked : Is NStar

willing to unequivocally state that minimal risk means no cancer ?

He got no reply.

[ COMMENTARY FROM AN INDEPENDENT PERSPECTIVE .

OF COURSE, TH E EN-VIROMANIACS WISH TO GIVE THE IMPRESSION THAT CHILDREN AND ADULTS ARE

BEING EXPOSED TO CANCERCAUSING AGENTS WHENEVER A PEST CONTROL PROD-

UCT IS USED .

THE SAME TACTICS WERE USED BY RACHEL CARSON AND HER STEPCHILDREN IN

TRYING TO RID THE WORLD OF DDT. ALLEGEDLY, LARGE NUMBERS OF BIRDS WERE

KILLED AFTER APPLICATIONS OF DDT. UNFORTUNATELY, THERE ARE NO VALID RE-

PORTS, OR EVEN PHOTOS FOR THAT MATTER , THAT SUPPORT THIS BIRD ALLEGATION .

AND , THERE ARE NO VALID REPORTS THAT CONFIRM PROBLEMS WITH CHILDREN.

OR ANYBODY ELSE FOR THAT MATTER . IT IS ALL SPECULATION .

BASED UPON THE SOUND SCIENCE OF EXPERTS IN THE DOMAIN OF PEST CONTROL

PRODUCTS , THE HEALTH OF THE PUBLIC MAY BE BETTER SERVED IF ALL THE RE-

SOURCES OF ENVIRONMENTAL TERROR GROUPS, WHICH IS CURRENTLY AND MALI-

CIOUSLY FOCUSED ON THE PROHIBITION OF LEGAL, SAFE, AND TOTALLY IRRE-

PLACEABLE PEST CONTROL PRODUCTS, WERE REDIRECTED TOWARDS IMPROVING

THE LIFESTYLE CHOICES OF THE POPULATION , SUCH AS DIET AND EXERCISE. THOSE

ARE WHERE THE TRUE ISSUES WITH CANCER OCCUR ! ]

Bernie Kaplan of Eastham said residents have been told there will be no migra-

tion of the pesticide to wells, yet there is a requirement that spraying be kept

50 feet away from them.

That means that we are not sure there would be no migration. Itseems to me were gambling. Even if this process meets all current

regulations, federal and state, what happens if those regulations,

over time, turn out to have been inadequate, [or were] developed

without a longterm test of the effect of toxicity and the possibility

of [damage]? Kaplan asked.

The one thing that isnt suggested, he said, but probably implied, is that it is

cheaper to spray than to mow. Fallon told him the costs of mowing and spray-

ing are about the same.

Eastham and the other affected towns could file home rule petitions to deny

the utility the right to spray, state Sen. OLeary suggested.

Scott Soares, commissioner of the state Department of Agricultural Resources,

said if people wanted to stop the spraying, they could.

If you want to be cautious, you dont do anything, he said to ap-

plause.

FORCE OF NATURE was launched for continuous transmission on the Internet on January 1st, 2009. It

is a series of enewsletters destined for the GREEN SPACE INDUSTRY, the ENVIRONMENTAL MOVEMENT,politicians, municipalities, and the media, nationwide across Canada, and parts of the United States.

FORCE OF NATURE is produced in two parts. First. The MEDIA REPORTitself thatreports on the cur-rent events affecting the future of the GREEN SPACE INDUSTRY. Second. INDEPENDENT PERSPECTIVE,

which is a running commentary, sometimes also of a more technical in nature.

FORCE OF NATURE is the brainchild of William H. Gathercole and his entourage. The opinions ex-

pressed in these enewsletters, even though from an INDEPENDENT PERSPECTIVE, may not reflect those

of everyone in the GREEN SPACE INDUSTRY, or Mr. Gathercoles many associates. Be warned ! Mr.Gathercole and his team may sometimes be very irreverent and fearless with these enewsletters.

William H. Gathercole holds a degree in Horticulture from the UNIVERSITY OF GUELPH, and another

pure and applied science degree from MCGILL UNIVERSITY. He has worked in virtually all aspects of

the GREEN SPACE INDUSTRY, including public affairs, personal safety, and environmental issues. Mr.Gathercole has been a consultant and instructor for decades. Mr. Gathercole has been following the

evolution ofENVIRONMENTAL TERRORISMfor over a quartercentury. His involvement in environmentalissues reached a fevered pitch in the 1990s, when he orchestrated, with others, legal action against un-ethical and excessive municipal regulations restricting the use of pest control products. ply a strong advocate FOR the GREEN SPACE INDUSTRY. However, this position has not precluded himfrom criticizing the industry itself. Nonetheless, his vast knowledge of our long journey with environ-
