Family Living
(ARA) - Ah, the holidays are nearly here onceagain — a busy time when most homes are bustling
with visiting friends and family, shopping, cooking, parties and present-wrapping. Although parentshave many things to check off on their to-do lists, they continually look for ways to navigate this hec-tic time and keep family at the top of the list. This is
Fun and games help create family holiday traditionsoften done by finding affordable activities thatbring the whole family together and fostering tradi-
tions that can be carried on year after year. This is a time when keeping things simple will yield the most positive results. Tradition doesn’thave to mean outdated or boring, and many annu-al rituals now have a modern twist. An afternoon
walk or a game of touch football gets everyoneactive and outside. A day of cookie baking and dec-orating is fun, delicious and creates lasting memo-
ries. Many families enjoy watching annual holiday television specials like “How the Grinch StoleChristmas,” “Frosty the Snowman” and “It’s A
Wonderful Life.” This year, the iconic holiday favorite, “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” comesto a fun and interactive DVD board game that willbe the perfect activity for a family game night.
The benefits of holiday activities are boundless,
and time spent together as a family is priceless. All

of these suggestions promote communication, working together, fun and building annual family customs that can be enjoyed every holiday season.
The first step to make these activities a success isto get the family excited. Let the majority decide
what they want to do. Next, if cookie baking is the
activity of choice, assign age-appropriate tasks foreach family member. If everyone is going to sitdown and play an interactive game like “Rudolphthe Red-Nosed Reindeer the DVD Game,” “SceneIt?” or another classic like “20 Questions” or“Charades,” designate a start time and give every-one a role. Perhaps the youngest child chooses thesnacks and the oldest sets up the game board,
cards or DVD player. If there is a large age-range,team everyone up with a partner who can help. Besure to get rid of distractions, let phones go tovoicemail and don’t allow PDAs.
Set aside a specific amount of time for the activi-ty. Making sure to end a game or sport before kidsget bored or frustrated is key, and that gives parentsa set time to resume errands and projects. Also, be
flexible whenever possible. Bend the rules a bit if itmakes family games more fun. Don’t worry about amess in the kitchen until the baking is done, and letkids help even if it means the project takes longer.
No matter how you choose to keep everyoneentertained during the holiday season, the mostimportant thing is to enjoy being together. Theseare the memories that will last the longest, no mat-
ter what the season brings.

Home Improvement TIP OF THE MONTH
When considering a kitchen remodel, make sure yougive some thought to the quality of your finish andwho is backing up your investment (are they a tailgate cabinet maker or a Fortune 500 greencompany). UV baked on catalyzed finishes are onlyavailable out of this state, from custommanufacturers. These finishes deliver far superiordurability with beauty and elegance that will
compliment your home while being a wise choice formany years to come. Also, demand your cabinetry toinclude a lifetime guarantee.
Quartz countertops also offer great warranties alongwith antibacterial agents integrated into the surface. Inaddition, they never need to be sealed and areextremely durable to heat and are scratch resistant.

Get moving to treat and prevent arthritis
(ARA) - More than just aches and pains, arthri-tis is a chronic disease that damages joints and
can lead to loss of function or disability. In fact, itis the most common cause of disability in theUnited States, affecting 50 million Americans or22 percent of the total population.
For years it was believed that people witharthritis should not exercise because movementcould cause further damage to joints. Now, physi-cal activity is recognized as playing an integralrole in the prevention and treatment of arthritis. According to the Arthritis Foundation, exerciseprovides relief from pain, improves physical func-tion and quality of life, and delays the onset of disability without worsening symptoms or theprogression of the disease.
Unfortunately, the already staggering social and
economic impact of arthritis in the United States
is set to explode in coming decades. A new gov-ernment report found that the number of adults
with arthritis has increased by almost 1 millionsince 2003 to 2005 and it’s estimated that arthritis will affect 67 million Americans in 2030.
The effects of arthritis can be devastating, butself-management strategies such as weight lossand increasing physical activity can lessen painand improve function, and may prevent or limitthe impact of arthritis on daily activities. “Forevery one pound you lose, that’s four pounds of pressure off each knee,” says Dr. Patience H. White, the Arthritis Foundation’s vice president of public health. In addition, losing as little as 11pounds can reduce your risk of developing kneeosteoarthritis by 50 percent.
It is important for Americans to make daily
movement a year-round goal. While it may seem

(ARA) - During severe flu seasons, nearly 50,000 Americans die from the disease, according to the
American Lung Association. While medical expertscan’t predict the severity and length of this year’sflu season, they do expect the H1N1 strain to bepresent again and to spread across the nation.
Flu season in the United States typically rangesfrom November through March and sometimeslasts into early spring. Now is the time to start pro-tecting yourself and your family. The most impor-
tant step is to get vaccinated, says the Centers forDisease Control and Prevention (CDC). Here aresome additional ways to prepare for flu season.
• Take precautions. While the CDC recommendseveryone six months and older get vaccinated, it isespecially important for children, pregnant women, the elderly and those with chronic health condi-tions. The H1N1 strain of the virus will automati-

• Practice proper hand hygiene. Wash hands withsoap and water for at least 20 seconds. If you’re onthe go, keep a hand wipe or sanitizer product with
you. Also, teach children to cover their nose andmouth with either a tissue or elbow - but not theirhands.
• Tell the difference. The flu and the commoncold share many of the same symptoms and it can
sometimes be difficult to tell them apart. A key way to identify the flu is the sudden onset of a highfever. A fever is your body’s natural response to aninfection. However, it’s important to know that noteveryone with the flu will have a fever.
Other flu symptoms can include a headache, general aches and pains, fatigue, exhaustion, stuffy nose and cough. The right diagnosis can make the
