Verrazano Honors at the College of Staten Island

Greetings from the Verrazano Honors Program at the College of Staten Island!

Verrazano Honors is what an ideal college experience should look like. Our students take honors

classes with other talented, motivated students; engage in the campus and New York City

community through community service and Verrazano-organized extracurricular activities; conduct

independent research and other substantive scholarly activities; and get individualized advising on

academics and careers.

Our students thrive. For example:

• Our current Jeanette K. Watson Scholar returned from a paid internship in Rwanda, where she explored the public health care system post-genocide. Another recent graduate is completing his second Fulbright fellowship in education just outside Mexico City. Our students are going places!

• Our recent graduates are in medical, dental, PA, OT, and PT schools; have full-time positions in engineering, finance, education, and in the non-profit world, and others are pursuing graduate degrees.

• Almost 20% of last year's graduating class studied abroad in places like Japan, Italy, Ireland France, Morocco, among others, partially funded with Verrazano study abroad scholarships.

• 100% of our students complete mentored research, and some start as early as their first semester of their freshman year.

To read more about the amazing things Verrazano students are doing, visit our blog, the Verrazano

Voyager, at www.theverrazanovoyager.blogspot.com .

There is still time to apply for Fall 2020. We will begin reviewing applications on February 1, and

will continue to accept applications through mid-April. Please note that students can be in BOTH

Verrazano Honors and ASAP, the Teacher Honors Academy, SEEK, and a Division II athlete! Note

on a change to our application: instead of two essays with Verrazano-specific topics, we have

changed it to one essay on a topic of their choice-we figure they have written scads of essays for

college-why make them do two more? Students will still need to apply to CSI using the CUNY

application or the Common App, and the Verrazano supplemental

application: https://webdocs.csi.cuny.edu/VZ/ .

We encourage all enthusiastic, high-achieving students to apply to Verrazano. Last year's class

had a 92 high school average, a composite score of 1100 on the SAT (Evidence-Based Reading

and Writing + Math), and were involved in leadership, community service, and extracurricular

activities. Read the included one-page handout for more info!

#InTheLoop | Do Good, Feel Great! Volunteer Fair to Unite Nonprofits with Talent

Calling all volunteers AND all nonprofits that need them!

The Church-in-the-Gardens will host a Volunteer Fair at its Community House in Forest Hills

on Sunday, Feb. 23, from noon to 3 pm.

Organized by the 106-year-old church's World Service Committee, the event will be an exciting

recruitment event, enabling aspiring volunteers to meet and chat with representatives from regional

nonprofit organizations. Via quick interviews in a low-key atmosphere, the organizations and the

interested volunteers will be able to explore common interests and possible partnerships.

Admission is free for all, and agencies get display tables. There are some door prizes, too.

The participating nonprofits have a variety of missions, including the following: homeless and

hungry; elderly; sick and impaired; at-risk children; environment; arts; and the general Queens

community.

"We are really excited about this," said World Service Committee member Hal Christensen. "There

are a great many people in Queens-retirees, students, families-who would love to donate their time

and skills to a great cause. This event will be the perfect way for them to learn about opportunities

right here in Queens and about service-minded organizations that would love to have their help."

Located at 15 Borage Place in Forest Hills, The Church-in-the-Gardens Community House is

walking distance from the 71st-Continental subway station for the E, F, and R lines and the Long

Island Rail Road's Forest Hills stop. The host venue will provide temporary permits for on-street

parking to those who drive.

For more information and to donate items for door prizes, send an email

to [email protected] with "Volunteer Fair" in the subject. Interested nonprofits are asked

to click here and complete a form and send an email to [email protected].

The NYPD Community Center is offering a *FREE*, 8-week, SAT Prep Class for students in

grades 10 & 11. The program will run on Saturdays from February 8th through March 29th. As

SAT School Day approaches, this is a great resource for students to take advantage of. Students

who would like to sign up should reach out to Randy Millard, Assistant Program Director at (917)

617-3621 or [email protected].
