and learn how partnerships and local cooperation with international agencies can help your chamber serve its member companies, and help them to seize new opportunities, contributing to responsible and sustainable development.

Preferential Certificates of OriginThe rapid increase in free trade agreements has been one of the striking developments of the globalized world economy. This increase has led to the rising importance of chambers of commerce in issuing preferential certificates of origin (COs). Since 1898 chambers have had a proven track record for their neutrality and competence in issuing COs. Learn about the roles and responsibilities of chambers in issuing these advantageous and practical documents.

Social networks – expanding chamber reachBy 2014 more than 20% of businesses will use social networks as their primary means of communications. Many major corporations are already integrated with social networking sites, giving users access to their e-mails, contacts and calendars revolutionizing the way we conduct business. Technology savvy small businesses embracing the use of social networks and smartphones hold the key to a wealth of new opportunities, including increased productivity and online collaboration. Will technology and globalization undermine or empower the “old” chamber network?

Speed networking – develop your regional connections Too many people, too little time? Come and experience for yourself this dynamic new method of meeting business contacts that will maximize your exposure to new markets and expand your pool of vendors in minimum time. These timed sessions will give you an invaluable opportunity to exchange information on professional backgrounds and business goals. Transnational chamber leaders will set the scene on their economies and facilitate your connections with chambers and business across the region.

Africa and the Middle EastThe Middle East is best known for its oil industry, but most countries in the region have greatly diversified their economies in recent years. Africa is the second

largest and third most populous continent after Asia, with an estimated population of one billion, and has a large and untapped consumer base.

AmericasBusiness opportunities abound in the Americas, spanning from the USA and other countries governed by the NAFTA trade alliance, to the region of Latin America and the Caribbean. California is one of the 10 largest economies in the world with a gross state product of over US$1.8 trillion. Many Latin American countries are high-income and have a per capita GDP greater than China.

EuropeEurope is an economic powerhouse producing more than 21% of the world’s total economic output. The EU is the largest exporter and importer of goods and services, with one currency uniting 16 member countries into “a single economy”. Europe is also host to many important regional economic zones, from the Baltic Sea in the north, to the Mediterranean north/south and to the east with the Black Sea zone.

Asia PacificEven at the height of the economic crisis, Asia and the Pacific displayed its resilience. The region is home to the world’s fastest growing economies, China and India, and to the richest and poorest citizens of the world. Densely populated, the region accounts for 61% of the world’s population. It is responsible for more than a quarter of the world’s total merchandise trade and commands almost a quarter of trade in services.

New economy, challenges and opportunitiesWhat is the outlook for the world economy? What surprises lie in store? Having survived the worst recession in decades, companies are learning to operate in a changed economic environment. The return of sustained economic growth remains fragile in many parts of the world. The economic crisis may have put the brakes on globalization but international economic integration is set to continue, bringing a greater role for government and lower long-term growth expectations. In this session we ask: how can global demand be rebalanced so that it relies less on mature OECD economies and more on domestic spending in emerging economies?

Building a green economyGreen economic growth promises a wealth of opportunities – from employment generation and new business and trade ventures, to innovation and competition stimulation. To make the most of these opportunities and facilitate a seamless transition to a green economy, business and governments must cooperate. But what do market mechanisms, like carbon markets and taxes, really mean? To realize these opportunities, business and government will need to work together. Join us to discover how business is capitalizing on green economy opportunities and how your chamber can ensure maximum support for SMEs?

Corporate responsibility for peace and prosperity Fact: peace is more conducive to long-term economic development than war. Opportunity: business can play a decisive role in promoting global peace through trade and investment, employment and wealth creation and corporate responsibility. Responsible corporate practices build win-win relationships not only between business partners but also with their respective communities. Examining the role of chambers and businesses, and featuring an overview of the Oslo Business for Peace Awards, this insightful session will demonstrate the positive correlation between peace, economic development and business. Chambers of commerce and businesses of all sizes have a role to play in explaining the positive relationship between peace, economic development and business.

Tomorrow’s labour forceTo remain competitive in the new world economy adaptability is requisite. Ageing workforces, expanding or declining populations, skills shortages, disproportionate youth population, rapid urbanization – all impact labour forces, economic growth and enterprise development. While your role as a chamber leader is vital for ensuring that governments and businesses work together to secure well-educated and accessible labour, the range of variables that affect tomorrow’s workforce can seem overwhelming. Help is at hand in this session as chamber experts, government and business deliberate the impact of technological changes, the impact of trade and foreign direct investment on employment, migration and labour mobility for an integrated world economy.
