This presentation will begin with an update on the current structure of CSA standards on hearing loss prevention and review the main changes to the recent editions. The second part of the presentation will cover standard Z107.56 with a focus on methods to assess sound exposure from the use of communication headsets in the workplace. The latest 2018 version of the indirect calculation method will be covered in detail with case examples. This simple method does not require specialized equipment or in-ear measurements and has been designed to facilitate the assessment of communication headsets sound exposure by industrial hygienists, health & safety professionals and stakeholders in hearing loss prevention.

Since the enactment in 1979 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act in Ontario, employers and education institutions have increasingly embraced and supported the concept of the safety practitioner and the important role the profession contributes to safer and more efficient workplaces. In the spring of 2019, the Board of Canadian Registered Safety Professionals (BCRSP) and the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering (CSSE) conducted a survey on regulating the OHS profession. The survey results showed 90% believe there is value in regulating the practice of safety, but only 70% believe the profession is ready for regulation. This session will discuss the evolution of the profession, the implications and benefits of regulating the profession and the BCRSP’s progress in the development of a National Framework for title recognition and legislated status for the health and safety profession.

WHMIS training is obligatory across the country and it includes knowledge of chemical Safety Data Sheets (SDSs). Despite this, many workers do not have a good understanding of the health impacts of chemicals they use in their workplaces. This is a particular issue for small to medium sized businesses (SMEs) who do not have regular access to OHS professionals. This session will tell you about a tool created by the Ryerson team to help you better understand SDSs and to prioritize health hazards of your workplace chemicals. The Chemical Hazard Assessment and Prioritization (CHAP) tool was piloted by six workplaces for effectiveness, usability, and usefulness. Attend this session to hear more about the results of the pilot testing and see a demo of the electronic version of the CHAP tool now in trial.

But what do we really know about Canadian workers’ use of cannabis and how they think about cannabis use at work? Has any of this changed since legalization? Dr. Carnide will describe a multi-year study currently being conducted by the Institute for Work and Health on cannabis use and the Canadian workplace. The study involves surveying workers from a wide range of industries and occupations across Canada. Dr. Carnide will share some of the findings from the first two surveys to come out of this study: one before legalization, and another conducted nearly a year later. Learn about Canadian workers’ cannabis use patterns (including their use before and at work), what they know about cannabis, their thoughts on the risks and impacts of cannabis use and work, and what the culture around cannabis is at their workplaces.

The Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) is an Administrative Authority acting on behalf of the Government of Ontario with a mandate to promote and undertake activities which enhance public electrical safety. ESA is also responsible for administering regulation in four key areas, one of which is the Ontario Electrical Safety Code. Inspections, investigations and enforcement (II&E) activities help to manage risks to the public interest. Risk management is a continuous improvement process that identifies potential hazards and undesirable events; understanding their likelihood and consequences; and taking steps to control the risks if necessary. To achieve these results, a good risk management process considers both real and perceived risks and all stakeholders’ needs. ESA’s wiring inspection activities is a place where risk management practices are applied. Starting in 2020 ESA will move to a risk-based approach for electrical wiring. This means spending more effort on high-risk electrical wiring work, and less on low risk work without compromising health and safety.
