THE SPIRIT

OF

1968

DEDICATIONThe Spirit of '68

ork on this yearbook began during the summer of 1967. The editors decidedto chronicle the events of the 1967-1968 school year. We do not, however, wishmerely to show those events but to suggest that behind and within them lies a deeperspirit—the Spirit of '68. Time passes very quickly. Therefore, we hope that this yearbookcan capture the moments and events that made up this year. This book, then, isdedicated to a true and honest picture of the people, places, and things that broughtabout a year of accomplishment, growth, development, knowledge, and fun — TheSpirit of '68.

DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.1929-1968

"free At Last, Free At Last, Thank God Almighty, We're FreeAt Last."

On April 4, 1968, an assassin's bullet shot down the champion of the civil rightsmovement, Dr. Martin King, Jr. It was a national tragedy, for not only was hea leader of the Negro people, he was the voice of human dignity and peace toall Americans.

Beginning in the late 1950's, Dr. King led boycotts, sit-ins, and demonstrationsin the name of equal rights for all. Preaching the concept of nonviolence that hehad learned from Ghandi, slowly but surely, progress was made. His efforts reacheda climax, when in 1964 the President signed into law the most comprehensive civilrights btli in history, a bill which outlawed discrimination in public accommodations.Later there was a voting rights bill, and just one week after his death, an act makingopen housing a law was passed.

When the more extreme elements of the movement shouted "Burn, baby, burn,"King answered with "Build, baby, build." For Martin Luther King had a dream. It wasa dream that, "one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of itscreed . . . that all men are created equal."

The night before he died it seemed as if he sensed the end of his life. In a speechin Memphis he claimed that he was no longer concerned about death. "I just want todo God's will, and He's allowed me to go up the mountain. And I've looked over, andI've seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you, but I want you to knowtonight that we as a people will get to the Promised land."

As we leave high school to begin our lives as adults, it will be our responsibilityto see that his people do reach the Promised land.
