Items To Be Sent To Complete Registration

1. A completed Registration Form (Both Sides)

2. $50 Registration Fee (non-refundable): This fee is not included in your tuition. It pays for the work required to enter your name and contact information into both paper and computer records, to start your scheduling process, and also for the time we may spend communicating with you to be sure you’re comfortable with every aspect of the time you will be spending with us.

All of this takes place as soon as we receive your form, so, even if you need to cancel, the work has already been done; therefore, the fee is non-refundable. However it is a one-time charge, so, no matter how many weeks you register, the fee is only applied once for each student.

3. $200 Deposit for each week selected: Deposits guarantee your place in what often become sold-out programs.

On May 1, we send student lists to our faculty for the coming season with the understanding they will be paid for these students. Therefore, after May 1, Program Deposits are non- refundable.

4. $25 Coached Ensemble Option deposit for each week selected: After May 1 deposits are non- refundable.

If you choose this option, which may only be taken ALONG WITH ONE OF OUR INSTRUMENTAL PROGRAMS, the deposit holds your place in the Coached Ensemble Option for the week(s) you choose.

5. Credit card payments can be made by calling 207-733-7509, please note that there will be a 2% fee associated with

this. DO NOT submit your credit card info on-line.

if you plan to participate in the Coached Ensemble Option

COACHED ENSEMBLE OPTION If you choose to register for Coached Ensemble, please bear in mind that THIS IS NOT A CHAMBER MUSIC PROGRAM. The whole focus at SummerKeys is on personalized individual instruction aimed at helping each participant to improve instrumental, vocal, or compositional skills. The Coached Ensemble Option is designed to introduce participants to the experience of learning to play music as part of a duo or group and is set up as follows:

• No tape or audition is required and novice players are welcome to participate.

• Late Monday afternoon, having worked with all students requesting Coached Ensemble, the faculty meets to decide what groups or duos may be formed, so that each person will derive maximum benefit from the Ensemble experience.

• They are careful to select works of excellent quality, but works which also may be accomplished in the four daily coaching sessions, which culminate in the optional performance of the selected work.

• Music and schedules for the coaching sessions are distributed at the Monday evening social or left at the office, as the student prefers.

• Every effort is made to organize groups of three or more players, but our experience has shown that participants have greatly benefited from the ensemble experience, even when two persons (such as cello/piano, piano 4-hands, cello/cello) are involved.

• By signing below you agree to accept whatever the faculty decides will work best for you. WE DO REGRET THAT THERE CAN BE NO LAST MINUTE CHANGES.

• If you decide after the Monday night meeting that you are not going to participate in an ensemble that has been formed for you, please understand that you will not be entitled to a refund of any kind.

• Advanced students willing to accept these conditions are welcome to participate. • Students enrolling in Mandolin and/or Guitar in Ensemble may not sign up for the coached ensemble option. These programs include their own ensemble coaching. If you’ve already had some ensemble experience, please describe: ______________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________________ I understand and agree to the terms described above: (signature required if Coached Ensemble Option is selected) (date) PLEASE NOTE; IF YOU ARE COMING WITH A PRE-FORMED GROUP, SUBMIT THE MEMBERS’ NAMES, INSTRUMENTS, AND THE SPECIFIC WORK TO BE COACHED NO LESS THAN FOUR WEEKS IN ADVANCE OF YOUR ARRIVAL. WE WILL DO OUR BEST TO ACCOMMODATE.

2015 NEWSLETTER

Affectionate Greetings from the director: The summer of 2014 swept by us with an opening gust from Hurricane Edward – not supposed to hit us at all, but which brought down huge and ancient trees all over town, including the beloved copper beech by Congregational Christian Church, taking out part of a priceless stained-glass window as well. Even March brought unrest, with the death of George Lelievre, that dear man who invented

(continues on page 15…..)

