Quarterly Newsletter, Oct-Dec 2008, Issue 3For Private Circulation only
Some of these issues are very
well-depicted in ACORD’s street
play “Ek Boond Paani Ki” – if
you haven’t seen it yet, I would
urge you to get a show organized
for your colony, institution, or
community. I have also seen an
excellent motivational film by
ACORD and would urge you to
get this telecast through your
local cable operators – wherever
we are located or positioned, we
need to widely spread the
message of a cleaner Yamuna,
which should be the pride of the
capital of Delhi.
I commend ACORD for their
work under “Clean Yamuna
Manch” and hope you will wish to
engage in different ways for a
cleaner Yamuna in Delhi –
for updates do ask your
colleagues, friends and family
to visit the website
www.cleanyamunariver.org to learn what MCD with all its partners under YAP-II is doing for a cleaner Yamuna.
With particular reference to “Clean Yamuna Manch” by ACORD, I have noted the excellent outreach during the festive season that started in Delhi from October onwards. People were busy buying new products for their homes and offices, as well as to give gifts to others. More purchases and more celebrations have an after-effect, which is the resultant waste, whether in the form of bio-degradable or non-biodegradable materials. If you’ve been listening to ACORD’s radio programme “Kinare Kinare” every Friday, then you will have heard the reasons for Yamuna pollution. Not only household waste, but also huge amounts of industrial effluents and untreated waste and water end in Yamuna every day! We all need to take collective responsibility for this – how? First, let’s aim to reduce consumerism – we need to buy less, so that less waste is generated. Second, let’s put into practice the principle of 3Rs – reduce/recycle/re-use. Third, let’s get involved in some monitoring activities, such as which industrial units are showing good practice through use of effluent treatment plants, which groups use environment-friendly idols for immersion etc and then make an effort to learn from such practices. Getting the right infrastructure created by Delhi Jal Board is only one aspect of the solution, engaging with the people to promote change in behaviour and practice is the other important aspect of a joint s o l u t i o n t h r o u g h p u b l i c participation and awareness.
From the desk of Chairman,
ACORD
Dear Readers,
Guest Editorials help to add
information and new perspectives
on issues of concern. I am pleased
that for this Issue Commissioner
MCD, Mr KS Mehra, agreed to be
our Guest Editor. We welcome him
in this role and appreciate his
dedicated effort towards a clean
Yamuna. We look forward to
getting your views on this issue,
and do come for the Yamuna Rally
on 22 February!
Professor MDG Koreth
From our Guest Editor
Dear Readers,
I am delighted to be the Guest rdEditor for this 3 Issue of quarterly
newsletter being brought out by
ACORD. MCD is the Project
Implementing Agency for Yamuna
Action Plan , Ph-II and I am pleased
to confirm that most activities are
on schedule. I know this from
personal interaction with agencies
and NGOs who are involved with
the project in various ways with
MCD as I meet them once a month
– yes, there are points that need to
be resolved from time to time but I
am beginning to build a firm belief
that everyone involved has a real
commitment to action. Hence, my
confidence that YAP-II work by
MCD and our partners will deliver
results as per plans.

an academic or from the media,
you will find it useful to screen
the film for your colleagues and
others who are concerned about
River Yamuna in Delh i .
Needless to say, it is the 22 km
stretch of the river passing
through Delhi (from Wazirabad
barrage to Okhla) that is the most
polluted – and as concerned
citizens of Delhi we all have a
role to play. The film ends on a
note of hope... pollution will
reduce, interceptor technology
will make a difference, people’s
habits will change... but by
when?
“”Urine smells the same all over
the world” says Simran... “but
stinks more in Delhi” says
Deepak. “Yes, there was a time
when there were fish and
tortoises in Yamuna river in
Delhi, and people used to go for
bathing and swimming” says
Professor Jain. “MCD and Delhi
Jal Board will restore Yamuna to
its pristine glory. People also
need to use only eco-friendly
idols, not POP stuff.” Simran
wants to get involved in Yamuna
clean-up, Deepak resists and
wants to go back overseas...what
happens then?
The film is available on loan
from ACORD, so do please get in
touch with ACORD to arrange a
screening...and send us feedback
from your audience. You can also
arrange a telecast through your
local cable operator !

