1 General informationIn case of maintenance and repair work affecting the hydraulic system of a hydromechanical operating mechanism it is necessary to drain the hydraulic oil completely or in parts and to refill the operating mechanism after the job in a proper way again. For this hydraulic oil procedure, the oil handling set for hydromechanical operating mechanisms (1HDS112025R0008) has to be used.

The oil handling set is applicable for hydromechanical operating mechanisms of type AHMA, HMB and HMC. For older types of operating mechanisms like the HKA the oil handling set is only applicable with a bigger oil collection container (at least 30 liters, not included in the ABB scope of supply).

Moreover, the vacuum pump set (1HDS112160R0001) is required for oil filling of operating mechanisms through the high-pressure connection. 2 AbbreviationsAHMA Hydromechanical operating mechanism type A HKA Hydromechanical operating mechanism type KAHMB Hydromechanical operating mechanism type B HMC Hydromechanical operating mechanism type CSF6 Sulphur hexafluoride 3 Associated documents

4 Scope of supplyThe oil handling set will be delivered in a transportation case. The scope of supply is shown in figure 2. The detailed scope of supply is printed on a packing list provided within the transportation case.

5 Safety instructions• When using the oil handling set regard all local regulations concerning safety on work and those regula-

tions of the operator of the installation. • There is a risk of stumbling and slipping. Block the working place to prevent stumbling over the associated

parts.• Only personnel which has been trained on hydromechanical operating mechanisms and switching appa-

ratus shall operate the oil handling set.• Wear safety glasses, oil-resistant gloves and safety shoes during work.• Do not release hydraulic oil of the operating mechanism to the environment. Dispose oil-soaked clothes

environmentally compatible. Hydraulic oil is harmful to the environment.• Avoid direct contact to hydraulic oil. Direct contact may cause irritations. Clean affected sites with abun-

dant amount of water. • Do not breathing or swallowing hydraulic vapor, mist and oil. Breathing high concentration levels or

swallowing may cause damages to health or death.• Do not put defective or damaged parts into operation. Replace damaged parts and parts which recom-

mended period of use is exceeded by new parts. The device shall only be repaired by the manufacturer. • For following switching operations of the operating mechanism on the coupled breaker, it has to be secu-

red that the switching device is filled with SF6 gas at appropriate operating pressure. The minimal oil level at fully charged operating mechanism should not be lower than the oil level given in the oil level charts of the technical description of the oil handling set.

6 Shipping and storageTransport and store the oil handling set only in the supplied transportation case to prevent damage and protect the components from sunlight. Store only in dry and dust-free areas. Storage temperature: +5°C … +40°C.

7 Preliminary worksCheck all parts oft he oil handling set for damages before commissioning: 1. Check the hydraulic hoses for damages. If the hydraulic hoses are damaged they have to be replaced by news one before commissioning!2. Check the period of use of the hydraulic hoses. We recommend to replace the hydraulic hoses by new ones at least five years after purchase to prevent leakages and malfunctions.Preliminary works for oil refilling with the spray bottle:1. Cut the riser pipe just before the constriction with a scissor. 2. Insert the riser pipe completely in the spray bottle.3. Cut the filter hose in two pieces to about 1/3 and 2/3 of the length.4. Attach the oil filter to the riser pipe. Therefore, attach the short piece of the hose between the riser pipe and the oil filter. Attach the longer piece of the hose to the other side of the oil filter. Consider the insta- llation and flow direction of the oil filter (indicated through arrow)!

Preliminary works for oil filling through the filling hose with the vacuum pump: 1. Cut the second filter hose in two pieces to about 1/3 and 3/4 of the length. 2. Attach the two hose pieces to another oil filter. Consider that the longer piece of the hose is attached facing away from the flow direction side of the oil filter. Attach the shorter piece to the other side. Consider the installation and flow direction of the oil filter (indicated through arrow)!

8 Technical informationThe sealing caps of the screw fittings have to be mounted immediately after removing the oil hoses from the operating mechanism.Screw fittings with rubber sealings have to be tightened with 25 Nm and cutting ring fittings with 45 Nm.

9 Operating instructionsDraining hydraulic oil 1. Open the pressure release lever or screw slowly to discharge the disc spring stack. 2. Place the oil collection container on solid ground near the operating mechanism.3. Place the oil collection mats underneath the high-pressure connection (ball valve or minimess). Cover below elements if necessary.4. For operating mechanisms with ball valve:

- Close ball valve. - Dismantle union nut and sealing plug and connect the oil draining and filling hose.

For operating mechanisms without ball valve: - Connect connection hose and oil draining and filling hose to the ball valve coupling. - Close ball valve. - Dismantle sealing cap of the minimess connection from the operating mechanism. - Connect connection hose to the minimess connection of the operating mechanism.

Hang-in the open end of the oil drain and fill hose in the opened oil collection container.5. Open the filling connection of the low-pressure tank.6. Open the ball valve and drain the hydraulic oil.7. Close the oil collection container and store it in a safe place.

Correction of oil level – refill hydraulic oil 1. Charge the OM completely (until PUMP OFF).2. Fill-in hydraulic oil to to the pre-assembled spray bottle with oil filter. 3. Open the filling connection of the low-pressure tank.4. Hang-in the end of the filter hose to the low-pressure tank and refill hydraulic oil over the oil filter by compressing the spray bottle.5. The oil level in operation at fully charged spring stack should not be lower than the oil level given in the oil-level-tables. 6. Close the filling connection of the low-pressure tank again.

Oil filling of an operating mechanism with the vacuum pump set (1HDS112160R0001)1. Open the filling connection of the low-pressure tank.2. Connect the vacuum pump and the expansion tank according to the instructions in the product manual of the vacuum pump set (1HDS680632) to the filling connection of the operating mechanism.3. Place the oil collection mats underneath the high-pressure connection (ball valve or minimess). Cover below elements if necessary.

4. For operating mechanisms with ball valve: - Close ball valve.

5. Attach the pre-assembled oil filter hose with oil filter to the open end of the oil drain and fill hose. Consider the installation and flow direction of the oil filter (indicated through arrow)! 6. Hang-in the open end of the filter hose into the oil barrel (or the filled oil collection container). 7. Open the ball valve and switch on the vacuum pump. Hydraulic oil will be sucked into the operating mechanism through the vacuum.8. Close the ball valve when the target oil level according to the oil-level-tables is reached and switch off the vacuum pump again.9. Dismantle the hoses and the vacuum pump. Attach sealing caps to the high-pressure and low-pressure connection again.

12 Trouble shootingOil hoses are leaking, or oil cannot be sucked into to operating mechanism with the vacuum pump.

Possible root cause Action

Oil hoses are not connected correctly. Check that oil hoses are connected correctly, and fitting are screwed tight.

Oil hoses is leaking. Replace oil hose by a new one.

13 Disposal The oil handling set consists of materials which may be recycled. The main components are metal and plastics. However, most of the components are directly in contact with hydraulic oil. Observe the local regulations for this case. In doubt contact the local ABB representative.
