VPX

VPX was defi ned by American Logic Ma-chines Inc. (ALM) as a scalable backplane based technology. VPX known as VITA 46, is an ANSI standard (ANSI/VITA 46.0-2007) that provides VMEbus-based systems with support for switched fabrics over new high speed connectors. The origins of the VPX was, to address the short con-nections in scalability and performance of on both side of the bus to bus brid-ging technology. The goal was to include the newer faster VMEbus standards and, on the local bus side, to include the new generation of PCI bus standards. VPX computer bus standard - V -VME and P -PCI and X the extents for both buses standards.

New generations of embedded systems based on the VPX standard refl ect the growing signifi cance of high speed serial switched fabric interconnects such as PCI Express, RapidIO, Infi niband and 10Gigabit Ethernet. These technologies are replacing traditional parallel com-munications bus architectures for local communications, because they offer signifi cant greater capability. Switched fabrics technology supports the imple-mentation of multiprocessing systems that require the fastest possible commu-nications between multiple processors (e.g., digital signal processing applica-tions). VPX gives the large existing base of VMEbus users access to these swit-ched fabrics.

OpenVPX

The VITA (VME International Trade As-sociation) working group was formed in January 2009 to develop a system-level specifi cation that addressed interopera-bility improvements for the VITA 46 (VPX) specifi cation. The goal was to improve the interoperability of COTS 3U and 6U VPX boards through the implementa-tion of predefi ned system topologies, and thus to lower the risk of adoption, expand the addressable market for VPX solutions, increase the market oppor-tunities, and accelerate the deployment of VPX solutions into defense related applications.

The OpenVPX System Specifi cation describes the technical implementation details for 3U and 6U VPX payload and switch modules, backplane topologies, and chassis products, which provides clear guidance on how to build intero-perable computing and communication platforms. Widespread adoption of OpenVPX will ultimately create a healthy ecosystem of interoperable components and systems providing customers with the benefi ts of reuse, choice of best of breed, faster time-to-market, lower risk technology refresh, and a more competi-tive marketplace.OpenVPX should be seen as a develop-ment of, and complementary to, VPX.

The OpenVPX System Specifi cation was ratifi ed by ANSI in June 2010.

What is OPEN VPX?

Open VPX was the industry s attempt to bring order to chaos. Open VPX metho-dically defi nes a system of profi les that would fully explain the interactions between the backplane and plug-in modules. The profi les are the physical mapping of recources in the system. This information can then be used to deter-mine compatibility.

What is an OPEN VPX Pipe?

A term used to characterize the total number of differentialpairs (Rx and Tx) accessible, regardless of protocol.

The pipe is used to standardize differen-tial pair groups, regardless of protocol. There is also specifi c terminology in determining the width of the pipe. See the table.

What are open VPX Modules?

A board that conforms to defi ned mecha-nical and electrical specifi cations such a 3U and 6U plug-in modules.

VITA 65.0 defi nes multiple module types depending on funtionality. These types are self explanatory and are provided below for reference.

What is open VPX Plane?

To simplify connectivity descriptions in the open VPX profi les, the standard seperates all signal into 6 unique groups, called planes, as noted in the table below.The planes are never interconnect and are only used to clarify the purpose of the available connections on the back-plane.

Control Plane

This level is not required for VPX System operation. It is defi ned by VITA 46.11 to connect two VPX Systems internal (via Backplane) or external via RTM over GB Ethernet signals.

Data plane

Open VPX was the industry s attempt to be the most important plane with the high speed connections on P1 to the backplane. The Data plane protocol must match for all modules in a system to have interoperability.

Management Plane

Open VPX was the industry s attempt to be also defi ned by VITA 46.11 and it is intended to implement the Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI).

Utility Plane

Open VPX was the industry s attempt to be this level contains all of the power, slot level management and System iden-tifi cation as required in VITA 46.0.

User I/O

It is the term given to any backplane connections that are not part of the above planes.

A description of the physical resource mapping within the system.VITA 65.0 completely characterizes a VPX system within the scope of 4 types of profi les:Backplane, Chassis, Module and Slot. A brief description of each is given in the following table.

Backplanes

As previously noted, the biggest problem with VITA 46 was the lack of any guidance with the backplane routing. To clarify and to standardize the problem, open VPX provides 14 Standard backplane confi gurations. The Backplane profi le describes the number of slots, the standards sup-ported and the topology for connecting the boards.

Renice X9 rugged SATA Series

The X9 SSD series RSATA SSD is available in different capacities. Equipped with a ruggedized SATA connector, Military Gra-de X9 series 2.5“ RSATA SSD is specially designed for avionic and military appli-cations. Based on Renice self-developed RS3502-IT controller and MLC/SLC NAND Flash, the X9 series delivers maximum capacity of 2TB and excellent IOPS and 4K R/W performance. Whole disk is designed and produced according to MIL-STD-810F standard so that X9 is quite competent to work in harsh environ-

ment. Besides, X9 series is also provided with integral power fail protection, AES 256-bit Encryption and multiple Secure Erase functions. Unique over-voltage, over-current protection to circuit, which is perfect suitable for the instability scenarios of the armoured car, battle plane, unmanned aerial vehicle, motor vehicle etc. Additionally, abnormal power failure protection is included, supported by 30000 times power down test with zero failure warranty. R-Backup patent technology do protect the data 100% there is not loss when the capacitor is

Renice X7 SATA Series

Renice X7 SATA SSD drive is designed for use in harsh environments, utili-zing standard interfaces, such as SATA connector. MLC NAND Flash is used for capacities of up to 4TB (7mm height), 8TB are available with 9,5mm height. The X7 series do offer encryption mode, Hard-ware secure erase and military secure erase protocol.

FIN-SConcurrent Technologies Fabric Interconnect Networking software (FIN-S) is a family of software packages, that provides a rich fabric software ecosystem allowing ap-plications on multiple processor boards to communicate with each other. The FIN-S software is available on a range of Concurrent Technologies boards, utilizing Intel and ARM processors, including: Intel Core i7 processors, Intel Atom processors, NVI-DIA Tegra K1 processors.There are different packages available:

Device Communication (DCOM)

The FIN-S DCOM package enables com-munication between Concurrent Techno-logies and third-party boards, it utilizes either PCI Express fabric or RapidIO. DCOM is available for different operating systems, such as Linux, Windows and VxWorks.For PCI express, it do support device operating in endpoint or non-transpa-rent mode.

Embedded Clustering (EC)

The FIN-S EC package has the ability to run off-the-shelf OpenDDS and OpenMPI communication middleware. It does support the latest interconnect fabrics, Rapi-dIO and PCI Express. EC do offer an IP socket based communication interface, the true point-to-point communication between the modes is based upon the standard socket library API. Standard IP features such as multicast are supported. Additional runtime statistics can be obtained from the system upon request.

assessments of C4ISR technologies and concepts. CERDEC‘s product manager for C4ISR On-the-Move assesses the effec-tiveness of inserting new technologies into an operationally relevant environ-ment. CERDEC collaborates with Army, DoD and other stakeholders to provide C4ISR models, simulated architectures and automated tools in support of requi-rement defi nition, design and enginee-ring, manufacturing, test and evaluation.
