Dr. Harshad Laxmidas Udeshi

Dr. Harshad Udeshi was born on 13th October, 1952 in Bhatia family in Mandvi Kutch. The family of Dr. Harshad Udeshi is usually recognized as HAMAL family. His grandfather was popularly known as Damodar Bhimji Hamal. His father Laxmidas Damodar Udeshi went to Zanzibar (East Africa) in 1958. Harshad as a kid also shifted to Zanzibar with the family and was there till 1964 and returned to India due to the revolution in 1964.

He did his primary schooling first in Zanzibar upto 6th Standard and then at Mandvi in Sheth Gokaldas Tejpal High School, (more than 100 years old school) from 7th to 11th Standard and always stood first. He did is Preparatory Science from Vithalbhai Patel Science College of VallabhVidyanagar and stood 9th in the University that secured him a direct admission to Pre-Medical at Vadodara. He did his MBBS from Baroda Medical College in 1975. He started his career as Resident Medical Officer at Anti TB Clinic Maska near Mandvi and then started his private clinic in 1981 as Family Physician and Chest Physician and since than i s c o n s i d e r e d t h e m o s t successful General Practitioner at Mandvi-Kutch. He has honorarily served as Medical Superintendent at Anti TB Clinic at Maska, near Mandvi. Dr. Udeshi even today investigates and treats at least 5 TB patients in a day and arranges for free treatment for these poor TB patients near their home through RNTCP program. He is associated with more than 17 public institutions.

He is Vice President of Jankalyan Medical Society established in 1993 working against Cancer. Every year nearly 5000 new cases of Cancer are detected in district of Kutch. Jankalyan Medical Society started the work by having Cancer Diagnostic Camps at different villages and all the nine taluka headquarters of Kutch. Dr. Udeshi used to teach the patients about Self Breast Examination and Self Oral Examination so as to have early diagnosis.

Dr. Udeshi is the Charter Member of Rotary Club of Mandvi from 1st January, 1979.He has been pillar behind bringing up Rotary Community Centre and Vaccination Centre & Rotary Children's Park at Mandvi at the cost of Rs.25 lakhs under the banner of Rotary Charitable Society. He is person behind the Permanent Vaccination Centre run by Rotary Club of Mandvi Kutch for the last 25 years. As a contact person, he was instrumental in preparing and successfully completing Matching Grant Project of Rotary Club of Mandv-Kutch worth Rs. 6.5 lacs with RC Evanston Lighthouse and Rotary Foundation for providing Air-conditioned Ambulance to Anti TB Clinic, Maska.

He has served the district as Governor's Group Representative (GGR), Governor's Aid, Member of various District Committees and Chairman of various committees. He was Assistant Governor for the year 1999-2000. He has been Counselor for Youth Services, Chairman Rotary Volunteers and Vice Chairman for District Conference Resolution Committee. He is perhaps the first District Governor who has served as a President of his club after having served as District Governor. He has been RYLA District Chairman in the year 2012-13. He is Co-Trainer, District Chairman PolioPlus Committee, District Chairman, Tuberculosis for the year 2013-14.Dr. Udeshi was

fortunate enough to have arranged Inter-District Family Exchange with District in Calcutta from our District in 1992-93 during his Chairmanship begging best Chairman's Gold Medal for the same. He was adjudged best GGR for the year 1986-87. He was adjudged best committee member for GSE Team Selection for the year 1998-1999. He was adjudged best Zonal District Secretary for the year 1997-98.Dr. Udeshi has the privilege of editing THREE District Directories in year of PDG Mohan Shah in 1994-95 and PDG Bharat Dholakia in 2001-2002 and then his own. He has to his credit three publications on Rotary. He has written number of articles in Different bulletins, souvenirs, local newspapers and AIR Bhuj on various Rotary and medical subjects. Dr. Udeshi had the privilege to lead the GSE Team of our District 3050 to District 4170 Mexico in the year 1995-96. He is also the recipient of prestigious THANCHAND MEHTA GOLD MEDAL for the year 1994-95 for the best community

