Epistle, Gradual, Etc.

(At the Right or Epis tle Side) Having prayed with a nd for the people, lhe priest

no w instructs them by reading the Epis tle. Epis tl e m ea ns le tter; it is taken from a le Uer of the Apostles t o lhe fa ithful or from the w ritings of the Prophets o r olhe r parts ot Holy Scripture. In Solem n Mass es the S uhdeacon chants the Epistle.

The Gradual, from "gradus," meaning "step," so cn. lled because originally It was chanted on the altar "lep, is the congregation's response to t he ins pired in-sll uCbm- q!J. , ttml.l2D~stlBrethren: I myself have re-

ceived from the Lord (what I also deliver to you) , that the Lord Jesus, on the night on which he was betrayed, took bread, and giving thanks broke, and said, "This is my body which shall be given up for you; do this in remembrance of me." In like manner also the cup, after he had supped, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. For a s o£ten as you shall eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the death of the Lord, until he comes." Therefore whoever eats this bread or drinks the cup of the Lord unworthily, will be guilty of the body and blood of t,he Lord. S. Thanks be to God.

GRADUAL:-Ps. 144; 15, 16. . The eyes of all hope in Thee,

o Lord, and Thou givest them meat in due season. V. Thou openest thy hand, and fillest every living creature with thy blessing. Alleluia, alleluia. V. My flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed ; He that eateth my flesh and drinketh m y blood, abideth in Me, and I in him.

true: Strive thy best to praise Him well, Yet doth He all praise excel; None can ever reach his due See -today before us laid Living and life-giving Bread, Theme for praise and joy profound; Bread which at the sacred board Was, by our incarnate Lord, Giv'n to his apostles round. Let the praise be loud ,and high; Sweet and reverent be the joy'Felt today in every breast; On this feast divine, Which records the origin of the glorious Eucharist. On this table of the new King, This the new laws off'ring Brings to end the olden rite. Here for empty shadows fled, Is reality instead; Here instead of darkness, light. What He did at supper seated, Christ ordained to be repeated, In his memory divine; ·Wherefore we, with adoration, Thus the Host of our salvation Consecrate from bread and wine. Taught by Christ the Church maintaineth, that the bread its substance changeth Into Flesh, the wine to Blood. Doth it pass thy comprehending? Faith, the law of light transcending, Leaps to things not understood. Here, beneath these signs, are hidden Priceless things, to sense forbidden; Signs, not things, r all we see,-Flesh from Bread, and Blood fTCJnl wine, Yet is Christ in either sign, All entire confessed to be. They, too, who of Him partake, sever not, nor rend, nor break, But entire their Lord receive. Whether one or thousands eat, All receive the self-same meat, nor the less for others leave. Lo, the wicked with the good Eat of this celestial food : Yet with ends how opposite! Life to these, 'tis death to tho·se: See how from like taking flows Difference truly infinite. Nor do thou doubts entertain When the Host is broken in twain; But he sure, each part contains What was in the whole before; 'This the simple sign alone Which has changed in size and form, Whilst the signified is one And the same for evermore. Lo, upon the altar lies, H idden deep from human eyes, Bread of angels from

th e skies, Made the food of mortal man: Children's meat, to dogs denied; In old types foresignified : In the manna" heaven supplied, Isaac, and the Paschal Lamb. Jesus, Shepherd, Bread indeed, Thou take pity on our need: Thou thy flock in safety feed, Thou protect us, Thou us lead To the land of heavenly grace. Thou who feedest us below, Source of all we have to know, Grant that, at thy feast of love. Sitting with the saints above, We may see Thee fact to face. Amen, alleluia.

Nicene Creed ( Credo)

The word ''Credo' ~ mea n s I . belieV'!!. The Nloene Creed, an

ampllfled form ot the Apostles' Creed Is a profession ' of fa1t~ adopt8li by the CounCil of Nice, 325 A . D., and th~ Council ot Constantinople, 381 A. D.

I };ELlE VE In one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, of all things, visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God, and born of ·the Father before all ages; God of God, light of light, true (j.),j of true God ; begotten not made; consubstantial with the Father, by Whom all things were made. Who for us men, and £01 our salvation, came down from heaven; and was incarnate by the Holy Ghost of the Virgin Mary; and was made man. He was erucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered, and

was buried. And the .third .day He rose again according to the Scriptures; and ascended into heaven; sitteth. at the right hand of the Father; and shall come again with glory to judge the living and the dead of Whose kingdom there shall be no end. An.d in the Holy Ghost, the lord and life-giver, Who proceedeth from the Father and the Son; Who with ~he Father and the Son together is adored and glorified; Who spoke by th~ Prophets. And one Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. I confess· one. Baptism ' for the remission of sins. And I look for th~ resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen .

