Dear Students,

April is Autism Awareness month! As you know, we have many students in our school with Autism, but do we really know what this means? This month we are going to learn as much as we can about our friends & what makes them who they are!

Why?

Learning about Autism Awareness, especially in April, is important, just like Breast Cancer Awareness was in October. It is important for us to learn as much as we can about different things in today’s world that affect many people’s daily lives. Educating ourselves about specific topics as best we can, helps to make us a more accepting and understanding member of society.

What is Autism?

Our friends with Autism may act differently in certain situations. Some examples are: doing the same thing over and over again (saying a word), move body parts (arms/legs) in certain ways, or difficulties adjusting to change (substitute teachers, changes to daily schedules, etc.) These things, may seem odd, but they help our friends stay focused and calm.
