AVOID HOME REPAIR SCAMS THIS SPRING The start of spring often brings out a desire to spruce up your home and garden. Unfortunately, it also brings out crooks and scammers looking to take advantage of enthusiastic homeowners.

Here are a few tips for avoiding scams: • Get recommendations. Avoid contractors who contact you unsolicited or say they’re doing

other work in your neighborhood.

• See what others are saying. Before you hire someone, check his or her work history with your state consumer protection agency and the Better Business Bureau. Google the company or individual name with the words “reviews” and “complaints.”

• Check credentials. Verify that the contractor has the required license or registration for your state.

• Know your rights. Some states give consumers three days or so to cancel home-improvement contracts. Under federal law you have three days or cancel most contracts that are signed in your home or outside the contractor’s place of business.

• Get it in writing. Ask for a written contract and get all warranties in writing, too.

KEEP US UP-TO-DATEIf you’ve moved, changed your email address or cancelled your landline in favor of your cell phone, be sure to let us know.

It’s important that we have your current information so that you receive your statements and other important information in a timely manner. We may also contact you to verify suspicious activity on your account. For example, if we believe someone has used your debit card fraudulently, we will call or text you to verify the transactions in question. If we can’t reach you, your debit card could be temporarily blocked until you contact us.

To update your address, stop in one of our offices or download the address change request form from our website at www.columbusmetro.org. If your email address or phone number(s) have changed, simply let us know the next time you call, stop in or email us. SAY GOODBYE TO PAPER STATEMENTS FROM THE SSAThe Social Security Administration recently announced that they will send fewer statements by mail to reduce costs. The measure will save the government $11.3 million in 2017.

The statements detail information on your earnings, the payroll taxes you’ve contributed and your estimated benefits. Until now, you received a statement every five years between ages 25 and 55 and then annually once you turned 60. Now, only individuals who are age 60 and older, not receiving benefits and not signed up for an

online Social Security account will receive a paper statement.

If you don’t receive a paper statement, you can view an online version when you sign up for a my Social Security account at www.ssa.gov/myaccount/.

TEACH CHILDREN TO SAVE DAY IS APRIL 28You teach your children to read, to tie their shoes, to ride a bike. But one of the most important lessons you can ever teach them is how to manage money.

The lessons don’t have to be complicated, and savvy saving can start at any age. Best-selling author Neale Godfrey recommends helping your child split up any money he or she earns, receives or even finds. Show them how to divide their money using the 10% - 30% - 30% - 30% system and put it in four separate, labeled containers. Clear jars are best – this makes savings visible and real. After all, everyone enjoys watching their money grow!

• Charity (10%) – Take 10% off the top to share.

• Quick Cash (30%) – Use this for instant gratification.

• Medium-Term Savings (30%) – Save this for one to six months to purchase something special.

• Long-Term Savings (30%) – Use this 30% for important things in the future, like college.

At Columbus Metro, we offer two programs to help you teach your kids about money: the Metro Kids Club featuring Kirby Kangaroo for children 12 and under, and Claim Your Youth for those ages 13 to 17. And visit the Money As You Grow website, www.moneyasyougrow.org, for age-appropriate lessons about saving, making choices and avoiding debt.

1 YOU NEED MONEY to buy things.

2 You earn money by WORKING.

3 You may have to WAIT BEFORE YOU CAN BUY something you want.

4 There’s a difference between THINGS YOU WANT and things you need.

5 You need to MAKE CHOICES about how to spend your money.

6 It’s good to shop around and COMPARE PRICES before you buy.

7 It can be costly and DANGEROUS TO SHARE INFORMATION online.

8 Putting your money in a savings account will PROTECT it and pay you interest.

9 You should SAVE AT LEAST A DIME for every dollar you receive.

10 Entering personal information, like a bank or credit card number, online is risky because SOMEONE COULD STEAL IT.

11 The sooner you save, the FASTER YOUR MONEY CAN GROW from compound interest.

12 USING A CREDIT CARD IS LIKE TAKING OUT A LOAN; if you don’t pay your bill in full every month, you’ll be charged interest and owe more than you originally spent.

13 When COMPARING COLLEGES, be sure to consider how much each school would cost you.

14 You should AVOID USING CREDIT CARDS to buy things you can’t afford to pay for with cash.

15 Your first paycheck may seem smaller than expected since MONEY IS TAKEN OUT FOR TAXES.

16 A great place to SAVE AND INVEST MONEY you earn is in a Roth IRA.

17 You should use a credit card only if you can PAY OFF THE MONEY OWED IN FULL each month.

18 You need HEALTH INSURANCE.

19 It’s important to save at least three months’ worth of living expenses IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY.

20 When investing, consider THE RISKS AND THE ANNUAL EXPENSES.

RETHINK THE BELLS & WHISTLES

Expensive navigation and “infotainment” systems. Voice command. Social media integration. Power doors and power folding seats.

Items like these can add thousands of dollars to the price of a new vehicle. But do you really need them? In many cases, these features would be great … if they worked as well as advertised. In others, the smartphone or tablet you already own will work just fine and give you more flexibility.

And don’t forget what more technology can mean in the long term: Glitches. Regular updates. System upgrades. High repair costs when something goes wrong. You can save yourself time, money and aggravation by skipping these features entirely.

If you do have room in your budget for extras, experts recommend safety-related options like back-up cameras and sensors, tire pressure monitoring systems, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning systems and parking assist systems. They may not be as exciting as some of the other glitzy gadgets, but they could save your life. And that’s worth paying a little extra for.