the scheduling program for our computer. But as our inspired faculty continued to sweep in from all over the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, an air of optimism finally took over to officially launch another great season. We had twelve incredible concerts, including a complete performance of Schoenberg’s “Pierrot Lunaire”, the student Performance Classes continued their impressive climb toward professionalism, and we were able to pay faculty to work their musical magic with the young people in Lubec’s annual Summer Recreation Program. We’d had to send one of our big Yamaha grands down to the school when the water pipes froze in Sacred Heart Parish Hall, so the kids got use of it also. Responding to the Masons’ kind offer, we bought another Yamaha upright so we’d have the use of their hall for practice space. We moved the Monday Evening Socials to the Congregational Parsonage, where we provide the light supper, so it’s now free and much more pleasant. We were sorry to accept Jack Fergusson’s bid for retirement, but “his” two weeks will be filled by Patricia Caya (July 27 – 31), a teacher and performer with a wide reputation “Downeast” and Ali Garrison, an old friend of SummerKeys’, now teaching and performing in Canada. Also, a different “slant” on vocal work will be provided when our new program in “Cabaret” takes over the intimate stage of the beautifully refurbished Lubec Grange (see page 2).

New SummerKeys Programs 2015

CABARET Cabaret: August 10, August 17 Daily group class, 3 private lessons, daily practice time. $645

CABARET FACULTY

David Alpher & Jennie Litt 8/10, 8/17 Mr. Alpher is an internationally recognized art song/chamber music composer and currently works as the collaborative pianist/vocal coach at Vassar College. Ms. Litt is a two-time ASCAPlus Award winner and has performed at all the major NYC clubs, including 54 Below and Stage 72.

Cabaret is an intimate musical art form, in which a performer puts his or her personal stamp on a song through honest exploration of the lyric. Students do not need to know how to read music, nor do they need to have taken voice lessons or studied acting. That said, professionals from other theatrical and musical genres who are interested in exploring the unique art form of cabaret are welcome!

FIDDLE Fiddle: August 17 Five private 60-minute lessons weekly, daily group classes, two hours practice daily. $645 FIDDLE FACULTY Andrea Hoag 8/17 Grammy nominee, performs with the cross-cultural Dovetail Ensemble and many others. Graduated from the Folk Violin Pedagogy program at Malungs Folkhögskola in Sweden.

SCHOLARSHIPS

A limited amount of tuition aid is now available for students in need. The first person(s) awarded such funding may also qualify for one or two weeks of free accommodation through the generosity of Inn at the Anchorage (one offer per month: June, July, August).

The George Lelievre Memorial Scholarship Fund

(continued from page 1) Violin will get its own new twist when we present a week of “Fiddle” at the season’s end (see page 2). As you can see, we’ll be continuing to expand in 2015, and in order to maintain the standards you’ve come to expect, while keeping our facilities safe, comfortable and attractive, we’ll raise the basic tuition by $25 (just that

May the lure of bald eagles, harbor seals, wild roses and wild surf crashing at the foot of stony cliffs draw you into our musical world, anew or again!!!

, - no change in coached ensemble or deposits). As a foil to that, please consider the scholarship assistance described on page 2, rather than stay at home.

A Note from Helen Lelievre

:

Words fall short, but I want to try to say, "Thank you" for all the love and support you have poured over me since George's death in March. Your notes, cards, emails, phone calls, hugs, kind words, smiles, encouragement, presence, patience, storytelling, and the shared tears, and laughter have helped me so very much. And the music... I think we all know of the wondrous powers of music, but I was blessed to experience it for the eleven weeks of SummerKeys 2014 ... special thanks to those who dedicated music selections to George. Thank you to those who donated to the Lubec Library, and the SummerKeys Scholarship Fund. I will continue as registrar for SummerKeys, and I look forward to continued contact with many of you, and to the 2015 season. As George would say, "SummerKeys is family in every way but blood." With heartfelt appreciation, Helen Lelievre

“It’s been nearly a month and I’m still buzzing about my experience at SummerKeys. It is one of the most memorable summer vacations of my life - plus, I learned exactly what I needed to help me move forward with my fledgling piano career.”

THE MUSIC SummerKeys offers the busy adult an opportunity to be immersed in the study and practice of a musical instrument. There are no admission requirements. The premise is: come as you are and enjoy the study, the work, the camaraderie, and the beauty of the Maine Coast. The program is open to all levels - from very beginning students to accomplished players. Courses are offered in piano, voice, clarinet, jazz piano, classical guitar, flute, Baroque flute, recorder, cello, violin, viola, fiddle, mandolin, trumpet, Celtic harp, oboe, organ, composition, “Instrumentarium”, photography, creative writing, cabaret, and dance. Faculty members, adept in their disciplines and experienced in teaching adults, tailor private sessions and classes to accommodate your musical goals and interests. While both study and practice at SummerKeys are intensive, the atmosphere is relaxed and noncompetitive. You work at your instrument in ways that are rewarding to you.

