MCSO investigating fatal stabbing in New River

NEW RIVER ndash One man is dead of stabbing wounds after a deadly fight last weekend The Maricopa County Sheriff rsquos Office is investigating his death

About 1 am on July 26 MCSO officers answered an emergency call regarding an injured man at the Roadrunner Saloon

ldquoSheriff rsquos Deputies arrived on scene and discovered the male later identified as Roman Fernandez Sr was down in the parking lotrdquo noted MCSO Deputy Joaquin Enriquez ldquoDeputies immediately rendered first aid until relieved by the Daisy Mountain Fire Departmentrdquo Despite the efforts of the first responders Fernandez died at the scene

ldquoIt was later reported to Sheriff rsquos deputies that Roman

had been in a fight located on the outside patio area of the bar and later found bleeding in the parking lot where deputies found himrdquo Enriquez noted

Homicide detectives are currently gathering evidence and investigating the stabbing

ldquoThis case is being investigated as a homicide and we do not have any suspects in custody as of yetrdquo Enriquez said

MCSO Man severely burned after suicide attempt

ANTHEM ndash A tragic suicide attempt resulted in a man being severely burned

On the evening of July 21 Maricopa County Sheriff rsquos Office Deputies were called to Anthem home due to a reported domestic dispute

ldquoAfter arriving on scene they (deputies) spoke with one of the parties involved who was parked down the street from the residencerdquo said MCSO Deputy Joaquin Enriquez ldquoShe stated she and her boyfriend were involved in a physical altercation and that he was suicidalrdquo

Deputies then went to the home to make contact with the man

ldquoAs they arrived at the home Deputies heard him tell them he was in the backyardrdquo Enriquez said ldquoUpon entering the backyard MCSO Deputies

along with Phoenix Police Officers saw the man sitting in a chair and pouring gasoline over himself He was flicking a lighter with one hand and held a cigarette in the otherrdquo

Law enforcement officers pleaded with the man to reconsider what he was doing Sadly the manrsquos body caught fire The deputies on-scene worked as fast as possible to save him and were able to put out the flames The man was transported by air to the burn unit of Maricopa Medical Center with severe injuries

ldquoMCSOrsquos District IV Detectives were called to the scene and took over the investigationrdquo Enriquez said

Randy Johnson reflects on parentsrsquo support in HOF induction speech

Long before Randy Johnson was dominating hitters at the major league level the lefthander was tossing tennis balls at his familyrsquos wooden garage door in Livermore California

Johnsonrsquos enthusiasm for pitching would eventually shake the nails in the garage door loose

ldquoMy dad would come out after about a half an hour with a hammer put the hammer down and say lsquoWhen yoursquore done playing catch against the wall make sure you pound all those nails inrsquordquo Johnson said in his Baseball Hall of Fame induction speech Sunday

During the 18-minute speech Johnson opened up about his personal life telling stories of how his parents supported him in his younger years

ldquoHe also took the time as a police officer when his shift was over to come in his police uniform and watch me pitch in high schoolrdquo Johnson said of his father who passed away in 1992 after Johnsonrsquos third season with the Seattle Mariners ldquoIrsquove never forgot those momentsrdquo

Johnson was known for being one of the most if not the single

most intimidating pitchers to ever step on a mound but when speaking of his familyrsquos impact on his young life the 6-foot-10-inch Hall of Fame inductee had trouble holding back emotion

ldquoThen therersquos my mom the backbone to our familyrdquo Johnson said ldquoShe raised six children and still had a full-time job and came home and fed us and took care of all of usrdquo

ldquoThank you mom yoursquore the Hall of Famerrdquo

Of Johnsonrsquos 22 years in the major leagues 18 were either spent in Seattle or Phoenix

He won five Cy Young Awards 303 games and struck out 4875 batters in his career

In 2001 Johnson won a World Series with the Diamondbacks and was named co-MVP

Sunday Johnson became the first Hall of Fame inductee to be enshrined with a Diamondbacks hat on his plaque

ldquoIt goes up there as one of our biggest points of pride thatrsquos for surerdquo said Diamondbacks President and CEO Derrick Hall prior to the plaquersquos hanging ldquoNow the reality has set in and I couldnrsquot be prouder at this time to know that (Johnsonrsquos) going to have a plaque that

will be installed (Sunday) afternoon in the National Baseball Hall of Famerdquo

Johnsonrsquos achievements in the desert have helped bring attention to a franchise that doesnrsquot receive a large portion of the national spotlight

ldquoI think therersquos certain accomplishments that draw attention from baseball fans and media members nationallyrdquo Hall said ldquoAnd thatrsquos obviously winning a championship which we did in 2001 and itrsquos making it to the playoffs as we have several times

ldquoBut I think that having a player enshrined into the Hall of Fame brings in instant credibility as well to your history and to the level of talent that yoursquod have wear your uniformrdquo