“Kinare Yamuna Ke” – a 22-minute motivat ional f i lm produced by ACORD. The purpose of this film is to raise Yamuna pollution issues in a storyline format to motivate citizens of Delhi to get involved in Yamuna clean-up, both directly and through change of habits and practices.
Concept, script, dialogue and co-direction have been done by President & CEO, ACORD, to ensure that key issues are presented in a format that can be easily understood by citizens of all age groups. Data was collected and validated from various sources. The film director and some members of the cast were contracted from Mumbai – a workshop on the rationale, content and issues of the film was held with them to understand the issues and act with credibility. This is an excellent film that can be shown widely. So, whether you are a teacher or a student, aprofessional, a lawyer or a
corporate manager, a government official or or from an NGO,
“Clean Yamuna Manch” is being
implemented by ACORD, as part
of “Public Participation &
Awareness” component of Yamuna
Action Plan – II being executed by
the MCD.
The superordinate goal of
ACORD’s mandate for “Clean
Yamuna Manch” is to create and
sustain “top of the mind”
awareness and major “mind-share”
for the Yamuna, its sources of
pollution and clean-up in the mind-
set of the people.
This quarterly Newsletter is part
of that effort and will bring to you
news, views, issues and action
updates.

“Ek Boond Paani Ki” – a street
play on River Yamuna in Delhi –
ACORD organised the maximum
number of shows during the festive
season at the puja pandals and Ram
Leela total 22 shows organized in
the quarter. This strategy helped
ensure that a large number of people
were able to see these shows and
reflect over their own role in
Yamuna pollution.
Some key points covered in the
show are:
Hthrowing garbage
Hopen defecation and urination
Hwaste from slaughter houses
Himmersion of idols with
chemical colours
Hdhobhi ghat usage
Hindustrial pollutants
An analysis of feedback from all 22
shows highlights that more than 75
per cent said that they had learnt a lot
about YAP II.
More than 98 per cent of the
respondents agreed that the play
showed peoples role in Yamuna
Pollution. Their views on what
pollutes the river are quite
insightful: According to them, main
pollutants are untreated sewage
allowed into river Yamuna (56 per
cent), garbage dumped into the river
(23 per cent), Murti visarjan (10 per
cent), disposal of dead bodies (3 per
cent), etc.
Most of them intend to stop
throwing poly-bags into the river (92
per cent), quite a few to stop murti
visarjan (51 per cent), give up
pushing dead bodies into the river
(67 per cent), stop dumping old
items in the river (90 per cent),
and dissuade butchers from
throwing waste in the river (41
per cent).
A vast majority even plan to
‘certainly’ persuade relatives (96
per cent), friends (88 per cent) and
neighbours (82 per cent) to avoid
those practices which pollute the
river.

As a follow-up to the Traning Needs Analysis reported in the last issue, ACORD designed and produced the “Yamuna River Training Manual” this is indeed a trainer’s kit, with 7 information and knowledge-based modules, and 1 module with 14 practical tools for trainers, such as film, jingles, quizzes etc. These modules were the key resource for the capacity-building workshops, to train the participants on the use of the Manual/Kit . A total of 55 participants from 19 NGOs attended the 3 one day workshops and gave excellent feedback on the design and content of the Manual and the workshop methodology. The modules are as follows:
Module 01: River Yamuna – legend, origin, profile and pollution: covers mythological aspects, Yamuna’s profile from Yamunotri, point and non-point sources of pollution.
Module 02: River Yamuna – Present Condition in Delhi: with emphasis on the 22kms from Wa z i r a b a d t o O k h l a , a n d comparison with the river as it was and why rivers are important for our sustenance and growth.

During this quarter ACORD organised two FGDs: with meat owners and media persons. Participants in both the FGDs agreed that:
HA clean Yamuna is vital for all, as it supplies drinking water to Delhi.
HYamuna pollution will have a negative impact on public health.
HIdol immersion can be done in a n y w a t e r b o d y, n o t necessarily in a flowing river. Delhi’s water bodies should be revived.
HPositive stories on YAP II should be identified and reported.
Focus Group Discussions:
HHoardings on the banks of Yamuna can be a good site for giving information.
H Yamuna ‘Puruskaar’ can be introduced to motivate people.
HACORD’s j ingles on Yamuna pollution can be played on different radio channels as they are in public interest.
HAwareness materials can be in Urdu/Panjabi also.

Most of them show keen interest in Yamuna clean-up in particular, and sometimes compare it with other rivers in India which are also getting polluted due to human activity.