ser v ices r endered by an individual Rotarian. He is also t h e r e c i p i e n t o f F O U R AVENUES OF SERVICE CITATION FOR INDIVIDUAL ROTARIAN by Rotary International. He is recipient of The Rotar y Fo u n d a t i o n ' s D I S TR I C T SERVICE AWARD for the year 1994-95. He is Executive Committee Member of Rotary Charitable Society and pioneer President of Rotary Charitable Society for seven years from 1998. He has been instrumental in starting Rotary Community Centre which has been named after Late Shri Dharmsey Nensey.

He is honorary Physician to the inmates of Deaf & Dumb School inhibiting 30 inmates for last 25 years. Dr. Udeshi and all the inmates have developed such an intimacy that without spoken language they can communicate very easily with each other. He has started permanent project of participating and involving the inmates on the day of Raksha bandhan. Now this has become the permanent project of Rotary Club of Mandvi Kutch.

Dr. Udeshi had been instrumental in starting a Women Empowerment Project of Family Planning Association of India at Mandvi covering nearby 18 villages of Mandvi taluka in the radius of 15 km covering the population of around 65 thousand from 1993 upto 2000. The women empowerment programs were arranged regularly in addition to giving Family Planning advices and doing vaccination of the children of the area covered.

Dr. Udeshi is the President of Sheth G.T. High School Bhutpurva Vidyarthi Mandal. He is Executive Committee member of Gokaldas Khimji & Mathradas Khimji Charitable Trust which runs three high Schools and Auditorium at Mandvi. More than 3000 students are studying in Sheth Khimji Ramdas Kanya Vidyalaya, Sakarbai Khimji Ramdas Memorial English Medium School and Ramkrishna High School.

He is happily married to Bhavna who is a Social Worker and is associated with five social organization working for women. He is blessed with two sons, Pranay an Engineer in Information Technology, working for Infosys & married to Dr. Swati, MD Pathology and Dr. Siddharth, who is aDental Surgen and working at Mumbai.

In one of Indias remote corners on India Pakistan border lies a deserted village of hardly a few hundred population within a sprawling fortification. The village is no other than Lakhpat, once a thriving port with daily revenue supposed to exceed one lac koris hence the name Lakhpat .

The landscape is barren. There are traces of natural erosions due to frequent earthquakes. One can see absolutely any one on the way and the road is absolutely peaceful . Lakhpat sits at the point where Kori creek meets the Great Rann of Kutch.

Lakhpat was built in the year1805 by Jamadar Fateh Muhammad , to defend frontiers of the state of Kutch from the encroachment of the Sindhies. The fortification erected by him enclosed the entire town within seven kilometre long fort wall,most of it stands even today. It is recorded that the fort was garrisoned by 50 Arabs and 150 native soldiers. And at that time the population was about 5000 persons composed of merchants mostly the Hindu merchants who had left Sindh to escape the tyranny of the Amirs.

It was the year 1819,an earthquake of high magnitude about 8 in Richter scale shocked Kutch. Lakhpat crumpled. The sea rolled up to Kori creek as far as Goongra river. The river shifted permanently to the west affecting both physical and economic landscape . Due to the permanent shift of the river the port was abandoned , in due corse of time Karachi developed into a thriving port and Lakhpat lost its glory as a thriving port bringing one lac Kori revenue daily. A town that had once a population of more than ten thousand stands almost deserted w i t h few fam i l i es s tay i ng t he re a t p resen t .Guru Nanak,the founder of Sikhism is said to have stayed in Lakhpat on his way to and from Mecca . The place where he stayed is converted into a Gurudwara which is renovated and is a place of pilgrimage. Another interesting building here is the mausoleum of Ghaus Mohammad, the mystic Pir, who had become a Fakir at the early age of twelve. The Kubo is a classic example of stone architecture with extremely intricate carvings. The Pirs body rests here with the other members of his family. The mausoleum stands besides a tank the water of which is believed to possess therapeutic properties , suppose to cure skin diseases.