Though Johnsonrsquos speech changed tones throughout the biggest laugh came when Johnson shared some self-deprecating humor with the fans in attendance

ldquoSo many of the reasons that Irsquove been inducted into the Hall of Fame are long gone nowrdquo Johnson said ldquoI no longer have a fastball I no longer have a bad mullet And my scowl is long gonerdquo

Arizona Wildlife Views magazine wins award

NORTH VALLEY ndash At least 31 of the 50 states publish a magazine about wildlife and outdoor recreation promoting appreciation for Americarsquos natural heritage In any given year only one of those magazines can be named ldquothe best state wildlife magazine in the nationrdquo

This year that title was awarded to Arizonarsquos magazine Arizona Wildlife Views

ldquoWersquore the best magazine yoursquove never heard ofrdquo said editor Heidi Rayment who has helmed the magazine for the past 11 years ldquoWhen people who appreciate nature and the outdoors discover Arizona Wildlife Views they often tell me lsquoI canrsquot believe I never heard of this beforersquordquo

Published by the Arizona Game and Fish Department since the 1950s Arizona Wildlife Views doesnrsquot have a big advertising budget to bring it to the attention of potential readers All of its resources are devoted to developing articles that educate people about wildlife conservation and help readers enjoy outdoor activities such as fishing hunting and the shooting sports The 48-page magazine offers outstanding

photography as well setting readers eye-to-eye with wildlife

ldquoIn a state that holds more than 800 native wildlife species mdash the most of any inland state mdash we never run out of good materialrdquo Rayment said

Arizonarsquos wildlife magazine earned the top honor this year in the state wildlife magazine category from the Association for Conservation Information a nonprofit association of information and education professionals representing state federal and Canadian agencies and private conservation organizations The magazine also earned kudos for writing and design A one-year subscription to Arizona Wildlife Views costs $850 for six issues including a calendar issue featuring winners of an annual wildlife photo contest Every subscription includes access to a digital version for viewing on computers smartphones and e-readers

Truck catches fire in Country Club

ANTHEM - A truck caught fire in the Anthem Country Club on Wednesday July 22

Daisy Mountain Fire Departmentrsquos Engine 142 responded to the call They were on the scene quickly and were able to extinguish the flames rapidly and kept the

fire from spreading beyond the garage Minimal damage was caused to the home and no injuries were reported from the fire

It is unknown at this time what caused the truck to catch fire

NORTH VALLEY ndash The summer months are a busy time at Maricopa Countyrsquos animal shelters with more than 100 dogs and cats entering their doors each day

To help get the animals out of the shelter and into loving homes quickly the County is running a summer-long adoption promotion The Dog Days of Summer promotion kicked off in June and will continue through the end of August During that time all dogs under six months of age are $75 dogs over six months of age are $20 cats under six months of age are $20 and cats over six months of age have waived adoption fees All animals must be spayed or neutered prior to going home Dogs over three months of age will be rabies vaccinated and go home with their County dog license

proposed in the five-year review report the Commission proposes to amend rules to establish requirements to allow the surrender of an unused hunt permit-tag allow the transfer of an unused big game tag to a nonprofit organization that affords hunting opportunities and experiences to veterans with service-connected disabilities and establish an application process for a qualified nonprofit organization to implement recent legislative amendments resulting from Laws 2014 2nd Regular Session Ch 55 Section 1 The Commission is also amending necessary rule language to increase consistency between Commission rules and ensure conformity with the Arizona Administrative Procedures Act and the Secretary of Statersquos rulemaking format and style requirements and standards

The Commission anticipates the proposed rulemaking will benefit the public by creating more opportunities for the use of wildlife resources with few costs and maintaining hunting opportunities

Phoenix early voting begins

PHOENIX ndash Early voting for the Phoenix August 2015 Mayor and Council Election begins this week Voters may cast an early ballot during business hours at Phoenix City Hall 200 W Washington St 15th floor from 8 am to 5 pm from Thursday July 30 through Friday Aug 21

