2017 ANNUAL MEETING

The 2017 Annual Meeting was held Saturday, October 21, 2017, in Marshalltown. Ron Stanerson stepped down after serving two terms as President. Kenny Wiese of Story City was elected President to serve two years starting in 2018.

Phyllis VonThun of Camanche is this year’s inductee into the IHHPA Hall of Fame.

Bill Sprague of Berwick is the most improved player, improving his percentage by 12.53%. Glenn Warden of Grimes and Russell Wiese of Roland played in the most tournaments and leagues this year – 32.

The members in attendance ratified the Bylaws Amendment to increase dues to $39 per member, with a reduced rate of $25 to a second member in the same household. IHHPA will continue to pay NHPA dues for Iowa junior pitchers.

Ralph Davis, 1st Vice President, Ralph Palmer, 3rd Vice President, and Vern Kollasch, Iowa Regional Director, were re-elected for two-year terms. Chris Jordan and Shirley Sprague were elected Co-Editors of the newsletter.

Pam Slippy is recovering from hip replacement surgery. She hopes to be back on the courts early next year. You can E-mail her a get well wish: [email protected]

HORSESHOE PITCHING BACK IN MOULTON

I was contacted about redoing some old courts in the downtown Moulton area. Only thing left was the concrete pitching platform for two courts. I went down in June and looked at the site with Terry from town. Two platforms had to be moved closer to the side, stakes set, and new backboards. Sand was used for the pits.

Moulton Jamboree Days were held on September 7, 8 and 9, and the courts were ready. They did an excellent job on them. The courts are located on Main Street, downtown by the Library and the water tower. Moulton is South of Highway 2 on Highway 202, between Centerville and Bloomfield.

Ira Hartwick of Bloomfield, his wife, Kathy, and brother, Jerry Hartwick from Ankeny, ran the tournaments. They had doubles and single tournaments all three days, starting at 4:00 each day. There were around 12 pitchers per pitch. It was a real success. The money went to help the Library in town. Trophies were presented to the winners.

I went down with David Brent on Thursday and Saturday to help and to pitch. The locals were happy that horseshoe pitching was back in town. Good Job!

an avid Horseshoe Pitcher winning many tournaments around Iowa and especially at the Iowa State Fair, where he also served as a groundskeeper at the horseshoe courts during the fair. He was captain of the “A” Team that pitched in a league at Birdland Park. He was a 30 year member of the Iowa Hawkeye Horseshoe Pitchers Association. He enjoyed playing in a pool league. He played guitar and sang in jam sessions, writing several songs. He recorded many cassette tapes and CD’s that he gave to family and friends. He presented programs for senior organizations, singing and playing his guitar and including jokes. He and Phyllis enjoyed writing songs about family and friends. Slim was an avid St. Louis Cardinals Baseball fan. Square dancing was an activity they enjoyed for many years. Slim also called square dances. Slim was supportive of Phyllis’s active participation in Toastmasters and was a member himself for 10 years. Memorials may be made to Valley Church in West Des Moines or John Stoddard Cancer Center.

West Des Moines Courts Update

If you haven't heard, Springtime we will be seeing some improvements at the courts. The City will be installing fencing that will be higher on each side of the Walkway separating the North and South courts. Lighting improvements are in the plans also. A new shelter will be erected in the vicinity of the courts replacing the one that sits up on the hill to the North. I have talked to the City about Parking improvements, but have not heard back from them. The request has been passed on to the powers-that-be. I feel that the ground to the East or West of the courts would be an ideal spot for more parking.
