Low Level LuminairesThis extensive line of Low Level Luminaires hasbeen designed to provide specifiers with a broadspectrum of lighting solutions for pedestrianareas. Each Luminaire provides unique featuresfor brightness control, vandal resistance, andarchitectural compatibility. In addition, each fixturehas an aesthetic relationship to various Kim polemounted luminaires, following the Kim Theory ofRelativity as a matrix for providing the properscale and visual logic to the overall outdoorlighting scheme.

Since Low Level Luminaires can be subject tovandalism in unsecured areas, most of thesefixtures have been engineered to provide superiorstrength through extra thick components, andbase-to-grade connections that withstandconsiderable force. Outstanding performance isprovided by reflector and/or lens designs thatdelivers broad illumination with low brightness. In combination, the performance, design, andruggedness of these Kim luminaires is unmatchedin the lighting industry.

PEDESTRIAN ZONEAs you leave the parking lot and transition to pedestrian areas, poles should decrease in height to 10' - 16'. In addition, luminaires should decrease in scale, and can have more decorative features to be appreciated at the pedestrian level.

SITE / ROADWAY ZONEParking lots and roadways require luminaires on 20' - 40' poles to efficiently light these large areas. Therefore, this lighting becomes dominant, and sets the design and style for all other lighting as you progress towards the building.

As Distance to Architecture Decreases, Luminaire Height and Scale Also Decreases

The Relationship of Outdoor Lighting to Site and Architecture

KIM THEORY OF RELATIVITYThe purpose of this guideline is to bring a cohesive look to outdoorl ighting, maximizing l ighting eff iciency while preserving thearchitectural experience. Simply stated, the Kim Theory of Relativitysays “Poles belong in parking lots. And, once you leave the parkinglot, the outdoor lighting should become less and less conspicuous until it becomes an integral part of the architecture.” In addition, theluminaire style and geometry should remain consistent. If this guideline is utilized, the outdoor lighting will enhance the site andarchitecture, bringing unity to the outdoor lighting scheme.

LANDSCAPE / PATH ZONENear the building, luminaires should begin to disappear, blending into the landscape and hardscape elements.

BUILDING / PERIMETER ZONENo pole mounted luminaires should ever be used near the building, as they will dominate the architecture. The only exception would be the use of decorative luminaires to delineate entrances to the structure. Building mounted, architecturally compatible fixtures should be almost invisible.

Features Compact Bollards

OpticsThe success of the Compact Bollard’s performance is due to full overlapping louvers which provide total source cutoff above horizontal. A soft glow from the louvers provides sufficient vertical illumination for surrounding plants or pedestrians.

The glass globe is completely gasketed and utilizes prismatics to optimize and control the light. With recommended coated lamps,a smooth wash of light is achieved with no shadows from the vertical supports. Electrical ComponentsAll HPF ballasts and components are factory mounted and prewired to a single bracket for field installation within the riser.

Anchor BaseTo ensure fixture strength and stability in adverse conditions, the base is heavy cast aluminum and secures the riser with four flush stainless steel sockethead screws finished to match fixture.

Louver AssemblyIndividual louver components, top, and base are constructed of heavy die-cast aluminum, connected as one unit with four concealed stainless steel screws within the vertical supports.

For relamping, these screws are removed and the interlocking louvers lifted as one unit, providing access to the glass enclosure and lamp.

Louver base is die-cast aluminum and secures internally to the riser with four concealed stainless steel screws.

Extruded Aluminum Riser5" diameter .125" thick aluminum extrusion available in two lengths for overall fixture heights of 24" and 32". Vertical groove detail aligns with the vertical fixture supports and serves to strengthen and unify the design. Thick internal ribs at the mounting screw locations provide increased strength.

INSTALLATIONBollards are installed with anchor bolts imbedded in a poured-in-place concrete footing (by others). Internal anchor base is leveled prior to placing the riser. When installing in soil or landscaping, the concrete footing should be raised at least 2K" to avoid corrosive contact between fixture and soil or standing water.

