FOREWORDSCONTENTSDuring 2013/2014 Action Cancer celebrated its 40th Anniversary, quite a milestone for a local Northern Ireland charity wholly dependent on the support and generosity of local people.

There is no doubt that without the commitment of our staff, volunteers, local group members, corporate supporters and many individuals, we would not be in the excellent position we are in today. To everyone who has helped and supported the charity, thank you so much. Your hard work and contribution are never taken for granted.

I firmly believe that the wonderful support we receive is down to the services the charity provides, services that are proven to make a real difference in 'Saving Lives Supporting People'.

As you will read in this Annual Review, 2013/2014 was yet another excellent year, with the number of women screened for breast cancer, the number of people in receipt of health checks and, the number of therapeutic support sessions made available, all at record levels.

This year was the first of our 3 year Corporate Plan 'For Now and the Future'. I am pleased to report that all of the actions and targets set for the year were achieved and many positive changes made to our services, our fundraising activities and our internal processes and procedures.

As you read through this Annual Review I would hope that you are encouraged and inspired to continue to help Action Cancer deliver on its Mission of 'saving lives and supporting people in Northern Ireland affected by cancer'.

ChairmanNorman Carson

Following on from previous years, 2013/2014 was another very good year for Action Cancer. It was a year of change, innovation, and new developments, a year when the number of people using our prevention and support services was the highest ever, an online appointment booking system was successfully introduced, income generated through our retail shops exceeded £1.0m and a surplus of £89,541 was transferred to reserves.

Our 2013-16 Strategic Plan sets out clearly what we plan do and how and when we plan to achieve it. Whilst we are very focused on ensuring the 'What' and 'When' are achieved, the 'How' is also of uttermost importance to us. As a 'Values' led charity that 'puts people first' we try as far as possible to assess and

measure every action against our Values. This is particularly true in relation to the recruitment, retention, training and development of our staff and volunteers. We were therefore delighted when in December 2013 we were awarded Investors in People at Gold Standard.

We are always looking to the future and considering how to provide our current services better and more efficiently, assessing new service opportunities, developing innovative fundraising activities and improving our systems and controls. Much work was undertaken during the year; our IT system for the management of client information was further developed, new fundraising events were held including a most successful Ladies Lunch, three new

shops were opened in Belfast, Cookstown and Lurgan and, new services and interventions developed including the introduction of Acupuncture, Bowen and Emmett Techniques and the 'Action Man Club'.

Such a year just doesn’t happen but is achieved through the hard work, effort and support of many dedicated people. So, thank you to everyone for making Action Cancer the charity it is today.

We look forward to building on the success of 2013/2014 so that we may make our Vision of a future where cancer risk is reduced, cancers detected early, successfully treated and the people impacted supported and empowered, a reality.

DETECTION

BREAST SCREENING AT ACTION CANCERIt has been another record breaking year at Action Cancer with 8,296 women screened. We have extended opening hours to include early morning clinics from 8am and late clinics ending at 8pm, this flexibility has facilitated working women who can now book appointments for before or after work.

In October 2013 we had a very successful inspection from The Regulation and Quality Improvement Authority (RQIA) who are Northern Ireland's independent health and social care regulator. They have the responsibility for assessing compliance with and enforcing the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations (Northern Ireland) IR(ME)R, to protect staff, visitors and service users against the dangers of ionising radiation in medical settings. The inspectors examined and reported upon our processes and procedures in place around the management and control of our screening service. They concluded that practice in Action Cancer is in keeping with the principles of IR(ME)R. The radiological practices were found to be safe and effective and many areas of good practice were highlighted and commended. No enforcements or requirements were given in the report.

