February’s Virtue: LOVE
“For God so loved the world , He
gave it His only Son…”John 3:16
Shrove Tuesday February 12, 2013 Ash Wednesday February 13, 2013
Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent. During the 40 days of Lent, we prepare for Easter by taking time to be quiet in our hearts, by praying, by doing good deeds, by being forgiving and asking
for forgiveness. We will receive ashes on our foreheads to remind us that we need to try to
be more like Jesus.

February is Heart Month. Three things that will keep your heart strong and healthy are healthy eat-ing, physical activity and not smok-ing or being around smoke. As par-ents you can start teaching your children these three messages at a young age to help them become healthy adults. How can you do this? ♥ If you smoke, think about quitting and make your home smoke-free
Pope John Paul II said: ―I look to all of you, brothers and sisters of every state of life, to you, Christian families, to you, the sick and elderly, and to you, young people: confidently take up the Rosary once again. Rediscover the Rosary in the light of Scripture, in harmony with the Liturgy, and in the context of your daily lives. May this appeal of mine not go unheard!‖ R.V.M. n.43. We pray the Rosary at St.Jude’s once a month, thank you to the Rosary Apostolate. The Rosary is prayed at St.Jude’s the first Tuesday of every month.

Dear Parents,
It‟s hard to believe that we are
already in February. We have
been quite busy at St.Jude‟s with
curriculum and extra-curricular
programs going at full force.
We are also quite busy preparing
for our 4th Annual Feb.8 Celebra-
tion of Life Concert that will be
held from 9am to 12pm.This
event will be a great opportunity
for our grades 3 to 8 students to
listen to musical and dance per-
formances of some of our
Board‟s finest and upcoming mu-
sicians and dancers. Music is a
passion for all students and so is
dancing.. What better way to cele-
brate the accomplishments of our
staff and students than to create
a celebration during the bitterly
cold month of February. This will
be a great opportunity to assess
whether we have all, been striving
for “Excellence in all that we do.”
Parents thank you for always visit-
ing the office before entering the
classroom areas of our school.
This ensures that SAFETY is main-
tained. We continue to regard our
Parent Volunteers as valued mem-
bers of our school community and
encourage more parents to get
involved,. After all, it does, „take
the whole village to raise a child.‟
Our Daily physical activity program
continues to thrive. Thank you to
all classroom teachers and
Mr.DeCaria for the preparation of
our student leaders . This initia-
tive is certainly assisting with our
continued goal of helping your
children to stay healthy and ac-
tive.

Importance of being in school from 8:30 am to 3:30pm Parents are reminded of the importance of keeping our students in the classroom everyday. This means
being on time and leaving school at 3:30pm. When students are pulled out early they miss important learn-
ing time. Learning gaps are hindrances to a student’s success. Please try and make all doctor’s appoint-
ments outside to school hours. If your child does have an appointment send a note in the agenda to the
teacher, so that your child will have the day’s work and agenda completed to leave and meet you at the of-
fice. Buzzing the class without prior notice to the teacher disrupts the lesson and takes away class learning
time. Your co-operation is appreciated.
School Learning Improvement Plan On Monday, February 4th our SO Loretta Notten will be visiting our school for her second School
Learning Improvement Plan meeting with our School Improvement Team. During her visit, Ms. Notten
will be visiting the classrooms. The primary focus of the visit is to see our students in action as they use
success criteria to achieve the learning goal established by the classroom teacher but guided by the On-
tario Curriculum. Student work will be reviewed because that is where the true evidence of best practic-
es is actually found. The teachers have been asked to track students who are on the cusp of achieving
Level 3 and 4 work. This target group becomes a focal group and the teachers have been asked to ana-
lyze those best practices that they feel have truly assisted these students to in achieving a strong under-
standing of the learning goal they are responsible for. This precision will help us to review and ultimate-
ly create a compendium of best practices which all staff can use in order to assist all of their students to
achieve high quality work that demonstrates that learning has taken place.
Our numeracy focus still remains firm– to help our students to become better at problem solving. To
that effect, our teachers have been using the three part math lesson to achieve this goal. Teachers have
been involved in using technology, co –teaching and sharing their best practices with their colleagues in
order to achieve this SMART goal. We realize that over time all of our students will become quite famil-
iar with this methodology. Ask them questions about what they have learned in math and have them
articulate how they are solving math related problems at school. Talking about their math studies is a
great way for them to internalize the concepts they are being taught.
In literacy making connections and helping our students to better infer remain goals tied directly with
our main goal of helping our students to become strong critical thinkers. Our teachers are becoming
more aware of the importance of creating meaningful activities that allow the students to ask questions
and articulate their thinking both orally and in written form. Once again lessons are structured around
a learning goal and then a criteria for achieving Level 3 and 4 work is established with much student
input. Then it’s all about feedback, feedback and more feedback so that the students are better able to
gage whether they are on track or not.
Talk to your children about the kind of feedback they are receiving at school so that you become part of
the process of learning.
Drumming Workshop Update
Mrs. Orsini’s grade 8 class has been working diligently for many weeks now on making African Djembe
Drums. They have just completed the final stage of this process by assembling the drums. They assembled
the drums by learning how attach the intricate roping, putting on animal skins, and finally tuning the
drums. This experience has been extremely rewarding for all the students and teachers involved and the
end results are extraordinary! It has been a wonderful leaning experience as well.
The students from Mrs. Orsini’s class, as well as three other classes in the school will now begin the next
part of this very unique learning experience, learning to play this cultural instrument. Each of the classes
will be provided several lessons, which will be led by an experience Djembe musician. We look forward to
this awesome opportunity and cannot wait to show what we’ve learned!!
See Hear Screening @ St. Jude
We are happy to announce that SeeHear will be running a hearing and vision screening clinic at on
Feb 12 & 13, 2013. This is an excellent opportunity for your child to have his/her hearing and
vision in a convenient and cost effective manner.
Some points to remember
Your child’s hearing and vision should be screened every year.
Growing children are very susceptible to middle ear problems and one of the best ways to
prevent hearing loss is early detection of middle ear function issues.
A visit to an audiologist in a private clinic costs upwards of $50.00 and is not covered by
O.H.I.P. If your child is referred to a hospital clinic by your family doctor, the cost is covered
by O.H.I.P.
Your child’s hearing is not being monitored unless they are seeing an audiologist or an E.N.T.
The permission forms will come home approximately two weeks before the clinic. Please fill them
out and return to the school with the $15.00 screening fee prior to the clinic date.
This screening is not intended to replace a regular visit to an audiologist or optometrist
Good grades start with good hearing and good vision
