DIRECTOR’S WELCOME

DIRECTOR’S DEALS

Mark O’BrienDirector

Come and Create Welcome to an exciting new season at axis. This event guide is filled with events, shows, projects and programmes that we have put together for you to enjoy. One of the highlights of our season will see us producing the world premiere of Ballymun born poet Colm Keegan’s first play ‘For Saoirse’ as part of the Dublin Fringe Festival at axis. This is a very special play to me and I hope you enjoy it when it opens in September. This continues our commitment to the development of new work, new creativity and new writing. In this vein I am delighted to also announce Aaron Carey as our youth artist in residence on a bursary in the name of much missed Ballymun artist John Duffy. This season we also welcome back the Dublin Theatre Festival, Ballymun’s Otherworld Festival, and we will be working in schools all across Ballymun, working with Trinity Comprehensive on their arts guarantee, and offering space for artists and the community

to come and createAxis is a place for all to come and develop their creativity, to have a cup of tea, to take part in a class, to come see a show. I am proud to work at the heart of this great community of Ballymun and I would like to thank you all for your continued support which has seen our audiences grow year on year. So whether it’s your first time visiting or you’re a long-time friend we can’t wait to greet you this year.Dream out Loud

“Here’s the granite swish swish, the rise and dip dip of the walls of the liffey, the whip whip of the amber lit streetlights…”

Witty and trippy, Colm Keegan’s debut play hums with rich poetic language. Craner, about to be a Dad, takes us on a madcap journey from Ballymun to the Rotunda and back again. Stumbling through a city falling down, a past that won’t let go, to a future he never planned. Walls come tumbling, past and present collide on this rollercoaster ride through a life and city on the brink of… something.

One month before his death, retired civil servant and man of few words Paddy O’Grady had a sudden urge to talk. Using a cassette tape recorder, he recorded hours of absurdist stories and musings on life. Now, Paddy’s granddaughter examines the fragile personas we present to the world, who we might be behind them and who we could be instead in a show about emotional inheritance and grief for wasted creativity that serves as both a tribute and a warning.

Presented as part of the Dublin Theatre Festival.

‘I didn’t want to get involved.’ — Anonymous NeighbourThe Bystander is an intriguing and adventurous theatre production by multi-award winning & internationally acclaimed dance innovators Junk Ensemble. Taking its name from the ‘bystander effect’ phenomenon of the murder of Kitty Genovese outside her apartment in New York City in 1964, whereby thirty-eight witnesses saw or heard the attack, yet none of them called for help, The Bystander brings to the surface some of the murkier and complex behaviours of contemporary society.

Performed by an exceptional acclaimed cast and drawing on the expertise of a psychologist, The Bystander gets under the skin of how we behave as individuals and groups. What makes us help someone and what makes us simply stand by? ‘The world is a dangerous place to live; not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don’t do anything about it.’ — Albert EinsteinJunk Ensemble are Project Artists, an initiative of Project Arts Centre.

My name is Marcie. I’ve been here for ten years, three months and two days. Here, all our names begin with M. There’s Max, Melissa, Mary, Mark, Michael and Malcolm. This is the M house. There’s also an A house, a B

house, a C house, a D house…. you get the picture. We’re supposed to sit and watch TV all the time but we have other ideas… and we’ve got questions… lots of questions.

The M House is an adventure story. It’s a satirical look at the legacy of institutional Ireland. It’s a scramble to make sense of our one-size-fits-all culture. It’s a parable of our times about the treatment of our vulnerable.

The M House is a play for anyone who’s ever been put in a box.

Tá Jeramee, Hartleby agus Oooglemore cois trá. Tá go leor ag tarlú – caitheann Hartleby go leor ama ag tabhairt orduithe agus é ag iarraidh an áit is fearr ar an trá a aimsiú. Tosaíonn Oooglemore ag damhsa agus ag déanamh gaisce ach buaileann sé an liathróid go róchrua, cailleann sé é agus milleann sé an cluiche. Imíonn Hartleby leis agus é crosta. Cuireann Jeramee gach rud ina cheart arís.

Baineann Jeramee, Hartleby agus Oooglemore sásamh agus só as a soineantacht álainn agus as a n-amaideacht aoibhinn féin. Tagann an triúr seo le chéile agus neart le rá acu ach gan ach trí fhocal acu lena rá.

Jeramee, Hartleby and Oooglemore are at the seaside. Things happen – Hartleby spends a lot of time being bossy and trying to find the perfect spot. Oooglemore does some crazy dancing, shows off a bit, hits the shuttlecock too hard, loses it, spoils the game. Hartleby goes off in a huff. Jeramee makes it all OK.

Revelling in delightful innocence and glorious stupidity, Jeramee, Hartleby and Oooglemore is a surprising and surreal encounter with three people who have a lot to say but only three words with which to say it.

