Continuingtosupportbothsystemsmakesacertainkindofsense:theyarenotthesameoperatingsystemandsupportverydifferentkindsofdevices.Androidruns(mostly)throughcomputer-basedappsandaChromebookruns(mostly)oncloud-basedapps.Google’sambiguityisalsomarket-related:Androidishugelypopularandholdsasignificantmarket-share.EventhoughGooglehasnotyetfoundawaytomonetizeAndroidattheleveltheywouldlike(duetoopensourcesharing),theycan’tjustpulltheplug.Ontheotherhand,Chromebooks(sofar)haveafairlysmallmarketshare.Withanestimated5millionunitsexpectedtosellin2014,Chromebookshaveabout2%ofthepersonalcomputermarket.However,thatisa79%increaseover2013salesxxxii,so—asanOSproductline—ithasalotofpromise.
However,manyexpertsbelievethatGoogle’sdeclarationsnotwithstanding,ChromeandAndroidareonacollision coursexxxiii.Thecloud/computerlineisgettingevermoreblurryandasmorewebappsandmorerobustweb-appsaredeveloped,itmaybethatsomewhereonthehorizonthetwooperatingsystemswillbecomeone,oratleastmergeintoonedevice.Andthatmaynotbesofaroff:Android“L”(dueoutinlatefall2014)isincludingafeaturethatallowsyourAndroiddevicetounlockyourChromebookwhenevertheyareclosetogether.Notificationswillappearonbothdevicessimultaneously,andthereareappsthatallowusersto“handoff”anitemcreatedinonesystem/devicetoopenontheotherxxxiv.
B. Apple iOS LikeAndroid,Apple’siOSlaunchedfirstasaphone-basedsystemandthenmovedintotablets.Early
developmentsimilaritiesstopthere,however.TheiOSwasbasedonthesameUnixcoreasthesuccessfulOSXthatwasalreadydrivingApplecomputers.Sinceitsinception,Apple’soperatingsystem(iOS)has beentightlycontrolledandonlymeanttoworkontheverysmallofferingofAppledevices.Initsinitialyearsonthemarket,nothirdpartyappswereallowed,andonlyonemanufacturerandonecarrier(AT&T) wereallowed.
Thereareprosandconstothisproprietarycontrol:sincealliOSappshavetobeapprovedbyApple,theyallhaveasimilaruserinterface,makingthemveryeasytoimplement.ThereisnomarketfragmentationandusersknowexactlywhattheyaregettingwhentheybuyanAppledevice.Apple’smajorelementsare“bakedin”totheOS,butthedevelopmentprocesshasbeenremarkablyfreeofbloatware,keepingthesystemquiteresponsiveevenwitharichsetoffeaturesxxxv.
Thedownsideofthatisalackofcustomization.TheiPhonelimitswhereandhowyouaccessfeaturesandcontent,unlikeAndroidOSdevices:

Apple’stightcontrolalsomeansacertainlevelofreliabilityindevicesupport.SinceApplehassomuchmoneytiedupinaverysmalllineofdevices, itsdecisiontostopsupportingdevicesoroldOSversionsare very linear and fairly predictable. Android devices and versions are much less predictable and manufacturershaverepeatedlyreleasedadeviceonlytokillitoffthefollowingyear,leavingpurchasersstrandedfortechsupport.AsnotedaboveinEducationalOpportunitiesintheAndroidOS,anotherelementthatcouldincreaseeducationalsaleswouldbeacommitmentonthepartofthemanufacturerthatthedeviceswouldbesupportedforaminimumnumberofyears,andthatspecificeducationalappswouldbeguaranteedtoremaincompatiblethroughthelifeofthedevice.
AppleiPadshavecreatedamassivedemandfortabletcomputingandhaveseenearlyadoptionbyschools,duemainlytotheintuitiveinterfaceandtherangeofnewapplications.Keyadvantagesincludethehighquality,easeofuse,alargerangeofapplications,areliableOS,andgoodbatterylifeandperformance.Itsmainlimitationsarethatitisproprietary,singlesourcehardwarewithalackofsupportforexistingcontent,connectivity,andnetworkresources.Limitedconfigurabilitymeansitisdifficulttosecureandcostlytomanageandprovisioncontentonmultipledevices.
AnothersignificantdifferencebetweenAppleandAndroidisinthedevelopmentanddeliveryofapps.AsofOctober2014,theAndroidappstoreclaimsover1millionappsavailable.Itis,however,impossibletotellhowmanyofthoserunonallofthedevices,someofthedevicesorevennoneofthedevices.TheApplestoreclaimsaboutthesamenumberofapps(1.2millionxxxvii)butduetotheirstringentcontrolonappdevelopmentandOSreleases,itishighlylikelythatmostorallofthoseappsworkonmostorallofthecurrently supported Apple devices.
