Client Profile: The Gym Group consists of over 100 fitness clubs throughout the UK, offering members round the clock fitness at affordable prices. Despite low membership rates the specification of clubs is high.

The Challenge: The gym was located in a shopping mall with retailers, cafes and restaurants nearby. On this occasion the challenge was to minimise any noise and vibration disturbance, caused by falling objects such as barbells, dumbbells and kettle-bells, to tenants operating in other areas of the building. The long-term protection of the subfloor was also important to the landlord. Secondary to this, a highly resilient, non-slip and cushioned surface suitable for functional training activities was required for gym members to workout safely.

TVS Solution: TVS were appointed as the preferred contractor because a high quality, cost-effective and proven flooring solution was specified. Heavy-duty, interlocking SPORTEC® Style tiles were fitted over acoustically tested and shock-absorbing layers in the heavy lifting area of the gym. This build-up of material is unique to TVS and specifically engineered to control noise and vibra-tion in this type of environment. In the gym space designated for functional training activities SPORTEC® Color-15 was ideal as this material provides long-term protection to the subfloor as well as a safe surface to train on. SPORTEC® Fusion Classic is a pre-fabricated combination of a technically advanced elastic layer made from SPORTEC® Standard material and a tried and tested SPORTEC® UNI classic floor covering. This system prevents damage to joints and other injuries and is therefore particularly recommended for indoor sports facilities in schools, leisure centres and multi-purpose buildings. The elastic layer and the top layer are delivered as pre-fabricated double-layer rolls which means less time is required for installation.

Case Study

With the crucial January gym sales period just weeks away, Huddersfield Leisure Centre urgently needed a speedy yet sustainable flooring solution if the gym was to start 2017 with a bang. Luckily for site operator Kirklees Active Leisure (KAL), TVS Group was on hand with a fast and highly effective solution to the challenge of resurfacing the 400sq m free weights area in just seven days, pre-paring it to attract a raft of new year members. “TVS came highly recommended and were very quick to set the wheels in motion with a series of meetings and thorough consultations,” says KAL business development manager Barry Turnbull. “Time was of the essence, and TVS worked with us to find the most cost-effective solution for our needs and then quickly got to work to complete acomplex project in just a week.”

Reducing noiseWith January the busiest time of the year for gym operators, it’s no surprise that December is the time when TVS is most in de-mand to get sites looking their best. Having started in 2009, the company has developed a slick operation that meant it was able to meet the unique challenges of the project despite the tight deadline in the middle of a busy period. “It was a case of making sure we were really shrewd with our logistics and ensuring we had adequate labour on the job to meet the requirements,” says TVS group sales manager Andy Roberts.“We know from experience that it’s vital to co-ordinate phased deliveries in the correct sequence and quantities, to ensure a continuous and efficient process.” Roberts adds: “Staff at the gym have said that the new flooring solution has helped reduce noise and vibration throughout the building, which is an additional benefit of the specialist rubber compound. “Our background is in acoustic solutions and that helps us. It’s a factor that’s often overlooked, but with property at a premium, many gyms are only viable because they have specialist acoustic solutions in their free weights and functional areas that minimise disruption to the rest of the building. It’s a very technical area, but gym owners certainly can’t afford to get it wrong.”

Sector analysisRoberts says: “The fitness environment has traditionally been our heartland and we’re seeing a notable increase in the size of free weight and functional areas, as in Huddersfield Leisure Centre. We also supply custom-designed sprint tracks and we’re putting a lot of prowler lanes into functional training spaces right now.Obviously that’s a wider industry trend that has been taking shape for a while, but in terms of our work pipeline, it’s showing nosign of relenting in the UK market. “We’re also seeing huge demand for our sports flooring solutions, so we’ve recently appointed an outdoor surfacing specialist whose key role is to service our clients in the outdoor sector. “Right now, this covers EPDM rubberflooring solutions (a synthetic rubber) for outdoor multi-use game areas (MUGAs) and there’s also a growing appetite for our indoor sports hall systems. “Additionally, our unique expertise in the technical market of 3G and artificial turf systems means we’re supplying shock attenuating elastic layers for a range of sports, as well as cork infill materials. It’s safe to say we’ve started 2017 in the same busy vein we ended 2016 and we can’t wait to help more people get active.”

CASE STUDYTVS SUPPORT STRENGTH TRAINING ACADEMY

Background: Primal Gym is an independent fitness facility located within a mixed-use development complex in the city of Leeds. A residential apartment block is situated above and retailers are trading either side. The client’s vision was to create a “best-in- class” strength training academy for the North of England however controlling any noise and vibration caused by heavy impacts presented a rather unique challenge. As the client was not prepared to compromise on their business concept they turned to Total Vibration Solutions Ltd and TVS Sports Surfaces for help.

The Challenge: The gym was to operate in a shared commercial space and the challenge was to minimise noise and vibration disturbance (caused by gym activity) to neighbouring occupants.

TVS Solution: TVS supplied and installed a range of acoustically engineered materials along with finished surfaces that exceeded the performance requirements set out for this project. As part of the contract, a reinforced concrete slab was constructed on the ground floor and “jacked up”, creating a floating floor with a specified air gap. This acoustic platform was then finished with a performance layer of interlocking SPORTEC® Style tiles which provided a usable space for weightlifting while reducing impact noise and vibration to the adjacent businesses. The first floor of the gym was designed for dynamic training activities and TVS first installed shock absorbing underlay materials, finished with a non-slip performance layer of SPORTEC® Color-15. A custom designed sprint track was also integrated into this area allowing for speed, agility and quickness (SAQ) activity to take place. This synthetic surface also ensured exercisers could perform pushing and pulling exercises with a fully-loaded sled.

Result: TVS helped the client optimise the use of floor space over two levels and provided an innovative flooring solution without compromising the clients’ goals. Noise and vibration was controlled and neighbouring tenants were not disturbed by gym activities.