Phoenix voters who are on the permanent early voting list will begin to receive early ballots on Thursday July 30 If residents are not on the PEVL and wish to receive an early ballot by mail a signed written request must be received by 5 pm Friday Aug 14 Request forms are available online at phoenixgovelections and at city public service counters and libraries

Voted early ballots must be received by the City Clerk no later than 7 pm on Election Day Aug 25 Voters should allow sufficient time for mail delivery by Election Day The United States Postal Service advises allowing 3 to 5 days

for delivery of first class mail Voted early ballots also may be delivered to any voting location during voting hours

Voters who complete their ballots early are encouraged to return the ballot as soon as it is voted Returning voted ballots as early as possible provides more time for signature verification and processing so that final election results are available sooner

Accessible voting devices that permit voters with disabilities to vote independently will be available at all voting locations

PHOENIX ndash Eric Johnson has been appointed Community amp Economic Development Deputy Director for the City of Phoenix

Wondering where all of the neighbors have gone Finding your streets and roads particularly empty I have found the missing masses We are all in San Diego The locals call us ldquoZoniesrdquo poking gentle fun at us Californians claim that every other person in their state is a vacationing Arizonan from Memorial Day through Labor Day There are jokes made about us but we donrsquot care Wersquore too cool at the beach to worry about much

Life is different here Surfboards and fishing poles are the dayrsquos essentials since iPads computers and phones are silenced all drowned out by roaring waves Important matters are usually centered around which bait is best for an early morning catch Finding sand crabs is a big ritual Lures and hooks have to be organized Poles and lines have to set-up just right

Surfboards have to be waxed in order to get a good ride Wet suits have to be rinsed every night and waves need to be caught at optimal times during the day Tides need to be understood so you can push off

at the right spot Lots of things have to be considered in order to make it safely (in one piece) back to shore Oh and letrsquos not think about jellyfish and sharks

Life holds many pleasures some common ones that require nothing more than time and curiosity Have you felt a starfish lately Therersquos nothing in the world quite like it Whenrsquos the last time you walked barefoot outdoors in the sand Could you spend an afternoon watching waves Do you know the ldquosecret techniquerdquo used by the pros when building sandcastles (Adding water ndash lots of water while they build) Oh did I mention that one to four days after the full or new moon the grunions (little fish) slither up on the beach to lay their eggs They come out after ten at night so walking the beach with a flashlight waiting to witness this surreal and amazing phenomena becomes an important ritual Hundreds of silvery glimmering fish all beaching themselves is quite a sight

Getting back to surfing it has occurred to me that I may be way past my prime when it comes to managing the long-board It is not an easy sport The grandsons seem better suited for it I always try to sail fearlessly on one big wave that will carry me in a time capsule of white foam above a blue sea towards a white shore If I can do it right it lasts just a few moments but the rush will linger all year long If I do it wrong (most of the time) it feels like a train-wreck with a mouthful of saltwater Why do kids seem to surf naturally

I usually ponder these and other mysteries while at the beach Some questions have no answers Have you ever noticed that a two-year old with squat little legs can out-run just about any adult Why do we think that television and video games matter so much when children can go for a week with nothing more than a bucket shovel sand and waves How can the moon in the sky control the tides on the shore Why does the sun seem to sink faster when itrsquos falling over an ocean Hmmmore mysteries to ponder

Why do sea creatures wash up on shore A few years ago near the end of our trip thousands of giant squid washed up in the La Jolla Cove Even with dozens of volunteers trying desperately to throw them back to sea most died Imagine seeing an entire beach with one-eyed monsters gasping for breath What happened Marine biologists didnrsquot know and called it a ldquofreak phenomenonrdquo of nature We may have some weird-looking wildlife in the Arizona but trust me when I tell you that nothing is more terrifying than a beach full of squid

The oddest and ugliest of Godrsquos creatures still deserves a helping hand Throwing them back in the water one squid at a time a volunteer was asked ldquoWhy bother With so many squid washed up it wonrsquot make a differencerdquo The volunteer answered back as he tossed a squid out to sea ldquoTo this one it will make a differencerdquo

