He is the quintessential late bloomer. It was only after retiring from corporate America that Hal Stewart began his sculpting career. Since then he has created a myriad of bronzes for museums, galleries and collectors throughout the world.
As a young child growing up in Illinois, Stewart was fascinated with clay. “I’d make little figurines from the clay found in nearby creeks,” he said. “Then in high school I made nude figures in clay. My teacher said she’d enter my work in the school’s art show if I promised to stop with
the nudes. I didn’t -- but she entered my work anyway.”
Stewart served in the U.S. Navy and attended college before moving to Arizona in 1968. Employed in the construction industry, he worked in sales and service for the next 32 years.
“During that time I’d dapple in oil painting every couple of years but I really had no time for art,” Stewart explained. “I was focused on my job primarily. I also had a small farm and ranch in Wilcox and raised show horses in the Phoenix area.”
In 2000 Stewart retired. And then he rewired. He was sculpting.
“The first real piece I did was of an Indian’s head. A friend of mine said if I’d put a body on that Indian he’d pay for the casting and buy the first one. When I sold a second I thought it might be easy to become a serious sculptor!”
Stewart made five additional sculptures before attending Scottsdale Art School to study the anatomy of the head, hands, feet and muscles. “I carefully selected my instructors,” he explained. “I didn’t want them influencing my style. I liked sculpting my way.”
His way has proven successful. Stewart’s work

A trio of events acknowledging the sacrifice of our nation’s military personnel will take place in the North Valley on Saturday and Sunday.
Dave Woellner, a 90-year-old World War II veteran, will be one of the grand marshals in the 8th annual Daisy Mountain Veterans Parade and Picnic set for 10 a.m., Saturday. The parade route, which winds around the community park, is complete with floats, bands and military units, saluting
all of the country’s veterans including special tribute to POWs, Purple Heart recipients and wounded warriors.
Woellner, now a Peoria resident, who regularly speaks to school students about his 40 years of military service, said he was honored when asked to be in the parade.
After signing up for military service, seven days after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Woellner went on to have a 40 year career in the military, serving both during the Korean War as well as Vietnam as a member of the U.S. Air Force.
“It seems so few people know our country’s military history anymore,” he said. “It’s disappointing to see the educational decline, in particular the areas of civics and history, which get brushed over. I am impressed though with the current generation. They seem as though they’re willing to work a little harder. They seem to understand the idea of wanting to make our country the best.”

included being a prisoner of war during World War II, from Dec. 29, 1944 through the end of the war in June of 1945.
“Yeah, my career in combat ended rather abruptly,” Woellner said. “We were hit by ground fire while we were close to 30,000 feet. The flak exploded below my bomb bay. It severed the fuel lines and started a fire. We had to parachute from high altitude. When we got to the ground there were probably 50 – 60 German citizens there waiting for us and not too happy we had bombed their town.”
Woellner said he feared he might be killed by the angry mob, but militia arrived and took he and his fellow soldiers into custody.
After six months largely spent in isolation Woellner said he and his fellow soldiers were finally freed by Russian forces.
On Saturday Woellner will ride in the parade and then
continue with the festivities, which include a family picnic from 12:30 – 3 p.m. in the ACC Community Park. A food court, beer garden, live entertainment as well as bounce houses for kids will be available. The event will also serve as a drop-off location for Toys for Tots.
For information about the parade and lunch go to daisymtnvets.org.
At 10 a.m. on Sunday there will be a ceremony at the Anthem Veterans Memorial in the ACC Community park.
The ceremony will feature dignitary guest speakers, live
music, and poetry readings, and will commemorate the one-year anniversary of the memorial.
At 11:11 a.m., the event will culminate when sunlight will shine though all five pillars of the memorial, illuminating the mosaic of the Great Seal of the United States at its base.
Participants are encouraged to bring a blanket or a few extra chairs as seating at this event will be limited. Bottled water will be provided.
The final ceremony of the weekend is the 4th annual “Salute to Our Veterans” set for 3 – 5 p.m., Sunday in Carefree Amphitheater in the Carefree Desert Gardens.
The event will feature a mixture of patriotic and military music by Don Morosic and his Main Event Swing Band. Returning to the event to sing the Star Spangled Banner and God Bless America will be vocalist April Manchester-Miller. By popular request, the finale will once again include the bugle call, The Last Post, followed by TAPS on “dueling bugles”. Marcelle Chase, a Belgian-born Carefree resident will share her story, “Five years from Occupation to Liberation”.
Added this year will be a reading of The Battle Hymn of the Republic by MC Ted Dimon.
Barbara Hatch, founder of the Veterans Heritage project will be in attendance with her students from Cactus Shadows High School. The Heritage Quilt will be on display. Incidentally, later this month, Barbara will receive the 2012 Arizona History Teacher of the Year award from the State Board of Education.
Packages from Home (packagesfromhome.org) will also be present to accept items for shipment to troops serving overseas, or donations to help with shipping costs. The mostneeded items are drink mix singles (i.e. coffee and hot chocolate), jelly in 14-16 oz. plastic jars, trail mix, small jars of peanut butter (plastic containers), socks, travel-size tissue packs, and foot/body powder. Alternatively, PFH representatives will be on hand to gladly accept any cash donations, since each package costs $12.95 to ship.
The Association of the United States Army will have a representative available to assist any veterans with questions. The Carefree Kiwanis Club (kiwaniscarefree.org) will be providing light refreshments.

