For the Love of a Highland Hometraces the early nineteenthcentury struggle of five youngFraser brothers to save theirfather’s impoverished estate inthe Scottish Highlands. Theirexperiences in Guyana and Indiatake place during turbulenttimes – the Napoleonic Wars, the anti-slavery movement, the demise of the MughalEmpire, the Anglo-Nepal war and the changing life in the post-Culloden Highlands.

Against this dramaticbackground, the book alsodocuments the lives of the familyat home, drawing extensively ondiaries and copious lettersbetween the boys and theirparents in Scotland. Only onebrother comes home, making thepreservation of the hundreds ofletters, which travelled halfwayround the world, even moreremarkable.

Dion Alexander

The Potter’s Tale is the accountof an impressionable youngman’s journey of discovery onColonsay, one of the smallest, and most remote inhabitedislands in the Hebrides. With his wife, Jane, and baby Danny,Di Alexander came to live, work, and immerse himself in the lifeof the island during the 1970s.He set up business and quicklybecame known as ‘the Potter’,island custom attaching theGaelic name Photter to othermembers of the family. Thismemoir records the aspects of Colonsay life which left their lasting mark upon him: the characters, language andapproach to living in what wasthen still a predominantlyGaelic-speaking community, his thoughts on keeping a small remote communitydominated by an estate alive and viable under modernpressures. With a foreword byProfessor Jim Hunter, the bookis an autobiography which iswoven with a deep love of themagical place that is Colonsay.
