FOOD PANTRIES

Pantries provide food to the general public on an ongoing basis. Pantries may limit the number of times they serve the

same recipient in a given time period. All pantries strive to provide balanced food bags that include all food groups.

Typically, the food is nonperishable, i.e. canned goods and dried beans, pasta and rice. Some pantries provide three day

supplies of food for people in crisis situations put together according to a suggested menu and based on family size. Other

pantries focus on perishable foods such as produce, dairy and bread and include a limited number of nonperishable items.

Most agencies require some form of identification from recipients and each person in their household. Food Pantries may

require recipients to call ahead for an appointment. A small number of pantries ask people to get a referral from another

agency. Please share the information about pantry requirements included with the pantry description with the people you

are helping.

Senior Food Program

The Senior Food Program is a program of the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano.

Senior Food Program members must be 55 years of age or older, live in one of the areas served by the program, and have

gross monthly incomes under the chart listed below. In general each recipient is expected to pick up his or her bag, unless

other arrangements are made by the participant. Applicants can fill out a one-page application form at the Senior Food

Program site in their area or call the food bank (925-676-7543) and an application will be mailed to them.

Distribution is twice a month; Senior Food Program members who are unable to pick up a bag at their site can send

someone to pick up on their behalf. The bags vary but in general each contains seven to eight different items with bread,

fresh fruits and vegetables, and canned food items the most common.
