Multi-storey expansion FOR IONA PRESENTATION COLLEGE
Reflecting its status as an esteemed provider of secondary education, Iona Presentation College has recently completed an expansion of its buildings and facilities.
Situated in Palmerston Street, Mosman Park, the college is on an elevated site with existing facilities including administration, general purpose classrooms, science laboratories, music, library, boarding house, hall, art and technology room, sports centre, swimming pool, convent, on site car parking, maintenance areas, as well as outdoor passive and limited active areas.
The buildings within the campus vary in age, style, and ability to meet current educational needs. The East and West wings were upgraded in 1999-2000 for science, language and general classrooms, as well as addressing current building code requirements of the time.

The present development was constructed by PS Structures with management services being provided by Total Project Management (TotalPM). It comprises the demolition of the existing boarding house and library to enable the construction of a new multi-storey, split level building located in the centre of the Iona campus.
SIGNIFICANTLY IMPROVED SPACE AND FACILITIES
The building has been developed to help met the College’s ongoing educational and curriculum objectives and to provide contemporary learning environments to cater for the existing student population with a core focus on STEM. It also includes significantly improved space and facilities for student services, a staff community lounge and replacement of the existing library, now referred to as the iCentre.
Designed by EIW Architects, the development was integrated into the existing built fabric, while creating a new hub for the ‘heart’ of the Iona year 7-12 campus.
The multi-storey, split level building connects into the existing building levels. As the site is tight and sloping the building
has been designed to respond accordingly, thus enhancing universal accessibility (specifically to neighbouring buildings) and connection throughout the campus.
The design addresses the fall across the site with splitting of levels and connecting into the various surrounding building levels. The basement level connects with the existing northern ground level, while the half level up, referred to as the ground floor, connects into the existing ground levels.
Key materials used in the project include Compressed Fibre Cement Swiss Pearl Cladding, composite timber claddings, Capral CW 175 double glazing, brickwork and sheet metal roofing generally.
LOAD-BEARING AFS WALLS AND CONCRETE COLUMNS
The development generally consists of in situ concrete columns supporting in situ concrete slabs, with elements of AFS walling throughout. Transfer slabs and beams were adopted where required, however these were kept to a minimum. A concrete roof slab provides support for the plant and equipment, with structural
It comprises the demolition of the existing boarding house and library across two separate stages to enable the construction of a new multi-storey, split level building located in the centre of the Iona campus.

framework purlins and metal roof sheeting completing the roof structure over other areas.
Microfine grout injection was required to allow construction of Separable Portion 1 while maintaining the existing adjacent buildings. Lateral stability was provided via the lift core walls, AFS walls throughout the building and braced bays positioned around the perimeter of the building.
The geotechnical study completed by Douglas Partners identified the site as Class A, with shallow pad footing being deemed adequate for the development.
The original cold water supply to the college had low supply pressures which were insufficient for the development. A new water storage tank and booster pumpset were installed in the new building to supply increased pressure to the existing campus while also servicing the needs of the new development.

Stunning Plaster Finish BY THE POLISHED PLASTER COMPANY
With 17 years of dedication to Western Australia, the Polished Plaster Company can boast a multitude of finishes for many of Perth’s architects and designers.
When EIW asked them to provide a decorative surface finish that would create a stunning element to the elevator core and main staircase of their new school building, a visit was arranged for the design team to view the extensive range of Armourcoat finishes on display in the Polished Plaster Company’s O’Connor showroom.
The Spatulata plaster finish was selected and the colours were chosen by the Principal to complement the school branding. This luxurious finish is a unique mix of high-grade aged lime, micronised marble powder and special additives which create the highest sheen level and the most intriguing textures. Applied in numerous fine layers then trowel polished to a glassy surface, it possesses remarkable depth and shine.
The Polished Plaster Company said it was a pleasure working with PS Structures from start to finish, ensuring that the same quality was created throughout the 500m2 project.
The Polished Plaster Company have used this finish for many of the world’s high-end retail shops around Australia as well as many luxurious residential homes where quality is of the essence. It is available in any colour and it is deemed to be their signature finish.
Teamwork within the company’s immediate structure and the greater bounds of the project team ensure a true team environment is achieved in order to pursue the final objective: the timely completion of the works, within budget, to the satisfaction of all parties.