SNOWBIRDSWELCOME!
has been exhibited at many prestigious art shows, including the Sonoran Arts League’s Hidden in the Hills Tour. “I’ve received much recognition,” he said. “I’m grateful and humbled.”
Stewart was recently contacted by the Desert Caballeros Museum in Wickenburg. Its board unanimously recommended his sculptures to be featured next year, June through October 2013.
“When they called me I was floored. I asked if they were sure they were talking to the right person,” Stewart exclaimed. “This museum has many originals from the western masters, including Thomas Moran and Fredrick Remington. To show my work at Desert Caballeros is an honor beyond belief. I’m still floating on a cloud!”
Stewart considers his membership in the Sonoran Arts League an honor as well and boasts how proud he is of the many outreach programs the League brings to the community. “It’s an amazing group of artists helping people. I’m privileged to participate.”
The artist gives generously of his time. He volunteers throughout Arizona giving talks to art clubs and organizations. “It’s fun to start a sculpture in front of people,” Stewart said. “I begin with a metal armature and add clay. Within 45 minutes I’ve created a basic human form on a wire frame that’s movable. Spectators are fascinated.”
Stewart devotes thought and research into his work. “My first life-size piece was Pima Basket
Carrier,” Stewart said. “I wanted it to be authentic so I met with the Pima tribal officials to learn about their culture. They were grateful that I consulted with them first.”
In the summer of 2005 Stewart was selected by the US Park Service to be the artist in residence at the north rim of the Grand Canyon. “For three weeks I worked and interacted with people on site. At the end of the program I donated my Hopi Shooting Star Kachina to the Grand Canyon Art Council. And today it’s on exhibit at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport,” he said.
For the past nine years Stewart has shown his creations at the Hidden in the Hills Studio Tour and Sale which is annually presented by Sonoran Arts League. “It’s a great gala that kicks off an exciting art season,” he said. “I’m thrilled to be on the Tour.”
Stewart will be at the Coyote Crossing Studio #34. He’ll be joined by fellow Sonoran Arts League members Dick Mueller (pencil), Karen Friend (gourd/mixed media), Alan and Penny Lowy (photography) and Justine Mantor-Waldie (ink, acrylic, pastel.)

