Oman & Bhatia Community

The Greek author Galazy has written in his book “Batiyas” about the shipping of Kutch in circa 150 and another Greek author Peryaksa has described the shipping of Kutch in circa 246. Oman's link with Indus Valley civilisation dates back to as early as 5000 B.C. and to the Bronze age (3500-1000BC). The Aryan civilisation had spread to Java, Sumatra, Borneo, Nicobar, Srilanka, Andaman, Afghanistan, Egypt, Cambodia, Indonesia, Siam(Thailand), Malaya(Malaysia), China, Philippines, Korea, Laos, Japan, Australia, Tibet, Nepal, Burma, Siberia, Germany, France, Portugal, Russia, Spain, Britain and this spread was possible due to courageous shipping men of India. Along with the merchandise, they did spread the great Sanatan Hindu Dharma and rich Indian culture.

Amongst 38 ports of Gujarat, Mandvi was a major port in Kutch. Though Kutch had 9 ports flourishing with trade, Mundra was another key port in Kutch. Bhatias of Mandvi and Mundra had ventured into international trade in their ships and available documents provide details for about 500 years of trade links with Oman (Majan). Yes, Bhatia Merchant Traders are conducting their business in Oman since last 500 years without any break.

Vat Bhima (Bhimani family) was customs collector for the Sultan of Oman and this contract remained with Bhatias for a very long period. The Bhatia businessmen had won the trust of Omanis by their honesty, integrity and nobility. Local Omanis used to keep their money and valuables with Bhatia businessman. Values cherished and practiced by the bhatias have earned them a respectable and trustworthy position in the global business communities. Wherever they have gone, bhatias are successful entrepreneurs. The researchers have taken up studies on Bhatia businessmen of East Africa and Oman as to how they were/are successful despite an altogether different culture, language, food habits, clothing and religion from the natives. After earning a good fortune, they have whole heartedly donated for the welfare of local people by building schools, medical centres, community centres, libraries, colleges, temples, roads and helped during calamities.

Bhatias along with Hindus in Oman have established Hindu Mahajan Association that organises various cultural programs and celebrates all the Hindu festivals. They have established Shree Krishna Temple (Haveli) at Muscat and Shiva Temple & Hindu Mahajan Quarters at Muscat.

The Bhatia entrepreneurs from earlier days till date who have carved out their presence and success in Oman are –
