Guatemala Mission TripMarch 3 - March 9Team Size: 10 PeopleCalvary is going on Mission to Guatemala to work with our missionaries, the Bradys and the Lamberths. We have a very busy trip planned to help two local pastors as they seek to make disciples in their neighborhood. This month we dive into the Gospel deeps of Scripture as we begin a nearly year-long study of Paul’s Epistle to the Romans. Through a series of Sunday messages, life group discussions, personal study, and scripture memorization, we will endeavor together to honor God by knowing and doing His Word. Romans contains the most thorough treatment of the work of Christ in all of Scripture. As such, it is essential reading and study for every Christian. But it is not easy or simple. We will be challenged to think deeply, study diligently, pray earnestly, and act obediently.

Of Romans, Martin Luther said:

I labored and diligently and anxiously as to how to understand Paul’s word [in Romans 1:17], where he says that the righteousness of God is revealed in the gospel. I sought long and knocked anxiously for the expression “the righteousness of God” blocked the way, because I took it to mean that righteousness whereby God is righteous and deals righteously in punishing the unrighteous. My situation was that, although an impeccable monk, I stood before God as a sinner troubled in conscience, and I had no confidence that my merit would assuage him. Therefore, I did not love a righteous and angry God, but rather hated and murmured against him. Yet I clung to the dear Paul and had a great yearning to know what he meant.…Then I grasped that the righteousness of God is that righteousness by which through grace and sheer mercy God justifies us by faith. Thereupon I felt myself to be reborn and to have gone through open doors into paradise…When I saw the difference, that law is one thing and gospel another, I broke through. And as I had formerly hated the expression “the righteousness of God”, I now began to regard it as my dearest and most comforting word. So that this expression of Paul’s became to me in very truth a gate of paradise.…If you have a true faith that Christ is your Saviour, then at once you have a gracious God for faith leads you I and opens up God’s heart and will that you should see pure grace and overflowing love. This it is to behold God in faith that you should look upon his fatherly friendly heart, in which there is no anger nor ungraciousness. He who sees God as angry does not see him rightly but only looks upon a curtain, as if a dark cloud had been drawn across his face.

As we study this grand epistle together, may we too grasp the righteousness of God that justifies sinners! May we too dive into the great and precious treasures found in this book. And as we do, may God encourage our hearts, build our faith, strengthen our resolve, and empower our mission. May we say, as the Apostle Paul did:

16 I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. 17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.”

- Romans 1:16-17 (ESV)

May God be glorified as we study His Word and do it!

- Pastor Paul

Spotlight On Our Staff

Zach Daniels, Director of ChildrenHey Calvary family, I’m Zach. At 20 years old God gave me the desire for pastoral ministry. Since then, I’m now 23, God has placed me in children’s ministry and what a blessing it has been. As followers of Jesus, we are all called to move people to higher ground and to help those people become life-long disciples and I by grace and mercy get to do that with children. I’m a husband to Hannah and we are expecting our first baby girl named Lucy Claire this May. Thank you for adopting us into your family this past year. I’m so looking forward to spending a wonderful year with this church family.

Your friend in Christ, Zach Daniels