Thatrsquos it The true meaning of life Live it one wave at a time make a difference one squid at a time run like a two-year old play like a kid in the sand and touch as many starfish as possible Remain curious so you can enjoy the wonder of a midnight walk in the light of a full moon to watch grunions make their way to shore More insights might be coming Dear Readers but my board needs waxing Until next week stay cool hang ten Surf rsquos up

Officials Arizonarsquos slip in state-funded pension ranks no cause for concern

NORTH VALLEYndash Funding for Arizonarsquos state-run pension funds fell by more than 20 percent from 2003 to 2013 but the almost 600000 state workers covered have no reason to worry about their retirement officials said

Arizonarsquos funding decline was outlined in a Pew Charitable Trusts report last week that detailed a nearly $968 billion shortfall in state-run pension systems across the country as of 2013 Over the decade studied Pew said Arizona pension systems fell from seventh-best-funded in the nation to 24th a shift the report blamed on ldquominimum funding standards that allowed debts to grow over timerdquo

But the findings are nothing to be worried about according to numerous officials connected with the systems

ldquoWhat is important is the plan going forwardrdquo said Dennis Hoffman an Arizona State University economics professor ldquoThe current funded status is far less important than the plan going forwardrdquo

The state has two major public pension systems The Public Safety Personnel Retirement System covers about 32000 emergency and public safety personnel and retirees

The Arizona State Retirement System covering more than 545000 people accounts for most other public employees ndash education county state and municipal workers ndash along with charter schools that may apply for coverage

The Pew report said Arizona had more than $15 billion in unfunded liabilities in 2013 dropping the statersquos funds from 99 percent funded in 2003 to 72 percent in 2013

The report gives the financial history for every statersquos retirement system but singles out four ndash Arizona Alabama Tennessee and West Virginia ndash because they posted significant changes during the decade-long reporting period

But Pewrsquos numbers may have overstated the shift for Arizona said Paul Matson the director of the Arizona State Retirement System Pewrsquos reports used what he called ldquosmoothedrdquo numbers which he said are not the best numbers for this type of data analysis While Pewrsquos numbers showed Arizonarsquos funding gap growing from 2003 to 2013 the ldquounsmoothedrdquo numbers ndash which Matson believes to be a better ldquoreflection of financial healthrdquo ndash show little change

An analysis using unsmoothed numbers shows the Arizona State system almost 76 percent funded in 2003 not the 99 percent cited by Pew dropping to just under 73 percent funded in 2013

The report did not look at 2014 but Matson said his analysis showed his system climbing to 815 percent in 2014

Hoffman ndash who is on Matsonrsquos board of directors but was careful to say he was speaking in his capacity as a professor ndash said that it is a ldquoproblem to some degree that yoursquore not today at 100 percentrdquo But he also believes people should be

focusing on and thinking about ldquowhat the plan is to do over the next 10 to 15 yearsrdquo

The report acknowledges that it is not forward-looking By stopping in 2013 it does not include 2014 investment returns that ldquopoint to a reduction in unfunded liabilities for the majority of statesrdquo and includes ldquolosses from the 2008 Great Recessionrdquo

Christian Palmer spokesman for the Public Safety Personnel Retirement System pointed to some of the reasons for the declines cited by the report

The burst of the tech bubble in the early 2000s had a negative impact on the investments many pension systems use to generate revenue Palmer said Those investments also took a hit during the recession in the latter part of that decade

Palmer also noted that the public safety system is required to pay out half of any annual return that exceeds 9 percent to retirees That increase remains for the life of that retireesrsquo pension ndash even in later under-performing years

Palmer said that requirement cuts into the systemrsquos ability to properly fund assets and pay off interest a problem that he said is ldquolikely going to have to be addressed if the funding level is ever to be correctrdquo

But there is ldquoreason to remain optimisticrdquo Palmer said because there is now ldquowidespread recognition among policymakers public safety employees and employers of the need for structural changesrdquo to the retirement systems

I-17 crash leaves two people dead one injured

PHOENIX ndash A horrific accident on Monday July 27 on the southbound I-17 near Dixileta took the lives of two people Another person was injured in the crash

Reports state that a van with three people inside hit a semi pulled over on the side of the freeway The two passengers in the van were killed According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety the van driver was taken to the hospital with serious injuries The semi driver was not injured

