SUPPORTING STUDENTSACCELERATING ACHIEVEMENT Strategies to engage economically disadvantaged students in high-level learning

In expensive California, 30% of non-elderly households struggle to meet basic needs (Insight Center for Community Economic Development). For the nearly 3.5 million K-12 students who qualify for free or reduced price lunch statewide – over half of our total

student population – this economic gap all too often translates to an academic achievement gap. Yet education remains the strongest pathway out of poverty (United Way of Greater Los Angeles). As educators, it is our job to help all students – including those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds – achieve in ways that promote college and career readiness, increase high school graduation rates, and decrease high school dropout rates.

Join colleagues from across the state at the CLS Annual Conference South to learn how you can help all students in your classroom, school or district learn at the levels required for college and career success. From understanding how to engage all students to designing specific strategies that create a culture of achievement, this conference will provide you with practical, K-12 grade-level resources for your immediate use. FEATURED SPEAKERS The following two general sessions are included with conference registration.

Dr. Ruby Payne: Boys, Poverty and Dropouts Friday, October 26, 8:00 - 11:00 am All participants get a copy of Dr. Payne’s new book, Boys in Poverty, free with conference registration! School dropouts are disproportionately poor, minority males. This 3-hour workshop will focus on prevention and early intervention as well as ways to

address key concerns for male students. Many practical strategies will be given. As Clemson University Dropout Center states, “dropping out is a process, not an event.” We will look at the process beginning in elementary school as well as effective, preventative tools. A particular focus will be male emotional issues: how these issues surface in school and become discipline challenges, and what can be done to address them. Dr. Payne is a consultant and author with over 30 years of experience as a teacher and administrator.

Dr. Ernest Morrell: Powerful Teaching, Powerful Schools: Towards a Critical, Community-Centered, Culturally Sustaining Agenda for Educational Excellence Saturday, October 27, 8:00 am – 9:30 am Explore an evidence-based, community- and culture-focused model for school empowerment developed by Dr. Morrell and colleagues that raises

and maintains academic excellence in high-poverty schools. See how your school can apply the five components of school culture, instructional leadership, youth engagement, parent partnerships and social supports to galvanize active participation by students, parents, staff and community – and raise achievement and graduation rates in the process. Grade-level examples will be provided. Dr. Morrell is the director of the Institute for Urban and Minority Education at Teachers College, Columbia University and the vice president of the National Council of Teachers of English.
