2. 2. BUT...WHY DO WE CELEBRATE THIS DAY??? Every February we celebrate Valentines Day by giving flowers, candy and cards to those we love. We do this in honor of Saint Valentine. You may be wondering, "Who is St. Valentine"?
3. 3. DID YOU KNOW????Valentine was a priest who served during third centuryRome. There was an Emperor at that time by the nameof Claudius II.
4. 4. Claudius wanted a strong army, but many men did notwant to be soldiers. Claudius thought the men wantedto stay home to be with their wives and childreninstead of leaving to fight wars. So he decided tocancel all marriages! No one in all of Rome could getmarried.
5. 5. BUT WHAT HAPPENED NEXT???Valentine, who was a priest, believed that peopleneeded to get married. So he secretly and illegallymarried couples anyway! He performed the weddings insecret places, so the Roman soldiers would not find out.
6. 6. BUT...But they did find out. Valentine was arrested and sent to prison until he could be executed. While he wasin prison, he sent out letters to his friends and askedto be prayed for by writing Remember your Valentine.
