Oregon Bariatric Center Minimally invasive procedures. Shorter length of stay. More than 600 patients have completed surgical weight- loss programs at the Oregon Bariatric Center since it opened in 2006. Designated a Center of Excellence by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, the Oregon Bariatric Center meets the highest quality and safety standards, offering comprehensive services to patients and closely tracking and analyzing data for ongoing improvement. SURGICAL PROCEDURES Unless otherwise indicated by complicating factors, the following procedures are performed laparoscopically for lower risk of infection, faster healing, shorter length of stay and less scarring. Adjustable Gastric Banding Adjustable gastric banding, or LAP-BAND, uses a silicone elastomer band placed around the upper part of the stomach to simulate a small stomach pouch that can hold only a small amount of food. Indications When determining the ideal candi- date for bariatric surgery, the Oregon Bariatric Center follows guidelines established by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery: Patients should be at least 100 pounds overweight, have a BMI of 40 or higher, and have no alcohol, drug or smoking problems. Patients with a BMI of 35 to 39.9 may be candidates if they have one or more co-morbidities such as high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol or heart disease. Note: The Food and Drug Administration recently approved LAP-BAND for a broader panel of patients, including those with a BMI of 30 or above with accompa- nying obesity-related co-morbidities. Roseburg Clinic The Oregon Bariatric Center now has a Roseburg clinic to provide more convenient pre- and post-operative care to patients living in southern Oregon. Bariatric surgery patients, particularly LAP-BAND patients, require regular follow-up care for optimal results. SURGICAL PROCEDURES

Unless otherwise indicated by complicating factors, the following procedures are performed laparoscopically for lower risk of infection, faster healing, shorter length of stay and less scarring.

Adjustable Gastric Banding

Adjustable gastric banding, or LAP-BAND, uses a silicone elastomer band placed around the upper part of the stomach to simulate a small stomach pouch that can hold only a small amount of food.

Indications

When determining the ideal candi-date for bariatric surgery, the Oregon Bariatric Center follows guidelines established by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery:

■ Patients should be at least 100 pounds overweight, have a BMI of 40 or higher, and have no alcohol, drug or smoking problems.

■ Patients with a BMI of 35 to 39.9 may be candidates if they have one or more co-morbidities such as high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol or heart disease.

Note: The Food and Drug Administration recently approved LAP-BAND for a broader panel of patients, including those with a BMI of 30 or above with accompa-nying obesity-related co-morbidities.

Roseburg Clinic

The Oregon Bariatric Center now has a Roseburg clinic to provide more convenient pre- and post-operative care to patients living in southern Oregon. Bariatric surgery patients, particularly LAP-BAND patients, require regular follow-up care for optimal results. By establishing a clinic on the Mercy Medical Center campus at 2801 NW Mercy Drive, Suite 350, Roseburg, OR 97471, the Oregon Bariatric Center can provide close-to-home care to a broader patient population.

Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy

This procedure is ideal for patients with extremely high BMI or co-morbidities that rule out other forms of surgery. The majority of the stomach (85 percent) is resected, leaving a long tubular sleeve from esophagus to small intestine. The Oregon Bariatric Center began offering this procedure in December 2009.

Patient Outcomes

Research demonstrates that a 10 percent loss of excess body weight results in significant improvements in diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea and other key co-morbidities in most patients. Increased percentage of weight loss typically correlates directly with ongoing health improvements.

Patient Volumes

More than 600 patients have com-pleted surgical weight loss programs at the Oregon Bariatric Center over the past five years.

Roux-En-Y Gastric Bypass Surgery

Roux-En-Y gastric bypass surgery is recognized as the gold standard treat-ment for clinically severe obesity because of its low complication rate and long-term success in achieving weight loss. Patients experience an effective loss of 50 to 75 percent of excess body weight.