BCAM 2013 We launched a new online booking system in time for Breast Cancer Awareness Month; this has been a most significant development for all at Action Cancer but in particular for breast screening. Women can now book their screening appointment from their phone, tablet or computer in minutes at anytime day or night. With most people leading such busy lifestyles, not having to phone during office hours has proved very popular and encouraged women aged 40-49 who had never been for screening to come forward. During the launch month of October 1,280 appointments were made this way alone!NEW SPONSORSHIPS FOR BIG BUS

2013/2014 proved to be another successful year for the Big Bus. A total of 211 visits were completed over the course of the year, providing 3,641 breast screenings and 3,005 health checks.

We were delighted to welcome SDC Trailers, Irish Waste, A One Tyres and Manfreight Limited as new supporters of the Big Bus. SDC Trailers have provided ongoing servicing, maintenance and repairs for the Big Bus trailer since December 2013, similar to the partnership with Dennison Commercials, who look after the BIG BUS cab’s maintenance and servicing. A One Tyres will be providing free tyre cover, Irish Waste are providing environmentally friendly waste disposal and Manfreight Limited will now provide free overnight accommodation and washing facilities.

The Big Bus will celebrate its eighth birthday in September 2014, these new partnerships, along with the continued support from main sponsor retail group SuperValu and its independent retail partners will ensure that it is kept roadworthy and ready to deliver its life saving services across the county for many more years to come.

PREVENTION

WHY WEIGHT Female staff in Child Support Agency Belfast, Cookstown District and Ballymoney Borough Councils took part in Action Cancer’s 12 week weight management and healthy lifestyle programme. Each group received full body composition analysis and regular activity sessions. The lunch time programme empowered the women to make positive changes to improve their long term health while reducing their risk of diseases such as cancer, diabetes and heart disease.

Siobhan Stewart from Ballymoney Borough Council said,

“As a local employer we have a focus

on the health and well being of our

ACTION MAN CLUB There have been exciting developments within Health Promotion’s Action Man programme. Based on positive feedback from participants we have extended our direct contact time. We have also strengthened the information and advice available in the 12 week programme by producing an attractive and accessible publication that educates and motivates men to make lifestyle choices to improve their health and wellbeing. This resource book is full of very simple and practical advice on the importance of a healthy diet, regular exercise and contains a wealth of information on the importance of self examination as well as how to do this.

This programme has been delivered in workplaces across Northern Ireland to positive acclaim and repeat bookings.

Participant quote;

“I am fit and healthy, regularly exercise

and have a balanced diet, or at least I

thought I did. Only as a result of this

programme did I realise that I had high

cholesterol and a high resting heart rate

so I was able to take corrective action;

without the programme, I would have

been unaware of these issues and they

may have worsened over time.”

SCHOOLS2013/2014 was another busy year for our Primary and Secondary Health Action Programmes and our Health Action Heroes Puppet Shows, supported by Centra. Delivered to over 18,000 children and young people these programmes present health messages in fun and interactive ways, explaining the importance of exercise and eating healthily, the dangers of smoking and how to be safe in the sun. Our Lunch Box sessions also supported parents through practical hands on learning and taster sessions to understand the importance of packing a healthy lunch for their growing children.

employees. Last year a group of our

male employees completed the Action

Man programme with a number of

participants being able to achieve

weight loss, reduce cholesterol and

blood pressure levels and raise

awareness of male cancers. We are

delighted that this pilot for ladies has

had the same positive impact on our

female staff with tremendous results,

losing a total of almost six stone.”

SUPPORT

THERAPEUTIC SUPPORT SERVICESIn 2013/2014 we continued to offer counselling and complementary therapy to people affected by cancer. Over the 12 months we delivered 1,238 counselling sessions (195 clients) and 1,409 complementary therapy sessions (318 clients) between our Belfast and Derry/Strabane venues. We delivered 5 Positive Living Programmes over the year and they continued to prove really beneficial.

“The Positive Living Programme proved invaluable in helping me explore my current situation and begin to focus on the future. I feel over the two day programme I moved from 'survival' mode to 'living' mode. The activities were at a gentle pace that was perfect to allow genuine support and understanding in response to the needs of the individuals and the group. At the end of the two days I felt grateful on many different levels and the shift in my mindset has been long lasting.”