Dual Function LuminaireVRB2 and VRB4 Horizontal louvers provide 210° of cutoff down-lighting, and vertical louvers provide 150° of non-cutoff accent lighting.Designed for lighting walkways where adjacent building facades, wallsor landscaping may be enhanced by a vertical wash of light. Fixturesshould be viewable from the walkway only. See page 10.

Single Function LuminaireVRB1 and VRB3 Horizontal louvers provide 360° of down-lightingwith total lamp source cutoff above 90° horizontal. Designed forlighting walkways, entrances, courtyards, and landscaped areaswhere fixtures are viewable from all directions. See page 10.

Hydro-formed ReflectorHydro-formed reflector redirects light down onto pathways, awayfrom viewers’ eyes. Special design features direct light around thelamp to increase illuminance while eliminating streaks and shadowsin the beam pattern.

Fluted Glass RefractorPrecision molded tempered glass refractor spreads light evenly inthe beam pattern and eliminates shadows from the luminaire’ssupport structure.

ConstructionThe GEM™ lighted head is constructed of die-cast aluminum, with amolded glass refractor. Four captive, stainless steel fasteners areconcealed from view, yet provide easy access for routinemaintenance. The lens is not disturbed during re-lamping. The fixture head is secured to the shaft with heavy-duty stainlesssteel rods.

Aluminum shaft bollards are installed with anchor bolts in a poured-in-place footing (by others). Internal anchor base is leveled prior to installing the shaft.

Site Lightforms® FeaturesFull Cutoff Optics in SL1 - SL4For projects requiring full cutoff pole-mounted luminaires for lighttrespass or dark-sky considerations, the SL1 - SL4 maintains thistheme at the pedestrian level. Each SL fixture has an optical moduleengineered to produce an asymmetric light distribution using ahorizontal lamp, and flat tempered glass lens. Because of the lowmounting height, coated HID lamps are recommended for optimumuniformity of illumination.

Heavy-Wall Cast Aluminum HeadsKim SL fixtures are specifically designed and engineered tocombine contemporary form with rugged vandal-resistantconstruction. Low level luminaires are often subject to abusebecause of their proximity to pedestrian traffic. To combat this, allfixture heads are heavy-wall one-piece aluminum castings. SL models use concealed mechanical head-to-shaft connections forgreater strength and clean detailing. SL1 - SL4 models use flattempered glass lenses, and SL5 and SL6 models use flatpolycarbonate lenses.

One-Piece Extruded Aluminum ShaftsTo achieve a clean sharp-cornered architectural appearance withsuperior strength, all SL shafts are one-piece heavy-wall aluminumextrusions. Integral mounting tracks are incorporated for mechanicalattachment of the head and base, which provides superior strengthover welding.

Low Profile, High Strength BaseThe SL mounting base is unique in the lighting industry, combiningsuperior strength with a low-profile design. The shaft-to-baseattachment is by concealed bolts threaded into the shaft extrusion.Kim tests show this method to be twice the strength of a weldedconnection. Anchor bolts are provided with couplings, allowingstandard black stainless steel bolts to secure the base andeliminate unsightly protruding anchor bolts.

Installation Details Site Lightforms®

Anchor Bolts and TemplateAll SL models are suppliedcomplete with anchor bolts andrigid template. The unique anchorbolt system employs femalethreaded couplings that allowthe standard black stainless steelbolts to secure the base,eliminating unsightly protrudinganchor bolts.

Installation in Planted AreasWhen SL fixtures are to be installedin planted areas, slightly elevate the base to avoid prolongedsubmersion during heavy rains orirrigation. Allow ground cover orshrubbery to conceal the base. In this application, the templateelevation must allow for any top soilor mulch that will be added. The SL template is the same sizeas the fixture base, and can beused to shape the concrete footingto blend with the base casting. A carefully leveled template willprovide a smooth flat mountingsurface and a level fixture.

Installation in Paved AreasSL fixtures are easily installed inpaved areas with an option of astandard or concealed base detail.For standard base installations, the concrete footing is poured withthe template at finished grade level.While the SL base casting is verylow in profile, it can also be totallyconcealed by paving up to thefixture shaft. Although a concealedbase detail is aesthetically veryclean, it must be remembered that future removal will be difficult if required.