. P. The Lord be with you: S. And with thy spirit.

The Offertory

Again facing the altar, the priest saYS: "Let us pcay," and reads the Offertory Verse. In the early Church, catechumens, unbelievers, public sinners w ere excluded trom the "Mass of the Faithful," which tollows.

Lev. 21, 6. The priests of the Lord offer incense and loaves to God, and therefore they shall be holy to their Q{)d, and shall not defile his name. Alleluia.

A Renewal of the Offertory . (At the Center of the Altar)

RECEIVE. 0 holy Trinity, this offering which we make to Thee in memory of the Passion, Resurrection, and Ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ: and in honor of blessed Mary ever-virgin, of ·blessed John the Baptist, of the holy Apostles Peter and

- PAGE 18-

Paul, of these, and of all sainh; that to them it ' may be for an increase of honor, but to us, of salvation; and may they vouchsafe to intercede for us in heaven, whose: memory we celebrate on earth. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen

Orate ·Fratre.; i. e. Pray Brethren rhls shows how Intimately those present participate

The Secret The prayers that tollow are caJled the "Secret" be

cause they are said In a low voice.

Of thy goodness, we beseech Thee, 0 Lord, grant to thy Church the gifts of unity and peace which are mystically represented- under the gifts we offer. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God,

Canon. the most solemn part of the Holy Sacrltlce; at High Mass, all stand. The priest, concluding the last Secret with "Through our Lord," etc. , raises his voice when he comes to the words :

- - PAGE 19 -

P. World without end. S. Amen. P. The Lord be with you: S. And with thy spirit. P. Lift up your hearts: S. We do lift them unto the Lord. P. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. S. It is meet and just.

It is truly meet and just, right and availing unto salvation, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto Thee, 0 holy Lord, Father almighty, everlasting God; for by the mystery of the Word made . flesh the light of thy glory hath shone anew upon the eyes of our mind; so that while we acknowledge Him as God se€n by men, we may be drawn by Him to the love of things unseen. And therefore with the Angels and Archangels, the thrones and dominions and the whole host of heavenly army we sing the hymn of thy glory, unceasingly, saying:

The Sanctua HOLY, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts. Heaven

and earth are full of thy glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he that cometh in the name of rhe Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

Canon of the Mass W.ith the ringing of the bell at

the "Sanctus" begins the Canon of the Mass. Canon here means "rule," because the s e prayers a.re seldom cha.nged and then but very slightly.

- PAGE 20-

For the Entire Church THEE, therefore, most merciful Father. we sup

pliantly pray and entreat through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, to accept and bless these gifts and

. presents, these holy and perfect Sacrifices: which we offer untO Thee in the first place for thy holy Catholic Church, that Thou wouldst vouchsafe to grant untO her peace, as also to preserve, unite, and govern her throughout the world: tOgether with thy servant Pius our Pope, and (Name) our (A,.ch) Bishop, and all orthodox believers and professors of the Catholic and Apostolic faith.

For Definite. Persons and All Present BE MINDFUL, 0 Lord, of thy servants and hand

maids, (name them). And of all here present, ·whose faith and devotion are known unto Thee; who themselves, or for whom we offer up to Thee this Sacrifice of praise: for them, and all belonging to them: for the redemption of their souls: for the hope of their health and welfare: and who now pay their vows to Thee, the everlasting, living and true God.

The Last Gospel (At the Left or Gospel Side)

P. The Lord be with you: S. And with thy spirit. P. The beginning of the holy

Gospel according to St. John. S. Glory be to Thee, 0 Lord.

John 1, 1-14.-ln th~ beginning was the Word. and the Word was with God; anu the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him and without Him was made nothing that was made. In b.:"!' was Hfe, and the life was the light of men. And I.he light shines in the darkness : and the darkness grasped it not. There was a man, one sent from nod. whose name was John. This man came as a witness, to bear witness concerning the light, that all might believe through him. He was not himself the light. but was to bear witness to the light. It was the true light that enlightens every man who comes into this world. He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world knew Him not. He came unto his own, and his own received Him not. Bllt to as many as received Him He gave the power of becoming sons of God; to those who believe in his name: Who were born not of blood. nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. And THE WORn WAS MADE FLESH, am! rlwelt amon~ us. And we saw his glory-glory as of the only-begotten of the Father-full of gr!lce and truth.

S. Thanks be to God.