The other attraction of Lakhpat is the Sayyed Pir no Kubo, mausoleum of Sayyed Pir Shah. It had nine domes with largest dominating the centre and eight other domes surrounding it. The entire mausoleum is built in stone with exquisite carvings and fine details along the doors and windows. The lat t iced ja l is are outstanding . Lakhpat fort must have been strong which can be made out from the fort wall which is in tact. There are four gates in the wall they are known as Nako in the lo cal language. Kathawalo Nako, Rann Nako , Ghebanshah Pir Nako and Bhuj varo Nako. Besides these gates there are three pedestrian Baris or windows in the fort wall.

When Lakhpat was a prosperous port, these gates have witnessed traffic of citizens, bullock carts loaded with goods and traders from different parts of the country as well as from foreign lands. It is interesting to know that at the mid night the

gates would be closed and the keys would be handed to a family, which was honoured as nakai'i, the keeper of the keys. The gates would open in the morning and those who had arrived after midnight used to stay in Dharamshala outside the gate or in the Khaak Chowk temple close to Paniwali Bari .

Fate Mohammad was a famous person from the Notiar community that migrated to Kachchh from Sindh many years ago. They were very much loyal to the Raos of Kachchh . Fate Mohammad built the fort of Lakhpat , his community migrated to Lakhpat and started working as carpenters, ship builders, and they became prosperous. It is very interesting to know that before becoming a great warrior and a loyal person of the Rao Fate Mohammad was a cattle herder. Once he was sleeping under a tree and a Sadhu saw him and told him one day he would attain greatness and he should meet Maharao of Kachchh and it so happened that Fate Mohammad did become a great warrior who rebuilt the fort of Lakhpat and expanded the potential of this port.

Close to Lakhpat is the village of Ber, home to prosperous Bhatias community. They were so wealthy that it is said they used gold vessels to draw water from wells. Holy man Musa Pir used to stay in this town of the Bhatias and till he was there, the Bhatias were safe , no one could attack the town and loot the riches of the Bhatias. When Musa went on Haj, Fate Mohammad attacked the town of the Bhatias . He got the wealth, how much? We are told that the way from the town of the Bhatias up to Lakhpat sparkled with the bullock carts loaded with gold and precious possessions of the Bhatias . Then came a saying in Kutchhi language Muso gayo hajj tade Fate Mohammad ke ayi sajj! It is said that the Rao who was very much disturbed by the action of Fate Mohammad did not ask him to send the loot to the treasury but to fortify the town of Lakhpat and protect Kachchh from the invaders from Sindh. The Mandvi bazaar of Lakhpat was once a very busy place with traders, caravans, camels carrying goods from the docked ships, merchants bargaining, haggling over prices, customs officers carefully calculating the dues for the goods and making noor or pawti or tickets or the traders at the Kathavaro Nako .

Here one can see the ruins of the customs house and one gets the idea how much business must have been carried out from this once prosperous port of Lakhpat . The building of the customs house is big with nicely carved windows and witnesses the prosperity of the town. At its height the customs house oversaw revenue of 180000/- Koris (the currency of the state of Kachchh ) a huge sum indeed !

It is said that the Mandvi bazaar and the area was so crowded with the traders and buyers that elbows would jostle for space this gave the bazaar the name Thootha Bazaar, bazaar with clashing elbows! Near this bazaar were the houses of the important trading families, the Bhatia houses naturally. In the picture one can see the ruins of the Havelis or palatial hoses of the Bhatias.

This is an interesting story for the Bhatias. Near Mandvi bazaar there used to be a Parliament House! And this was not a very huge building as one would imagine, but a modest and elegant house, the house of Pashmawala Bhatia family, who traded in Pashmina silk. For many years this house functioned as administrative overseer o f custom collector's office. The ruins suggest that it was a house with two floors. It was in the rooms and courtyard of this house that financial agreements were made and if needed be cancelled in front of these Bhatias, the Pashmawalas!