Long traffic delays were

caused by the crash which occurred at about 6 am on July 27 Throughout the morning commute only the far left lane of the I-17 was open in that

area By 2 pm that afternoon traffic lanes were reopened

The cause of the crash is not yet known

Everyone wants to see a knockout Unfortunately as professional boxing provided earlier this year with the much-maligned Floyd Mayweather JrManny Pacquiao match billed as the ldquofight of the centuryrdquo boxing can be a tedious experience Call the style measured technical or defensive but boxing is ultimately a battle of rounds twelve to be exact with most of the risks taken in the early and late rounds Antoine Fuqua director of ldquoTraining Dayrdquo steps into the ring with a story about a fallen champion boxer fighting for redemption Sound familiar Much of this film will feel the same which is the unfortunate problem with ldquoSouthpawrdquo

Billy Hope (Jake Gyllenhaal) is the reigning Junior Middleweight Boxing Champion Often bloody and infuriated in the ring Billy is a brawler a walking punching bag who has somehow attained an undefeated record Billy lives in his a lavish mansion with his wife Maureen (Rachel McAdams) and daughter Leila (Oona Laurence) accompanied by his childhood crew and promoting manager Jordan Mains (50 Cent) Maureen wants Billy to stop fighting but Billy doesnrsquot know much outside of the ring At a charity event the up-and-coming

contender challenges Billy which leads to an altercation with tragic consequences Billy loses everything including his daughter the only way to redeem his life and heal himself is to return to the ring

Antoine Fuqua is a capable director adding a style and flair to scenes that make the viewer feel like punches are being thrown right at them while also building tension and anticipation during the more action packed scenes Unfortunately it seems like Fuqua only knows two speeds here swift and sluggish

Or perhaps more relevant two punches the haymaker and the jab The film is constantly going for knockout blow Emotionally the film is many times wrung dry though there are a few moments that resonate effectively specifically scenes between Billy and his wife When the film isnrsquot power punching itrsquos moving at a lethargic pace which becomes monotonous because the main character is difficult to invest any compassion in Billy Hope feels like the bully in school who pushed and punched hard enough to make people let him do whatever he wanted This character design makes it difficult to root for Billyrsquos return Will he have learned the error of his ways and change Itrsquos difficult to say

ldquoSouthpawrdquo treads on every ldquoRockyrdquo motif from the training segments to the unsavory promoters the forced emotional punches and the wise and weary trainer though Forest Whitaker is quite good

in the role What saves the film from an early technical knockout is the performance from Jake Gyllenhaal who transforms physically into boxing shape while emotionally being guarded one moment and unrestrained with anger in other moments This performance works for much of the time itrsquos only when the narrative heavy-handedly forces dramatic scenarios into the film when things begin to stumble

ldquoSouthpawrdquo functions like a boxing match a few narrative

punches land while some donrsquot

At times the film is paced to

make it twelve rounds while

other times itrsquos poised to punch

itself tired Gyllenhaal puts on

an impressive show assisted

by Forest Whitaker but the

performances canrsquot hold up

the tiresome and formulaic

narrative which unfortunately

results in ldquoSouthpawrdquo despite

some of the heart it displays

being trapped in the corner

waiting for the final bell to ring

ADEQ issues fish consumption advisory for Bartlett Lake

NORTH VALLEY ndash The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality in association with the Arizona Game and Fish Department has issued a fish consumption advisory recommending that people limit consumption of channel catfish and largemouth bass caught from Bartlett Lake in Maricopa County ADEQ is issuing this advisory because recent fish tissue samples from Bartlett Lake contained elevated levels of mercury

ADEQ recommends that adults limit consumption of channel catfish and largemouth bass to 24 ounces (uncooked weight) per week and children 12 years of age and under limit consumption to two ounces per month (uncooked weight)

This advisory does not limit the use of this waterbody for fishing bird watching swimming or other recreational uses In general the level of contaminants in fish is several folds higher than levels found in water

Any health risks associated

with eating fish from this advisory area are based on long term consumption and are not representative of risk from eating fish occasionally

According to the ADEQ Fish Consumption Advisory Fact Sheet ADEQ is currently

working on this issue through ldquodata collection analysis and research to determine mercury sources in Arizona and develop feasible mitigation and remediation measuresrdquo

NORTH VALLEY ndash Winners of the 10th annual ldquoArizona Big Game Super Rafflerdquo were announced July 23 during a Sportsmenrsquos Open Forum at Arizona Game and Fish Department headquarters

