Many students decide to do a round-the-world trip, often with a group of friends. Adrienne travelled with

Prince William worked on a community projectin southern Chile, and Prince Harry helped build aschool in South Africa. Popular projects includeidentifying turt les in Trinidad and Tobago, helpingpeople in the Brazilian rainforest or, like Tessa, teachingEnglish in the Andes. She loved the experience. Anddont forget insurance even the average backpackcontents are worth 450! Its easy to stay in contact with your friends andfamily. There are Internet cafs and some studentscreate blogs, updating them with news andphotographs. Friends and family can use GoogleEarth to follow your journey.

The experience of a gap year can change yourplans. Tim intended to study politics at university. But after six months as a farm worker in Chile, hedecided to study languages instead.

In a gap year you become more independent, improve your communication skills, and learn toorganise your time. These are important skills forthe workplace, so think carefully before you choosewhat to do. Your gap year is a time for having fun,but the real world will still be there when you gethome!
