Master SaiQuan Jamile Clark

SaiQuan, the son of Shavika V. Thompson and DeAngelo Clark, the brother of MyKaila S. Eure and Jameelah M. Simmons, and the grandson of Trustee Imn and Trusteette Joycetine Burton, is an 11th grade student at I. C. Norcom High School in Ports-mouth. SaiQuan has been an honor student and is a member of the

Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA). He loves all sports and is player #34 on this year’s I. C. Norcom Boys Basketball State

Championship Team (three straight titles). On April 26, 2016, a City of Portsmouth Proclamation was issued for the “I. C. Norcom 15 Player Team with a cumulative GPA of 3.1.” Mayor Kenneth Wright proclaiming April 25, 2016 through May 1, 2016 as the “I.C. Norcom High School Boys Basketball State Championship Celebration Days”. Congratulations to SaiQuan, his fellow teammates, and coaches on their 29-1 record.

SaiQuan also plays on the AAU-Team Loaded which keeps him very busy and out of trouble. SaiQuan was bestowed the honor of “Mr. Junior” for the 2015 Homecoming Court. He plans to attend college but has not decided on which one yet.

SaiQuan has a lot of love and suppor t from his family who are also members of New First Baptist Church (Taylorsville): Sister Lillie B. Williams, Deaconess Frances Williams, Sisters Kathy Burton-Bell, Vanessa Hinton, Cynthia Harrison, Tateona and Tyera Thompson, and Shaniqua Spratley, and the late Sister Ora W. Burton (in our hearts always).

On September 25, 2011, SaiQuan gave his life to the Lord as a candidate for Baptism at New First Baptist Church (Taylorsville). When he is able, SaiQuan loves participating with the youth ministry and singing with the Steelettes Youth Choir. His favorite scripture is John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoso-ever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” and his favorite Christian songs “Amazing Grace” and “Emmanuel” (especially when the Steelettes are singing). He has been a cast member in several plays written by his Aunt Vanessa.

We pray the Lord will continue to bless SaiQuan as he moves forward in his growth in the Lord and in his future endeavors. Congratulations to Master SaiQuan J. Clark our Youth in the Spotlight. We pray you always put God first in your life and letting Him be your guide.

Sister Ellen W. Kearney

Sister Ellen W. Kearney (74 years of age) became a member of New First Baptist Church (Taylorsville) under the leadership of the late Rev. Dr. T. Melvin Steele and has been a member for over 45 years. On May 23rd, if it’s God’s will, she looks forward to celebrating her 75th birthday.

Sister Kearney was marr ied to the late Louis Kearney and the parents of one son, Trustee Michael E. Kearney, Sr. and spouse, Trusteette

Cheryl Kearney. She is a loving grandmother of three (Umiake Dean, Lakeisha K. Ford, and Michael E. Kearney, Jr.) and great grandmother of five. Her other family mem-bers at New First Baptist Church (Taylorsville) includes her sister, Gwendolyn Lynch; her nephew, Rev. Pearlie C. Simmons; and her honorary grandchildren (James E. Faircloth III, Jordan E. Faircloth, and Lakia Robertson). She is also the sister of Evangelist Carolyn V. Williams and the late Manervia R. Simmons.

Sister Kearney retired as a Cosmetologist and Seamstress. She enjoys reading, cook-ing, sewing, walking, doing word search puzzles and helping others in need. Within her community, she worked for the Democratic Party.

Sister Kearney has been involved with church ministry the entire time she has been a member. From the beginning, she worked with the Tutorial Ministry, Hospitality Ministry, and the former Children’s Out Reach Division. She regularly attends Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, “High Noon” and Mid-week Prayer Service and Bible Study, sings with the Concert Choir, Helping Hands Ministry, participates in the Black History Programs, and a member of the former 5-W Club (We Will Work Won’t We). She is always there to lend a hand as needed; cooking “Bar-B-Que and Cornbread” for special events and making hats and neckties. Sister Kearney participates with the Nursing Home Fellowship Outreach spreading God’s love and encouraging others.

What Sister Kearney loves about New First Baptist Church (Taylorsville): ‘From my first day, the people of the church were warm, friendly, and had so much love. I enjoy the worship service and the fellowship.” Her favorite scripture is Psalm 122:1, “I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the LORD” and her favorite Christian song, “So Good”.

With over 45 years of working for the Lord, Sister Kearney is not stopping now. Continuing to show how the Lord is blessing and using her to reach out to others.

Thank you, Sister Kearney, for your many years of service to this church family.

“Congratulations to our Senior in the Spotlight, Sister Ellen W. Kearney.”

HEALTH AND WELLNESS MINISTRY

“Monthly Health Tip”

May 2016

10 Signs You May Have Kidney Disease

Did you know that African Americans are 3 times more likely to experience kidney failure?

Kidneys re-move wastes from the bloodstream. When the kidneys fail, the build-up of wastes in your blood can cause severe itching.

Symptom 5: Metallic Taste in Mouth/Ammonia Breath — A build-up of wastes in the blood (called uremia) can make food taste different and cause bad breath.

Symptom 6: Nausea and Vomiting A severe build-up of wastes in the blood (uremia) can also cause nausea and vomiting. Lead to weight loss.

Symptom 7: Shortness of Breath Extra fluid in the body can build up in the lungs and anemia (a shortage of oxygen-carrying red blood cells) can leave your body oxygen-starved and short of breath.

Symptom 8: Feeling Cold — Anemia can make you feel cold all the time, even in a warm room

Symptom 9: Dizziness and Trouble Concen-trating — Anemia related to kidney failure means that your brain is not getting enough oxygen. This can lead to memory problems, trouble with concentration, and dizziness.

Symptom 10: Leg/Flank Pain The most common causes of CKD do

not cause any pain. Some people with kidney problems may have pain in the upper back (where the kidneys are) or on the same side as the affected kidney.