Following her team’s opening round win in the Division II state volleyball tournament Cactus Shadows coach Michelle Gardiner was hopeful the old adage that it’s hard to beat a good team three straight times would hold up one more time.
After avenging two regular season losses to No. 10 Liberty, thanks to a four set 23-25, 25-23, 25-12, 25-15 on Oct. 30, the Falcons went into Thursday’s quarterfinal matchup with No. 2 Notre Dame hopeful they could turn the tables on the Saints and pull an upset.
“Notre Dame is solid,” Gardiner said. “We’ll have to have all six players at all systems go, but I think we’re a different defensive team than when we saw them the other two times. If we can reduce our errors I think we’ll have a strong chance to come up with a win.”
Instead for the third straight time this season the Saints swept Cactus Shadows, bringing the No. 7 seeded Falcons season to a close in a 25-23, 25-18, 25-16 defeat.
For the Falcons, who were a non-playoff team in 2012, finishing just a game over .500 at 15-14, it was a bounce back campaign as a program accustomed to being in the
mix in the state tournament went 24-13 under the first-year Falcons coach.
In the team’s first round win over Liberty, senior Carly Lenzen, the team’s longest tenured player and a four year varsity performer came up big, recording a team-high 23 kills on the night.
“It’s not a secret that she’s our top weapon,” senior Madi Horn said following the match. “When Carly gets it going we all get more confident.”
Early on the Falcons appeared tentative, consistently tipping balls at the net rather than swinging and going for kills.
“I think a little nervous,” Gardiner said. “In one of the timeouts in the second set I was telling them that we weren’t playing bad, but it just seemed like everything was a struggle, that we weren’t smooth in anything we were doing.”
After dropping the opening set 23-25, in a game they trailed by three or four almost from the outset, the second set was lining up very similarly. When Liberty senior Lauren Anderson came up with a block to make the score 20-15 the possibility of falling behind 2-0 seemed very real for the host Falcons.
“Something clicked and I just told myself there’s no way we’re not playing again Thursday,” Horn said. “We weren’t going
to lose our last match on our home court.”
Instead Lenzen topped Anderson down the stretch of set two as the two teams fed their top weapons, with Lenzen responding with four kills out of the Falcons final eight points as Cactus Shadows rallied to knot the match with a 25-23 victory of their own.
“When I’m feeling confident I let it be known that I want the ball,” Lensen said.
Gardiner said the momentum swing following the second set win was pronounced.
“It was like getting a 100 pound gorilla off our backs,” she said. “It was almost like once we got the match even we relaxed and were able to play the way we’re capable.”
Having had to play catchup throughout the first two sets Cactus Shadows flipped the script in the third set, rushing out to a 13-3 lead and never letting the Pumas get closer than eight the rest of the set.
The fourth set was more competitive, but Cactus Shadows maintained the advantage almost from the outset, eventually closing out the match with a 25-15 win.
“The change was we started digging a better quality ball, which allowed us to have a better flow offensively,” Gardiner said.

MARC BUCKHOUTMANAGING EDITOR
He hasn’t even been in his first race yet, but Chris Yano can already sense that he is gaining ground on his competition.
The 33-year-old Anthem resident is preparing to compete in the Road to Indy Series. After devoting the last three years of his life to his company, Brickyard Internet Marketing, while raising a young family with three children, Yano is turning his attention back to his passion of racing.
Before he ever races in the 2013 Star Mazda Championship Series Yano had plenty of work to accomplish. In September he nailed down a lead sponsor, SK Energy Shots owned by rap star 50 Cent.
“To be attached to that type of celebrity is huge for exposure,” Yano said. “And it’s a brand new demographic for the series.”
With the finances in place to make competing in the 14-race season a reality, Yano is now able to focus his attention on getting accustomed to the car he will be competing in.
Acknowledging his competitors, who are largely in their early 20s, have far more time behind the wheel of the cars they will be racing, Yano said he’s confident he can overcome that disadvantage.
In September he was in Sonoma, Calif. to do some testing.
“It was exciting and nerve racking all at the same time,”
he said. “That track is a narrow course, but I’d say it was a very successful day. I was able to learn the car, which was great. The biggest thing is getting to be comfortable.”
He said the biggest adjustment is understanding the vehicle’s braking capabilities.
“In an open wheel car it’s a much lighter vehicle,” he said. “You can brake much later. It’s a huge difference. So it’s figuring out when to shift, how
fast you can go into turns, how late into the turn you can wait before you brake.”
With that experience under his belt Yano headed home to Indianapolis, not far from his home in Crawford, Indiana, where his love of racing was born.
Last month he got another chance to do some testing, this

time getting to race at the iconic track, home to the Indy 500.
“I’d pictured the moment so many times,” Yano said. “There’s so much history there. I imagined getting goosebumps and feeling emotional when I hit that famous front stretch. The reality was I didn’t think about any of that. When you’re going from 170 miles per hour down to 60 miles per hour in order to make a sharp right turn you’re totally concentrating on the car, shifting, braking. It wasn’t until I came down pit
lane that the emotion started to hit me. That’s when I got the goose bumps.”
Between now and March, when the tour season starts, Yano has to lock down which racing team he will become a part of and then continue to get in as much practice time as he possibly can.
“Leaving Indy I felt relieved,” he said. “I know I can do it. Everybody at the track has been driving open wheel cars for years. That was my second time in an open wheel car
and yet I was able to stay within three seconds of the lap times they were turning in. The more time I get in these cars the more time I can start chipping off their lead.”
Yano plans to do most of his practicing at Firebird Raceway and Phoenix International Raceway.

