GEOMORPHOLOGY AND ENVIRONMENTAL

SUSTAINABILITY

Geomorphology and Environmental Sustainability attracts Global

Research Communities to work in various dimensions of changes in

methodological bases of Geomorphological studies. Environmental

sustainability in different Ecosystems and landform units at different

levels of unit of study. The role of geomorphologists is to monitor the

processes of landform change dynamics and to describe the complexities

of landform units in different ecosystems. In recent decades, from

perspective of issues and challenges of Impact of climate change, global

warming and occurrences of extreme weather events have diverted the

attention of the Earth Scientists, Climatologists, Environmentalists,

Policy Makers and Researches to enquire causes and consequences and

impact of global changes in environmental sustainability. The main task

of field geomorphologists is to observe the impact of changes in

lithospheric environment because it includes all types of ecosystems like

plain ecosystem, mountain ecosystem, plateau ecosystem, pedogenic

environment, river environment and lake environment. There is direct

relationship with lithospheric environment and also with components of

social environment and economic environment. In this regard, ensuring

environmental sustainability and full case of environmental monitoring

is a prime task and concern of global research community because

sustainable environment may assure the optimum level of resources for

the future generations. Monitoring and mapping of the global changes of

landforms in their spatial units and exploring the causes and the

consequences of drivers of change in landforms and its impact on

environmental sustainability needs serious enquiry and attention of

global earth scientists and research communities in order to save the

Earth.

ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY OF ALLAHABAD

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT OF GEOGRAPHY

The Department of Geography was founded in 1937 through the efforts

of Prof. R. N. Dubey, who later became the first Professor & Head of the

Department. Undergraduate study started immediately and the Post-

Graduate study started in the year 1946. There are two well recognized

societies i.e. Allahabad Geographical Society & Indian Institute of

Geomorphologists associated with the department. The major thrust area

of the researches are Geomorphology, Regional Development Studies

and Planning, Urban Environment, Population Dynamics, Sustainable

Development, Agricultural Geography, Disaster Management, Arid

Land Studies, Application of Remote Sensing & GIS in Natural

Resources Mapping and Planning.

THE INDIAN INSTITUTE OF GEOMORPHOLOGISTS (IGI)

The idea of forming an association was conceived by Professor Savindra

Singh, former Head of the Department of Geography, University of

Allahabad. During International Conference on Geomorphology and

Environment which was held during 17 to 21 January, 1987. IGI was

established on 19 January, 1987.



The main objectives of the IGI are:

• To bring all the Earth Scientists dealing with Geomorphology and

allied disciplines on a common platform under the banner of IGI.

• To hold annual conferences in different places of the country.

• To publish research journals.

• To coordinate researches being carried out on geomorphology and

allied disciplines in different universities and laboratories in the

country.

• To encourage young research scholars doing researches in

geomorphology by giving awards and certificates.

• To give more emphasis on researches related to human societies

and its welfare such as environmental geomorphology, urban

geomorphology, hazards and disasters etc.
