DIVERSITY IS BEING ASKED TO THE PARTY, INCLUSION IS BEING ASKED TO DANCE, EQUITY IS BEING ON THE ORGANISING COMMITTEESpeaker: Mr Meng Foon – Race Relations Commissioner.

The Race Relations Commissioner will open the 2020 Think Talk series by discussing current inequities in NZ and what the Treaty of Waitangi means in today's context. He will discuss the concept of equity and supporting communities to include change and the value of applying a human rights lens to achieve harmonious relations.Tuesday 18 February 7:30pm - 8:30pm

WHITE IS RIGHT!! THE EXTREME RIGHT IN NEW ZEALANDSpeaker: Distinguished Professor Paul Spoonley – Research Professor, College of Humanities and Social Sciences,

Massey University.

The 15th of March was a disturbing event in our history but it marked, what I have called elsewhere, the “end of our naivity” as New Zealanders. The extreme right, including the white supremacist groups and activists, have been a part of New Zealand’s political scene since the late 1960s. There are surprising numbers of groups and probably around 250 core activists. Recent developments have been the inclusion of Islamaphobic comments and views in their world view, the use of the internet to convey their message and attack certain individuals and groups, and actively linking with global activists and groups. So who are they? What do they believe? And should we be worried about their presence and activities? This talk will try to answer some of these questions and provide a history of these groups and extreme activists.Tuesday 26 February 7:30pm - 8:30pm

THINK TALKS

Our very popular THINKTalks continue in 2020 with a series of talks given by specially invited speakers.

Called on to be fresh, riveting and original, these speakers will ignite your curiosity and challenge your perspective on matters of substance, before responding to your comments and questions from the floor. With a similar format to TED Talks, this series will be sure to spark some crisp debate.

TIME FOR DISRUPTION IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY – A CIRCULAR ECONOMYSpeaker: Miriam Seifert – Masters of International Business.

Increases in purchasing and consumption habits have led to increases in waste and pollution around the world. Companies adopted a 'take, make and dispose' approach, which led to unimaginable repercussions for society and environment. Some of these effects are visible within the fashion industry. 2,700 litres of water (one person's drinking water for almost three years) is needed to produce one cotton T-shirt, and about 10,000 litres of water for a pair of jeans . Textiles account for 4 per cent of all waste sent to New Zealand landfills according to Ministry for the Environment figures. The concept of a circular economy or the regenerative economy seems to provide a solution to some societal and environmental problems.Tuesday 10 March 7:30pm - 8:30pm

ME, MY FOODS AND OBESITY: WISHING FOR A WAY OUTSpeaker: Dr Milind Mandlik – Teaching fellow in Marketing at the University of Auckland Business School.

One of the biggest concerns for human-health in the 21st century is ever-increasing obesity. Aptly termed an epidemic of 21st-century. Despite years of research and investment in health-promoting programmes, we have failed to slow down the ever-growing epidemic. The truth is we are leading busy lives and living with personal struggles which are inherently connected to how we choose, buy, prepare and consume foods, often in an unhealthful way, leading to weight-gain and enduring levels of obesity. Our research suggests we need a collective endeavour where individuals, communities, institutions of all kinds and policy makers must genuinely work together to make meaningful difference.Tuesday 24 March 7:30pm - 8:30pm

THE KEY TO COMBATING DEMENTIA IS EARLY DETECTIONSpeaker: Dr Brigid Ryan – Neuroscientist working at the Centre for Brain Research, University of Auckland.

This presentation will explain why early detection of dementia is vital for successful treatment. Brigid will discuss her research, a longitudinal study of frontotemporal dementia that aims to identify dementia at its earliest stage, before clinical symptoms appear.Tuesday 7 April 7:30pm - 8:30pm

REFORMING THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEMSpeaker: Dr Warren Brookbanks – Professor of Law, Auckland University of Technology.

The presentation will look at changes that have occurred or are occurring in the New Zealand criminal justice system in response to the rising prison population; and the challenges presented by substance abuse, especially methamphetamine. I will suggest that radical changes in the criminal justice system are necessary in order to deal with the changing nature of crime, and to provide better support for both victims of crime and vulnerable criminal offenders.Tuesday 19 May 7:30pm - 8:30pm

IMPROVING INDIGENOUS HEALTH AND INEQUALITYSpeaker: Matire Harewood – Associate Professor, School of Population Health, The University of Auckland.

In this talk Dr Matire Harwood will present practical ways to improve outcomes for Māori tamariki and their whānau. Potential solutions to be discussed will focus on indigenous leadership, systematic monitoring and assessment of equity and institutional racism, looking towards equity-focused quality improvement and partnerships with Māori.Tuesday 21 July 7:30pm - 8:30pm

PSYCHEDELIC DRUGS AND MEDICINESpeaker: Dr Suresh Muthukumaraswamy – Associate Professor, School of Pharmacy, University of Auckland.

Psychedelic drugs were studied as medical drugs in the 1950s and 1960s, however, the “war on drugs” effectively ended research on these drugs which were showing promise as treatments for a variety of mental health and addictive disorders. In this talk I will describe the recent renaissance of psychedelic drug research including studies that I have been involved in both in the UK and New Zealand.Tuesday 18 August 7:30pm - 8:30pm

POLITICAL MARKETING IN THE 2020 US PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONSpeaker: Dr Edward Elder – Research Assistant, The University of Auckland.

This presentation will explore the 2020 US Presidential Election from a strategic perspective. It will explore aspects such as the candidates strategic positioning, their overall strategy, their targeting and communication, how this relates to the makeup of the voting electorate and its potential effect on down-ballot races.Tuesday 22 September 7:30pm - 8:30pm

EMOTION REGULATION, RELATIONSHIPS AND WELL-BEINGSpeaker: Dr Rachel Low – Research Fellow, University of Auckland.

In this talk, I will first discuss the different ways people manage or control their emotions during emotionally challenging situations, with a specific focus on social interactions. I will also talk about how emotion regulation within intimate relationships shapes the degree to which individuals can successfully achieve personal goals, and how well couples can resolve their disagreements. Finally, I will discuss how parents' conflict can spill over to parent-child relationships within the family environment.Tuesday 27 October 7:30pm - 8:30pm

A $5 donation on arrival at the door is appreciated but not compulsory. For more information on the speakers please visit our website.

THE JOB STEALERS – HOW WILL ROBOTS CHANGE THE FUTURE OF WORK?Speaker: Dr Craig Sutherland – Professional Teaching Fellow, The University of Auckland.

Robots are not coming, they are here now! From factories to our homes, robots are changing the way we do things. Just read the papers, soon our jobs will be gone and we will bow to our robot overlords! Or will we? Are robots really that good? In this talk, I’ll cover some of the myths around robots and AI, especially their potential to steal our jobs and livelihood. I’ll show several examples of what robots are good at and what they are bad at, based on the research at The University of Auckland and overseas. HEALTH, WELL-BEING & FITNESS – TAI CHITai Chi is meditation in motion. Come and learn a series of slow, continuous movements that will promote physical and mental well-being, and improve coordination and balance.

The elementary level of Tai Chi teaches you the correct stances and movements that cultivate the flow of chi (energy) in your body. Most students practise at elementary level for a year or more. The focus is on developing the rounded and relaxed movements (steps) of Tai Chi with the correct posture. Once students can perform their steps accurately and with second-nature, the focus shifts to feeling chi in the body.

In the second level of Tai Chi, the focus of learning is to develop an awareness of the balance between internal and external chi. Students may study at this level for several years before progressing. As demand develops, we will offer higher levels of Tai Chi. Please enquire.