STAFF REPORT
In a letter dated Oct. 31, the Maricopa County Health Department issued a letter about a possible case of rubella at Boulder Creek High School. Letters were handed out to students last week.
Officials say because it’s so contagious just one case can put a lot of people at risk. Those that are pregnant, or haven’t been vaccinated are especially vulnerable.
Symptoms of rubella can be very mild. They include a low-grade fever, a pink rash that starts on the face and spreads to the chest and back, swollen lymph nodes and a runny nose.
The disease is spread through coughing, sneezing and contact with fluids from the nose,
mouth and throat.Symptoms may not appear
for two to three weeks after exposure. Doctors say people who are infected can be contagious for as long as two weeks.
The disease also poses serious health risks to unborn babies.
The Maricopa County Department of Health warned parents to watch for any symptoms over the next few weeks. If symptoms are noticed officials say those afflicted should contact a health care provider. The health care provider will offer instruction on how and when to visit their office without exposing others.
Those that do not have a health care provider are advised to call an urgent care center or an emergency room and advise them before coming in.
Officials ask that parents notify Boulder Creek High School and the Maricopa County Department of Public Health at 602-506-6767 if they or their child develops symptoms of rubella.

Campaign finance reform needed to draw back
advertising onslaughtWhat concerns me most regarding the campaigning and
marketing onslaughts we’ve endured during this race to the White House, is that commercials work. If they didn’t we wouldn’t be inundated endlessly by soda, drug, beer, injury lawyer, auto sales, insurance companies, etc- on T.V., in magazines, billboards and internet. 30 and 60 second sound bytes orchestrated (masterfully) to persuade you to buy a product or service aimed not at your intellect but directly at your emotions instead, is the major source of information and decision making for most Americans who are far too exhausted from working and raising a family to do any in depth research to check the validity of these often outrageously disingenuous claims advertised. Professional marketing knows well how powerful the results of covert, subliminal and emotionally appealing advertising can be. That’s why millions are spent on them. Because they work and are well worth the investment.
To reduce something as important as a Presidential election to these sorts of schemes belittles not only the political arena as a whole, but insults every American voter as well. The implementation of unrestricted Super Pac money has created so much unsubstantiated hype that I feel like the Super Bowl, not Election Day is playing Nov. 6th.
Why can’t we just see candidates themselves be interviewed unbiasedly at length and in depth on television so that their “real” positions and thinking on issues can be thoroughly investigated and revealed? The media scored the debates like it was a WWF match; the winner was whoever came across with the best “appearance”. Campaign reform is essential if we are to have educated informed voting which is the very basis for our psuedo Democracy-the best that money can buy.
Harvey Rabichow, Anthem
Storm offers reminder about self reliance
H e r e ’ s the big l e s s o n f r o m m e g a -s t o r m S a n d y : M o t h e r N a t u r e s n e e r s
at high tech, mocks modern convenience and couldn’t care less about what kind of person you are. She will smack you if she wants to.
As we have become addicted to machines, many of us have forgotten about nature. We must have gizmos. Sandy laughed and took them away. Power, gone. Internet, dark. Cellphones, not happening. Even your landline phone, not available, because “all circuits are busy.”
Suddenly, it’s 1850 with one exception: battery-operated flashlights and radios.
So what is the lesson here? Actually, there are a few. First: No government
agency can help you when disaster strikes. Any assistance will be after the fact and painstakingly slow.
Second: In order to ride out any storm effectively, you should be self-reliant and resilient. That means you have to anticipate problems and have
some solutions at the ready. For example, where I live
on Long Island, the power infrastructure is a disaster and has been for years. The power company, LIPA, simply cannot keep the juice flowing under duress. I have accepted that, and so I bought a generator. However, during Sandy, the generator did not work. You can imagine how many four-letter words were uttered. But I had a Plan B. I know some guys who can repair generators, and they fixed mine very quickly. I have a long-term relationship with these guys and will reward them.
So, I rode out the storm pretty well, and that’s good because there are children in my home.
Not once did I think the local, state or federal government was going to help me in any way. When President Obama speaks about government being there for you, I roll my eyes. In the history of mankind, no government has ever been there
for the individual. Ever. Sadly, we are becoming a
nation dependent on other people and very reliant on machines. Sandy’s destruction brought us back to the 19th century, as the collapse of the machines was something to see. Many people were lost without their appliances because they are not self-reliant. They do not think ahead. They do not figure out Plan B because they don’t even have a Plan A.
Life is hard, and then you die. But while you’re alive, you’ll be far better off if you forget about the big-government nonsense, deemphasize the machines and begin incorporating the discipline of self-reliance into your life.
Sorry for the lecture, but my father always said that out of bad things can come some good. Americans need to wise up, and with the election just a few days away, we have an opportunity to do so.
We the people need leadership that will solve problems, be fiscally responsible and promote individual responsibility. The charlatans that promise big-government protection will always be around, but they are no match for Sandy and her furious friends.
That is the lesson of this terrible storm.