THE ADVENTURE Lubec is a lovely old fishing village that feels stepped back in time. In a setting of pristine beauty, on a hill at the end of a peninsula jutting into the Bay of Fundy and abutting Campobello Island, it has remained isolated from the frantic quality of modern life. The international boundary marker between Maine and New Brunswick is located at the tip of the town breakwater, and you can walk into Canada across the International Bridge. One comes away remembering gleaming church spires, white clapboards with green shutters and fishing wharves. You’ll probably enjoy your five days at SummerKeys most if you arrive in time for the orientation meeting at7:30 on Sunday night and arrange to stay through Friday evening to try a bit of performance on your own, (strictly optional!) or just to hear some of your new friends play.

Area attractions include Quoddy Head State Park and its famous West Quoddy Lighthouse (the easternmost point of land in the US) and, on Campobello, the FDR Residence, the East Quoddy Lighthouse, and a beautifully groomed 9-hole public golf course overlooking the sea. The great Fundy tides rise and fall about 18 feet in the crystal-clear waters surrounding Lubec, where you can see fish and watch harbor seals frolic at high tide. Eagles nest nearby at the Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge, and you can take boat trips from Machias to Machias Seal Island to watch puffins. Whale watch cruises leave from Lubec as well as nearby Eastport and Campobello. Freshwater swimming and fishing also abound. There are countless lakes and rivers within easy driving distance and miles upon miles of spectacular hiking trails atop the cliffs by the sea. Area tours are available.

THE FACILITIES SummerKeys occupies a cedar-shingled structure built as Lubec’s Masonic Hall in 1826 and later moved to its present location, overlooking Campobello Island and Johnson Bay. We’ve also expanded into the house just next door and just recently purchased a large residence near the town center. Behind the main buildings, a spacious double practice-studio overlooks the bay (as do several others). Additionally, a few local residents and two churches have generously opened their doors for our use. All pianos are kept in top condition, tuned to A440, and serviced weekly. Located in private, sound-dampened rooms are grands: two Steinways, two Baldwins, three Yamahas (including a virtually new C7), a Mason & Hamlin, a Chickering, a Hardman, and uprights: four Yamaha professionals, a Charles Walters, and a Steinway. The main building houses what is probably the best music library in Downeast Maine, including both scores and books.

THE PROGRAM PRIVATE LESSONS Private lessons are the core component of the SummerKeys experience. Our instructors are carefully chosen not just for a wide overview in their discipline, but also for their demonstrated love of teaching and upbeat positive attitude toward students. All of our faculty are active performers and bring this invaluable practical experience to their work. You may begin to learn your instrument, receive advice on music you bring, or ask an instructor to recommend material from our library. You will come away from these sessions energized with valuable new insights and a desire to work even harder on your return home. 4

PRACTICE TIME Practice time ranges from two to three hours daily, depending on the course of study you select. Lessons and practice times are scheduled so that you have free time to explore the area.

GROUP CLASSES The frequency of group classes is determined by each instructor. Theory classes will be offered during all weeks.

PERFORMANCE CLASSES (OPTIONAL) Keenly aware of the motivational value of preparing to play for others, yet equally aware of the stress this creates for most of us, SummerKeys provides two performance venues. Each Friday evening, students can choose to perform for each other and their guests; two afternoon classes, “Perform for Your Peers”, are student-organized (no faculty allowed), and so relaxed and informal that even the shyest among us may want to try them.

COACHED ENSEMBLE OPTION Coached Ensemble Option is offered each week, from 6/15 through 8/28. The faculty will place enrollees in groups as appropriate to each individual’s ability as possible. Music will be assigned and distributed on Monday evenings. Coaching takes place Tuesdays through Fridays. Beginners are encouraged to participate and are as welcome as experienced players.

Gene Nichols might aptly be called the Music Man of Washington County, Maine; as a matter of fact, he played that role twice when the Meredith Willson musical was presented here. Professor and head of the Music Department at U. Maine, Machias, his deep love of music has led him to explore even its offbeat nooks and crannies. His original training is in low brass, but whatever you bring--hubcaps, saw, ukulele, bulbhorns, something unique--he will help you play it better. Music making as creative fun using general improvisation techniques (not specifically related to classical or jazz) will be explored.