Mary Mallon, PLP participant

NEW SERVICES TO AID PAIN AND SYMPTOM CONTROLWe introduced a number of new services to support people cope with pain and symptoms resulting directly from a cancer diagnosis or from the stress/worry of caring for someone with cancer.

• Acupuncture can help with a range of symptoms including: pain and restrictions in movement; nausea and vomiting; shortness of breath; hot flushes; dry mouth; fatigue and anxiety and stress.

• Bowen and Emmett therapies – these therapies involve the application of light finger pressure or rolling movements at specific points on the body which help change muscle tension and action and help relieve pain and restrictions.

Clients who have availed of these services have reported that they are enjoyable, relaxing and beneficial to aid relief of some symptoms, and improve overall quality of life.

HEREDITARY CANCER SUPPORT This year we have begun to offer additional support to people undergoing genetic cancer testing. Genetic testing can often be a very stressful process. Our therapeutic services help clients deal with the psychological impacts of the testing process as well as the aftermath of getting the results. In providing this service we have been working closely with Professor Patrick Morrison, leading medical consultant in genetics. Professor Morrison received an MBE for his services in this field this year – we congratulate him on this.

LISTENING EAR 2013/2014 saw Action Cancer working in close partnership with local Health Trusts, Community Organisations and Schools to deliver our accredited training programme that will assist in supporting those affected by a cancer diagnosis.

Our partnership with the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust allowed us to train staff and volunteers ranging from oncology nurses and occupational therapists to volunteer therapists and Welfare Rights volunteers. The training has enhanced their current skills allowing them to offer suitable support and guidance and also to be able to refer to other services for additional support, including Action Cancer. We are now

offering the Train the Trainer qualification to key people within these groups so they can continue to offer this training within the Trust.

We also trained staff and volunteers from community groups as part of our North West Partnership and Listening Ear will be available in 5 different venues that are accessed regularly by the community, increasing our opportunities for referrals.

Pictured Above: Shimna Integrated College, Newcastle are now able to offer Listening Ear training to staff and pupils facilitated by their own trainers as 3 staff members were the first to be accredited in our Train the Trainer Qualification (level 3 OCN).

ANNUAL REVIEW 2013/2014

CHANGING ATTITUDESBREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTHDuring Breast Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM) in October 2013, our sixth year in partnership with Gordons Chemists, we set a new record, encouraging 3,200 local women to come forward for a breast screening.

Action Cancer is the only charity in the UK and Ireland to offer breast screening to asymptomatic women aged 40 – 49 and over 70, those who fall outside the NHS screening age range (50 – 70). For every 1,000 women screened an average of six cancers are detected. This means that as a result of the BCAM campaign, 19 cancers will be detected that otherwise may have gone unnoticed and 3,181 women will be given peace of mind.

Six women who have used the breast screening service volunteered to tell their breast cancer stories, on the theme of ‘early detection saves lives’ and highlighting the new online appointment booking system. These Ambassadors challenged women via daily and regional press not to be complacent about their health but to be proactive and go to Action Cancer for a breast screening either on board the Big Bus or at Action Cancer House in Belfast. In addition an outdoor advertising, radio and for the first time television campaign resulted in a 23% increase on 2012’s campaign figures.

Pictured Below: Ambassadors who shared their breast cancer stories for BCAM 2013.

MEN’S HEALTHThroughout the year 2013/2014 we challenged men across Northern Ireland to shake off complacency and change their attitudes towards their own health and well being.

Every year in Northern Ireland there are approximately 4,000 men diagnosed with cancer - that’s 11 men every day. Although men are 16% more likely to develop cancer than women, they are 40% more likely to die from the disease. This has been attributed to poor lifestyle choices, such as eating an unhealthy diet and taking less exercise, and reluctance to discuss personal health matters. By not monitoring their health men are at higher chance of not detecting cancer or other serious conditions at an early and, hopefully, more treatable stage.