The prizes included a total of 10 Special Big Game Tags one for each of the statersquos big game species ndash bighorn sheep elk mule deer white-tailed deer pronghorn antelope buffalo turkey bear javelina and mountain lion The permit-tags were awarded by the Arizona Game and Fish Commission Raffle tickets ranged from $5 to $25 depending on the species A New Mexico elk hunt and Swarovski optics package also were raffled

Businesses hope I-10 closure is road-funding lsquowakeup callrsquo to Congress


NORTH VALLEY ndash Arizona Trucking Association President Tony Bradley says one good thing may have come out of the closure of a section of Interstate 10 this past week ndash it could point up the need to fix the nationrsquos infrastructure

The July 19 collapse of the eastbound span of the Tex Wash Bridge on I-10 comes as Congress debates the transportation trust fund the $40 billion fund that builds and maintains the nationrsquos roads rails ports and other transportation projects

Legislation authorizing the current fund is set to expire in a week ndash the day before lawmakers are scheduled to leave town for their August recess

The House last week passed a short-term extension of the fund for another five months that adds $86 billion but the Senate is deadlocked on its proposal for multiyear renewal

For Arizona federal funds provide more than 70 percent of the state Department of Transportationrsquos current construction budget said department spokeswoman Laura Douglas

According to the US Department of Transportation half of all roads in Arizona are

in poor or mediocre condition ndash and 954 of the statersquos 7862 bridges are rated ldquostructurally deficientrdquo or ldquofunctionally obsoleterdquo

The department does not have specifics on which projects might be delayed or affected should the trust fund run dry but it is ldquodeveloping strategies to deal with the potential funding impactsrdquo Douglas said in a statement

She said the Arizona transportation department ldquostrongly supports a more sustainable and long-term fix for transportation fundingrdquo

Bradley agreed adding that Congress should change the way the transportation fund gets money moving toward a more ldquouser-feerdquo based structure

By one estimate from the American Road and Transportation Builders Association Arizona would need as much as $195 billion to fix just the bridges in need of repair in the state

In a statement from the trucking association earlier this week shortly after the collapse of the Tex Wash Bridge Bradley said ignoring infrastructure problems in Arizona could be deadly

ldquoArizona driversrsquo lives are at stake as they cross a structurally deficient bridge an astonishing

16 million times a dayrdquo he said in the statement

In a phone interview Friday he said there are economic concerns as well

Bradley said I-10 is a ldquovital economic link we have with our surrounding statesrdquo that has a direct effect on businesses in Arizona He said products made in Arizona have to go through Los Angeles ports to get to international buyers

ldquoWe canrsquot get our products that are built here in the state to market overseas hellip without a significant cost increaserdquo if there is not a modern efficient highway system in place he said

That ldquosignificant cost increaserdquo was seen in the detours drivers had to take to get around the closed stretch of I-10 which added more than 100 miles and many hours to the drive between Phoenix and Los Angeles

Those delays will continue to be felt as I-10 will be limited to one bridge span carrying traffic in both directions over the Tex Wash for the foreseeable future

ldquoIf we have another failure like this it could end up crippling our economy because wersquore not able to get our products to marketrdquo Bradley said

Diamond Dance Works is more than just another dance studio When Danielle and Nick were developing the concept they wanted to be more than just a place to learn how to dance They wanted to set a standard create a specific culture and strive to be the best at everything they did Danielle was able to be involved in every aspect of the design layout and detail that went into the studio In doing this she was able to create the studiorsquos Diamond Standards Diamond Dance Works strives to have the best facility the best instructors and

Daniellersquos passion may be for dance but her heart is for the studentsrsquo learning Danielle is able to bring more than just dance into the classroom If you were to ask her high school students who she taught for the last five years they would tell you that there are continuous life lessons learned Danielle has a way of empowering her students to succeed allowing them to learn from their mistakes and building them up regardless of natural ability

PHOENIX ndash Starlight Community Theater has received five National Youth Arts Awards and 15 additional nominations for their 2014-2015 season productions

National Youth Arts Awards honor outstanding work by youth in the arts This year more than 400 productions were considered for the awards including shows from more than 160 different members in more than 70 cities spanning 13 states In addition to the youth who performed in schools and youth theatre companies anyone age 18 and under who performed at a show reviewed by a National Youth Arts judge was also considered for the awards as well as the adults who participated in the youth productions backstage and a limited number of guest adult performers in productions designed for youth