Léiríonn Fíbín ‘An Triail’ le Máiréad Ní Ghráda, an dráma clasaiceach Nua-Ghaeilge. Seo leagan ar leith de ‘An Triail’ i stíl Fíbín! Téann Fíbín i ngleic le ceisteanna a ardaíonn múinteoirí agus scoláirí araon, trí phlota a bhreathnaíonn as dáta a thabhairt isteach i gcomhthéacs sochaí nua-aimseartha ag baint úsáid as puipéid, maisc, radhairc tharraingteacha agus léirithe daonna chun lucht féachana óg, ach go háirithe a mhealladh ar bhealach a thagann le saol na linne seo agus gur féidir teacht ar seó go héasca. Téann an léiriú seo i bhfad lasmuigh den nádúr dubh agus bán atá sa chaint agus cuidíonn an seó na constaicí san fhoghlaim a shárú le seó fuinniúil, mealltach agus greannmhar.

Fíbín presents its highly acclaimed version of the modern Irish classic, ‘An Triail’ by Máiréad Ní Ghráda as you have never seen it before! Fíbín addresses issues highlighted by both teachers and students alike, by bringing a seeming outdated plot into the context of modern society using, puppets, masks, engaging visuals and physical performances to appeal particularly to a younger audience, making it current and more accessible. This production goes beyond the black and white nature of the dialogue and helps to overcome these obstacles to learning in a snappy, engaging and humorous show.

A Sunday in Hell In 1976 a little-known Danish film maker, Jorgen Leth, embarked on an ambitious project to capture the spirit of cycling’s toughest and cruellest Classic, Paris-Roubaix, in a new and epic way. Leth tried to show every significant moment during the day, to portray its heroes – Roger de Vlaeminck, Eddy Merckx, Freddy Maertens – as mythical figures, and used radical techniques - the helicopter mounted Wescam, an experimental choral soundtrack - and the finest cameramen of the day. The result was probably the finest-ever depiction of a single-day cycle race, a film that has itself become a Classic. Best selling writer William Fotheringham has written a widely praised “biography” of Leth’s meisterwerk – how it was conceived and made and what became of the men and the places in it – and will be on hand to answer questions about the film and its maker.

A hilarious and heartwarming tale of confusion, Communion and confessional boxes. It’s 1985 and two girls are getting ready for the social occasion of the year—their First Holy Communion. Mary and Majella have been sworn enemies since baby infants, and things have gone from bad to worse since Mary’s daddy moved in with Majella’s mammy. Scrambling for insults to fling at each other, Majella thinks she’s found a weak spot when she discovers Mary’s Communion dress is actually a second hand one donated to the “Vincent and Paul”. Will Majella use this devastating info to take down her nemesis, or realise that she and Mary might not be so different after all? In typical Eoin Colfer fashion the characters are recognisably real and achingly funny. The cast of two play two mothers, a benevolent priest, a patient teacher, a misguided father and two cheeky but lovable nine year olds. One day. One dynamic building. 200 young men. This November axis welcomes young men (15 - 24 years) to take part in a creative take-over of our building and spaces. Over the day our theatre, dance studios, conferences spaces, recording studio and art room will be filled with young men in conversation, performing, debating, networking and playing. At the heart of the convention is one key question – How do we encourage young men to get creative about their well-being?This event is inspired by our award winning Creative Space – a four-year project series exploring young men, mental health and creativity and is supported by the HSE, Department of Health Promotion

Axis is delighted to host this very special gig from Paul Alwright with a live band on the axis stage.

Musician and actor Paul Alwright released three albums under the name Lethal Dialect. Recently he shed the moniker with the release of his new album ‘Hungry’ in May under his own name, citing a change in artistic direction.

They want to change their blurb as well to “Set in October 1978 - Pope John Paul the First is not long dead, autumn is closing in and Pat Farnon has ‘some business’ to do in town. The Man In The Woman’s Shoes follows Pat Farnon as he walks to town and back again. It is a beautifully observed piece, utterly simple and widely praised. The show is funny, tender and at times downright daft. Originally commissioned by Sligo County Council Arts Service and The Hawk’s Well Theatre, Sligo as part of the Bealtaine Festival 2012, it toured to to Manhattan and Philadelphia in 2015 as well as a sell out, three week run at the Abbey Theatre on the Peacock stage in Dublin. In 2016 it returned to NYC and also played to full houses over three weeks at the Tricycle Theatre in London. It has just finished a two month run at the Irish Arts Centre in Manhattan.

It’s Dublin in the 1980s. Rabbit is a self-made haulage magnate. But something’s wrong. He cuts a deal with his underling Keogh to help him find his lost moorings. The quest is hampered by his dead father Bat, Citizen Army volunteer and pawn shop assistant, bubbling up. The struggle between father and son, past and present, imagination and reality, spans Dublin. Their voyage out of Howth and up the River Liffey builds to a climax described by The Guardian as “one of the strongest dramatic conclusions I’ve ever seen”.