Our Action Man Campaign in June encouraged men to be more aware of their general health and to book an M.O.T. Health Check with Action Cancer. The campaign also aimed to highlight awareness of the signs and symptoms of male specific cancers such as testicular and prostate cancers. Rugby Star Chris Henry supported PR for this campaign as well as Action Cancer clients

who shared their cancer stories. In addition to radio adverts, an outdoor advertising campaign featuring Eddie Irvine encouraged men to take a positive step and contact Action Cancer for an assessment of their health.

Our M.O.T. Health Checks, which are available all year round, incorporate a number of assessments including blood pressure, cholesterol, blood glucose, facial skin analysis, peak flow measurements and body composition analysis, as well as lifestyle advice and information on male specific cancers. These checks do not diagnose cancer but aim to increase awareness of current health and the importance of early detection.

RAISING AWARENESS

TV ADVERTS The 2013/2014 year saw the creation of Action Cancer’s first ever television adverts. Featuring two of our Ambassadors, the adverts aired first on UTV in September 2013. This coincided with the launch of our online appointment booking service.

Ambassadors Inez Fowler from Kircubbin and Aiden Early from Benburb were interviewed about their cancer journeys whist sitting on a red

chair against a white background at UTV Studios, Ormeau Road Belfast. The footage was then edited down into two 30 and 10 second clips.

Inez’s breast cancer was detected at Action Cancer House in May 2011. The focus of her TV advert was to promote our breast screening service for women aged 40-49 and 70 plus. Inez’s powerful message of "Action Cancer saved my life" struck a chord and prompted many women to come forward for screening. The first showing of the breast screening

advert was aired on a Saturday night following the first episode of the new X Factor series. Over the course of that weekend 50 women booked an appointment online.

Aidan was diagnosed with bone cancer in February 2011 and came into contact with Action Cancer via our two day Positive Living Programme when it came to Portadown. Following this support Aidan was keen to communicate the message in his advert that, “if you have had a cancer diagnosis, seek the help that’s out there from Action Cancer, whether it’s counselling or complementary therapy, that is going to make all the difference to your recovery.”

Thank you to Inez and Aidan for sharing their personal stories which helped raise awareness throughout Northern Ireland and encouraged many women and men to avail of our free services.

Pictured Left: Breast cancer Ambassador Inez Fowler is featured on a UTV advert to highlight our breast screening service.

NEWS UPDATEAction Cancer’s News Update is delivered to approximately 28,000 homes in Northern Ireland twice a year, in September and February. The 8 page publication communicates the latest news to our service users and supporters province wide who subscribe to the News Update. This is an effective tool for Action Cancer to raise awareness and funds getting the word out there to our supporters about service developments as well as fundraising initiatives.

Pictured Below: Action Cancer’s News Update which is posted to our supporters on a bi-annual basis.

ANNUAL REVIEW 2013/2014

INVESTING IN STAFFThis year Action Cancer were reassessed by Investors in People in a number of key areas including Learning and Development, Recognition and Reward, and Involvement and Empowerment.

We were accredited at Gold Standard - a very coveted accolade which less than 5% of all organisations in the UK are awarded. This is testament to our continued commitment to nurturing talent and developing our staff to 'offer innovative services that are professionally delivered by people working together who are empowered, passionate, committed and valued'.

Throughout the year 69% of training was developed and delivered internally with a focus on the continued development of excellent customer

service skills for new staff, and on Action Cancer’s ‘Corporate Social Responsibility Approach’ (CSR) which supports the delivery of our CSR Strategy.

31% of training was externally provided. Qualifications were awarded in a broad range of areas including Patient Manual Handling, Emmett Practitioner, Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS) Level 3 Award, First Aid, Fire Training, and an Accreditation by the Association for Coaching.