There are three Bhatia Havelis o r cluster of Bhatia Havelis. They are built in limestone of Lakhpat . The board outside the Haveli of Shymji Bhatia at Lakhpat is self explanatory . It says," Kachchhi Bhatias were active in trade in East Africa and Persian Gulf from the middle of the 17th century onwards and established a vast trading network , settling in all major port cities ringing the Indian Ocean. Many leading families owned their own cargo ships that routinely travelled to Karachi and Ali Port in Sindh. With industry in their blood, and business in their brains the intrepid Bhatias of Lakhpat did not only enrich Lakhpat , but went on later to build the ports of Mandvi and Mundra in Kachchh ." In the early 19th century the Bhatias built a Dharamshala just outside the fort where as mentioned earlier the travellers arriving in Lakhpat after midnight and could not enter the town because the gates were locked, used to stay for the remaining night. They built the Bhatiasar, talav where fresh water was collected for drinking purpose , the Talav was nearBhuj varo Nako.

As this land of Sayra as it was called then emptied into the Indus and as Lakhpat 's fortunes started to fade by the middle of the 19th century,a slow exodus began, with traders and seafarers started relocating their lives and skills to the ports of Mandvi , Mundra, further along the coast of Gujarat and eventually to Mumbai (Bombay).

Islands and yachts may have been the “it” destination for high-end tourists for years, but no more. The newest thing for the wealthy vacationer is a combination yacht and island: your own floating, move-able island.Floating islands have been in the works since people first imagined exploring the ocean, but technology is finally making that a reality. The Wally Island premiered four years ago as a kind of giant floating home that's 325 feet long, $200 million and comes with its own swimming pool. Zohra Sehgal

Zohra Sehgal (27 April 1912 – 10 July 2014) was an Indian actress and choreographer.Sehgal started her career as a dancer in Uday Shankar's troupe, performing in countries like the United States and Japan. She went on to appear in numerous Bollywood films as a character actress with a career-span of over 60 years.The famous films she was part of, include Neecha Nagar, Afsar (1946), Bhaji on the Beach (1992), The Mystic Masseur (2001), Bend It Like Beckham(2002), Dil Se.. (1998), Saawariya and Cheeni Kum (2007); and the TV series,The Jewel in the Crown (1984), Tandoori Nights

(1985–87), Amma and Family(1996). At the age of 90, she got the lead character around whom the story revolved in 2002 film Chalo Ishq Ladaaye, where she had stunt sequences and emotional scenes. Considered the doyenne of Indian theatre, she acted withIndian

People's Theatre Association (IPTA) and Prithviraj Kapoor's Prithvi Theatre for 14 years. She has also acted in English-speaking films such asBend It Like Beckham.She was awarded the Padma Shri in 1998, Kalidas Samman in 2001, and in 2004, the Sangeet Natak Akademi. India's National Academy for Music, Dance and Drama presented her with its highest award, the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship for lifetime achievement. She

]received the Padma Vibhushan, India's second-highest civilian honor, in 2010. She died in a New Delhihospital on July 10, 2014 due to cardiac arrest.She married Kameshwar Sehgal, a Hindu. There was initial opposition from her parents, but they eventually gave their approval for the union. They married on 14 August 1942. Jawaharlal Nehru was to attend the wedding reception, but he was arrested a couple of days earlier for supporting Gandhi's Quit India Movement.Zohra and Kameshwar had two children, Kiran and Pavan. Pavan Sehgal, who works for the WHO. Kiran is a highly reputed Odissi dancer.She described herself as an agnostic having been an atheist in her youth.In 2012, Kiran Sehgal, her daughter wrote Zohra's biography titled "Zohra Sehgal: Fatty".