The PTLLS Level 3 Award – Group Training Qualification is an essential course for anyone training or educating others. Designed to contribute towards the skills, knowledge and understanding of the professional standards for trainers it was delivered to the Health Promotion team. The course was delivered through group work sessions and assessed via assignments and practice based

INVESTING IN VOLUNTEERS AND MEMBERSCOMMUNITY GROUPSThe Action Cancer groups have been working extremely hard raising funds for the charity for almost forty years, with groups spanning all of Northern Ireland. The money which members bring in goes towards funding for all our services; promoting our profile and encouraging others to use the range of services from breast screening to complementary therapy.

All of our group members, from Cookstown to Donaghadee have formed strong friendships and many members develop new skills. Meetings are informal with an open door to new members and the activities and initiatives range from sponsored

walks, car boot sales, quizzes, bingo events, dances, bag packs, street collections and coffee mornings.

We have recruited members to form a new East Belfast Action Cancer Group in early 2014. Lots of buzz in East Belfast, with lots of fundraising ideas in the pipeline so watch this space!

Pictured Left: Gareth Kirk with the East Belfast Group

“I joined the new Group in East Belfast, basically because I wanted to support Action Cancer. I feel that their support services which help other cancer survivors like myself are extremely important, and I wanted to raise money to support those that are in the position I was. The Group itself has started really strongly, and I feel that as a Group should be, all of its members are extremely supportive of each other. I’m very hopeful of our future.”

Miraflor Onella, Group Secretary

micro-teaches which covered course design to evaluation, the teaching cycle, understanding roles, responsibilities and relationships in inclusive education and training and understanding assessment in education and training.

"I thoroughly enjoyed the PTLLS course; it was very interactive and informative. The training we received was extremely valuable and as a team we will be able to apply a lot of this new knowledge to develop our Health Promotion programmes and enhance the delivery of key cancer prevention messages."

Marie McAuley, Health Promotion Officer

RETAILWhat a busy year 2013/14 has been for Action Cancer retail and the most successful year to date with retail income of over £1million! This could not have been achieved without all the hard work put in by the store managers and their volunteer teams in what was still a tough trading climate.

We opened three new boutique clothing stores, on Market Street, Lurgan, James Street, Cookstown and Andersonstown Road, Belfast, bringing our presence on the high street to 15 stores. We also began a major store refurbishment programme and invested in a new fit out of our store in Coleraine adding to our chain of boutique outlets and with refurbishment planned soon for our

stores in Carrickfergus and on the Cregagh Road, Belfast all of our existing clothing outlets will be rebranded with our boutique look.

Our partnership with Business in the Community meant our first Shops’ Challenge event was a fantastic success raising £65,000.

Dillon Bass won the overall event and a team from the Public Prosecution Service in L/Derry won the Judges’ Choice Award by raising over £14,000.A great year all round!

Pictured Right: Apprentice star Jim Eastwood at the Shops’ Challenge Boardroom Showdown

RESEARCH AND EVALUATIONCOUNSELLING AND COMPLEMENTARY THERAPY SUCCESSThe evaluation of Action Cancer’s counselling and complementary therapy services was completed during the year. Between January 2007 and December 2012, anyone accessing these services were asked to take part in our evaluation, i.e. complete surveys at 3 different points; 1st just before starting their therapies, 2nd immediately at the end of the therapy and the 3rd was 3 months after the end of their therapy. Based on a large survey collected over 6 years there were a number of important findings:

• Before therapy, carers/family members had similar poor quality of life as those who were diagnosed with cancer, highlighting how a cancer diagnosis has a wider impact on those close to the person diagnosed.

• After accessing Action Cancer’s counselling or complementary therapy, there was a significant increase in quality of life.

• For those who accessed 6 sessions or more, these increases were maintained 3 months later.

• There was a significant improvement in sleep after accessing counselling or complementary therapy.

“Fantastic Service. Has turned my feelings around and helped me learn to cope with the difficulties and trauma I have experienced. Thank you so much.”

“I am in awe of what you do and think that it is every bit as important as research into cures- many many thanks!”

“I wasn't expecting the treatment and therapists to be so talented, kind, helpful and brilliant at their jobs. My experiences with Action Cancer were excellent.”
